James or Seamus?

James is a meaningful family name on Mom's side. Most men on Dad's side have Irish names/spellings, Dad included. Both go equally well with (Irish) surname. Child has about an equal chance of being raised in Ireland or the U.S.

Your thoughts?

Sorry, by "Mom" and "Dad" I mean me and DH, not my own Mom and Dad. Thanks for any feedback.

I prefer James.

LibraMoon · 21/03/2011 11:11

Seamus is much better, more unusual but still classic. James is a bit bland and boring imo.

mayanna123 · 21/03/2011 11:13

Seamus is lovely and much more interesting than James, which is indeed a little dull.

BarbieLovesKen · 21/03/2011 12:18

I love James. I absolutely hate the name Seamus - its horrible but then Im Irish, living in Irish and this is really just a boring, 'auld lad name here.

weegiemum · 21/03/2011 12:20

I much prefer Seamus.

My ds's best friend has this name, and is so talked about in this house that he is known as "the famous seamus" but don't let that put you off.

James is just so ....meh to me.

ThisFeelsWeird · 21/03/2011 12:21

Love James. Hate Seamus.

pilates · 21/03/2011 12:22

Love James, do not like Seamus.

CharlieBoo · 21/03/2011 12:23

James I think, its lovely, although I do like Seamus too, but I think you need to have strong irish connections to carry it off.

rachel234 · 21/03/2011 12:38

I much prefer Seamus, with or without Irish connections.
James is a little dull in comparison. I also see James as the plural of Jame Smile.

muminthecity · 21/03/2011 12:41

I adore Seamus, one of my favourite names ever. James is ok, but a bit dull.

mopsyflopsy · 21/03/2011 12:43

Seamus is much nicer and less overused than James imo. Especially with the Irish connection.

LetThereBeRock · 21/03/2011 13:00

James.I hate Seamus.

cloudydays · 21/03/2011 17:54

Hmmm, six for James, six for Seamus :)

Thanks for the replies!

I vote James if that helps!

Ragwort · 21/03/2011 20:17

James - lovely name, and I think it is quite unusual these days (can't think of any at my DS's school).

Seamus is best for me so long as you have Irish heritage. It is my DS's middle name.

Thanks all! I'm not even actually pregnant, ttc#2 but this dilemma came up when expecting dd (in case she was ds!) so just wondering what opinions are out there while I have babies on the brain.

korma do you always call him seamus or does he ever go by shay or another nn?
