Sylvie

I have always liked this name because of a lovely girl at school.
Honest opinions needed though!

I really dislike names that I consider cutesy or little girly, slightly concerned this name could fit in that category. Do you think it sounds "grown up"?

Will she spend her entire life correcting people who call her Sylvia (which btw is a name I don't like)?

Do you think this name might be seen as a bit "trendy"? Really want to avoid this!

Thanks!

I am feeling all enthusiastic about this name now :)
I knew it was a bit of a seventies name in France but that doesn't bother me. I haven't heard the song, but Dh probably has, will ask him.

I have a 3 year old Sylvie so am quite biased! People seem to like it, and don't tend to say Sylvia, although sometimes I have to repeat it. I think it is becoming more popular, but its a lovely pretty name. And it means from the woods or forest, which is nice, if you like the woods! Use it use it!

MercyMe · 18/03/2011 15:56

I love Sylvie, it is lovely. If I have another dd, she will be Sylvie. Go for it!

NettoSuperstar · 18/03/2011 15:59

I find it too cutesy and little girly.

OFGS · 18/03/2011 17:54

Love it.

squeak2392 · 19/03/2011 20:04

I think it's beautiful.
I don't know of any, but I've heard of others considering it.

KangarooCaught · 19/03/2011 20:10

It was on my long list 5 years back. Think it would suit an elfin dd rather than a jolly hockey sticks type which sturdy calves Grin

TabithaTwitchet · 19/03/2011 22:14

Grin Take your point about the jolly hockey sticks. Well if the rest of her family are anything to go by, she will be utterly hopeless at any sporting endeavour!
I do think Sylvie would really suit Dd1, o course Dd2 may be totally different in build and temperament and not suit it at all...

Love it, DS2 would have been called Sylvie!

CristinaTheAstonishing · 20/03/2011 00:42

I have a 6 y.o. Sylvia. Today she announced she wanted to be called SILvi, with the emphasis on the first I. It's a beautiful name, go for it.

LadyWellian · 20/03/2011 00:53

Makes me think of the gorgeous dancer Sylvie Guillem, which is a good thing (though second what Tabitha said about jolly hockey sticks and big calves).

Vivie (pronounced VV) for a nickname? (Reminds me of a favourite play by George Bernard Shaw.)

I haven't heard of any small ones but as DD is older I don't know a lot of people with very young children.

Cristina is your DD usually Syl-VEE-a then? In English the emphasis would always be on the first 'i', and I thought the same was true of the French Sylvie.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 20/03/2011 01:05

LadyW, no she's SILvia but we also call her SilVEE for short. She wants the emphasis on the first I for the short version too.

Nice name

TempsPerdu · 07/06/2019 22:31

It’s fine but personally I’d go straight to Sylvia, which feels more substantial and sophisticated to me (and probably due a comeback soon). Sylvie feels similar in style to currently trendy names like Amelie and Elodie and could get more popular off the back of these.

bridgetreilly · 07/06/2019 22:33

To me it sounds pretentious and unfinished. I much prefer Sylvia.

TempsPerdu · 07/06/2019 22:35

Ah, just saw that you don’t actually like Sylvia - I’m that case yes, they may be confused. The DM of an old friend of mine is called Sylvie and she constantly gets called Sylvia instead.

Sophronia · 07/06/2019 22:41

I know one who spells it Silvie. It’s a nice name.

Astronica · 07/06/2019 22:55

I think it's quite lovely.

Penny4Thoughts · 07/06/2019 22:58

I love Sylvie but I also like Sylvia- elegant sounding

SassyBadger · 07/06/2019 23:39

Why do people re-open nearly decade old threads just to say 'nice name'? Confused

Penny4Thoughts · 08/06/2019 07:53

@SassyBadger and why do I always fall for them?!

Whatareyoutalkingabout · 08/06/2019 08:30

It's definitely getting more popular but I don't think in a Lily way. I doubt it will get into the top 20 but she won't be the only one she ever meets sort of thing. It was on my list until 2 girls I know had babies called Sylvie. It's like vintage but not too popular yet, which is actually working against it and getting it more popularity (everyone seems to be looking for not-too-popular names which seems to make them suddenly become popular, if you see what I mean!) It's definitely 'trendy'. I'd put it in the slightly vintage-hipster category alongside names like Beatrix, Hazel, Winnie, Olive, June, etc. The names that lots of cool bearded men and tattooed women are using! Which is better than it being like a Lily name which just absolutely everyone is using!

Whatareyoutalkingabout · 08/06/2019 08:31

Oops! Just realised this is a zombie thread - little Sylvie is about 8 years old now Grin

Penny4Thoughts · 08/06/2019 08:33

@Whatareyoutalkingabout these zombie posts are hilarious- wonder if the baby was a Sylvie in the end !
