Sylvie

I have always liked this name because of a lovely girl at school.
Honest opinions needed though!

I really dislike names that I consider cutesy or little girly, slightly concerned this name could fit in that category. Do you think it sounds "grown up"?

Will she spend her entire life correcting people who call her Sylvia (which btw is a name I don't like)?

Do you think this name might be seen as a bit "trendy"? Really want to avoid this!

Thanks!

Quite like it, don't think it will date or become too popular but these things are very hard to predict.

If you love it then use it Smile

RottenRow · 17/03/2011 17:35

I love it but DP won't allow us to use it.

SilkStalkings · 17/03/2011 18:59

Love it, it's not a nickname, it's the French spelling, like Amelie and there are plenty of those.

rubybambini · 17/03/2011 19:15

It's pretty. It makes me think of something fairy and sylph-like.

Liabella · 17/03/2011 19:21

This is top of my list. I love it. DH wants Sylvia though so we may have to negotiate!!

weimy · 17/03/2011 19:23

none needed you are the one giving birth!

PepsiPopcorn · 17/03/2011 19:32

I think it's rather "trendy", sorry.

BetamaxBandit · 17/03/2011 20:08

Love it!

TabithaTwitchet · 17/03/2011 20:10

Aargh Pepsi you are confirming my fears - why do you think it is trendy?

I love it , really love .
DH wouldn't let me use it for either of our DDs ( and I argued really hard for it) because he once knew a sausage dog named Sylvie :( Hmm

You have to use it .
It is a lovely elegant , timeless name .

Yes , you will probably have to put up with correcting people who think it's Sylvia but you 'd get that whatever you called her .
Ann will get called Anna , Sarah will get called Sara , and so on .

Go for it !

kando · 17/03/2011 20:16

Tis a beautiful name. My mil is Sylvia so dd1's middle name is the same. But mil has turned in to a nutter-from-hell type woman so glad it's only a middle name and dd1's not likely to want to use it [phew] Sylvie is just lovely tho Smile

PepsiPopcorn · 17/03/2011 20:22

Sorry :( I think it's because I've only heard of children with the name recently.

However if you like it, use it :) We're just random strangers on the internet, after all!

This was one of my choices about 14 years ago so not sure whether it's "trendy" - or I was just uber avant-garde Wink

Knowing teenage girls though, I think it'd get shortened to Sylv or Syl

KingofHighVis · 17/03/2011 21:18

Love it. We had a cat called Sylvie and it reminds me of the St Etienne song.

Both good things.

SilkStalkings · 17/03/2011 21:24

Sly for a nn?

LetThereBeRock · 17/03/2011 23:12

It's beautiful, and not at all trendy imho.

madamefreckle · 17/03/2011 23:19

If you've always loved it and it's got positive connotations for you...use it!! I don't know of any others and I wouldn't say it's particularly 'trendy'. I like the frenchness of it, but it is still English enough that people won't be asking if she's half French all the time. Doesn't it mean something like 'of the woods' ...Think it's lovely, romantic without being too cute.

Edmundo · 17/03/2011 23:56

I think of it as on-trend too. I know of quite a lot of little Sylvias/Sylvies. Offspring of trendy N.London types. Not necessarily a bad thing though.

NadiaWadia · 18/03/2011 01:46

It's very pretty, but apparently in France it's considered a middle-aged name, not in fashion. Still I suppose that doesn't really matter.

Lollypolly · 18/03/2011 01:53

Yes, love it but it's the French equivalent of Linda or Brenda

shangrila · 18/03/2011 04:22

Beautiful name. Love it and not over-trendy at all here - but I am in darkest Wales.

Does remind me of Sylvie Vartan, ageing French rock chick, though. Which is probably where all those French middle aged references come in. For them, it might be the equivalent of calling a boy Cliff.

Regardless, it's a wonderful name.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 18/03/2011 05:35

I know a five year old Sylvie, so I think it's on-trend but it's not too trendy - and starts from a low base of popularity so even if it spikes, it won't ever be too popular, iyswim.

Bathsheba · 18/03/2011 07:37

We have one at playgroup...she is gorgeous so I love it...!!!!!!!!!

Hedwig3 · 18/03/2011 09:01

Fabulous, and if you love it enough the other stuff won't matter too much!
