Male name associations...

rubybambini · 17/03/2011 16:27

First baby, don't know the sex. We've picked a girl's name or two, but completely stuck on a boy's name (so it must be one!) - due in three weeks...

Curious to what associations you make with these names that we currently like, rather than if you like or dislike - what do you think?

Barnaby
Barney
Edward (although we'd call him Ned)
Frederick
Henry
Joby
Kit
Theo

Middle name John after both our fathers.

Thank you!

I like Edward John, Frederick John, Theodore John or Henry John.

Barnaby - OK
Barney - bear
Edward - like, classic
Frederick - like, classic
Henry - like, classic
Joby - don't like, wouldn't flow with John
Kit - don't like
Theo - nice as nickname for Theodore

CPtart · 17/03/2011 16:53

Barnaby = bear
Barney = rubble
Edward = love it. Hate Ned, sounds like an old nag.
Frederick = Bit old mannish
Henry = ok
Joby = Trying too hard.
Kit = the car from night rider, or a girls name!!
Theo = like it, but quite a few of them nowadays.

Can't go wrong with John though !!

rubybambini · 17/03/2011 18:14

Interesting so far - thank you.

We hadn't thought of the bear association!

Joby's my uncle's name (now in his 70s); I've always liked it.

Barney - have a good friend called Barney - it is rather a cute cuddly name, but that's fine if it's what you're after!

I like Joby and Kit, but not sure I'd want my son known as Job, which is what it's bound to get shortened to, no? Henry OK, Edward OK, Theo I like.

flipfloppop · 17/03/2011 18:31

Barnaby - bear
Barney - big purple dinosaur
Edward (although we'd call him Ned) - edward nice/Ned - horsey
Frederick - Love love love it!
Henry - ditto
Joby - jobby (sorry it's just what I see when I see the name)
Kit - like. I knew a male kit.
Theo - like

freerangeeggs · 17/03/2011 18:42

JOBY!!! LOLZ

It's like Jobby

All the others are lovely though

Carrotsandcelery · 17/03/2011 18:48

Barnaby - bear (it is a kids tv programme)

Barney - also a tv programme - this time a dinosaur

Edward (although we'd call him Ned) - 's Atomic Dustbins

Frederick - Fred, Freddie - lovely

Henry - the 8th or Henry Hoover

Joby - where I live that is close to a word for a poo

Kit - really like this

Theo - also really like this

I hope I haven't offended anyone - I just did the associations as requested hopefully.

rubybambini · 17/03/2011 18:57

Ha ha ha - love it. I'll have to discreetly ask my uncle Joby how many times he's been compared to a poo in his 70 years.

I don't know much about the history of it, other than it's reasonably religious, from the Book of Job.

Henry Hoover? Hadn't thought of that one either =)

Joby Talbot from Divine Comedy's Casanova album.

rubybambini · 17/03/2011 19:00

Ah, a quick pester of Google tells me that the etymology of Joby = persecuted. Hmmmmmm.

Carrotsandcelery · 17/03/2011 19:01

Your poor uncle! It is maybe regional though as I am Scottish. Grin

thinkingkindly · 17/03/2011 19:05

Barnaby - bear
Barney - bear
Edward (although we'd call him Ned) - I love Ned (DH says 'donkey')
Frederick - posh, bit German; Freddy = now chavvy; Fred = quite cool
Henry - pompous
Joby - not a name; Harry Potter's Dobby
Kit - cool
Theo - wet

rubybambini · 17/03/2011 19:11

@carrotsandcelery - he's English and now living in the IoM. It seems so normal to me as I've grown up with it, but I'm thoroughly enjoying the reaction to it.

I don't ususally click on name threads, but the comments about Joby made me ROFL

Does anyone remember the TV prog with the song that started,
"Barnaby the bear's my name
Never call me Jack or Jane..."!

Kit is the only cool one.

lilyberry · 17/03/2011 19:20

I was at school with a Joby, and he never got these comments. Hmm I always thought it was a great name.

meditrina · 17/03/2011 21:24

Barnaby - Midsomer Murders
Barney - Dinosaur or Rubble
Edward - the Confessor (Ned - no strong association)
Frederick - none in full, but Freddie = Mercury or Flintoff
Henry - VIII (or other kings)
Joby - no association - never heard it
Kit - the car, or the Masquerade man
Theo - no string associations

Edmundo · 18/03/2011 22:31

Barnaby - ok, bit flouncy
Barney - prefer Barnaby
Edward (although we'd call him Ned) - Lovely although seems to be rising in popularity
Frederick - Great
Henry - Ok
Joby - NO
Kit - Nice as a nn
Theo - dislike this sounds lispy and is weak sounding

BelligerentGhoul · 18/03/2011 22:38

Barnaby - love this: he would have lots of brown curls and grow up to play the guitar and break girls' hearts just for being beautiful and a little distant in a dreamy sort of way

Barney - no: Barney sounds fat and purple and stupid but Barnaby rocks

Edward (although we'd call him Ned) - Edward is one of the best names ever and I like teddy but not Ned: Ned is a lonely donkey and very sad :(

Frederick - yes yes but please no Freddie. Frederick is tall and plays rugby and always walks you right to the door but doesn't insist on coming in.

Henry - don't like this name: Henry is blonde with big teeth and too much aftershave

Joby - nope I don't like this: sounds like a little boy with dirty knees

Kit - great as a nn for Christopher. he will be artistic but also good at sport - probably a bit of all-rounder actually

Theo

  • nice name: he will have glasses and a floppy fringe and be rather away with the fairies but cute with it.

:)

muminthemiddle · 19/03/2011 09:08

I only really like the name Edward from your list.

Bucharest · 19/03/2011 09:18

Barnaby bear, cuddly, (fat?)
Barney-ditto,cartoony character
Edward (although we'd call him Ned)Twilight.
Frederick- fat sausagey fingers and a beige mac (you did ask, sorry)
Henry- trying to be posh and failing.
Joby-children's book I read in primary school. Bit Waterloo Roady
Kit-Boden male model catalogue man
Theo - his Mum enters him in local baby competitions.Probably got a brother (older) called Joshua and a sister called EllieHyphenSomethingElse

I quite like Ned (without the Edward bit though)

Bettyspencer · 19/03/2011 09:26

Barney - the dinosaur
Henry - upper class
Ned- elderly man or donkey
Kit - upper class
Theo and Edward - just nice middle-of-the-road boys' names. No strong associations

TheEffinOasis · 19/03/2011 09:36

Ooh, I like this, may do it for my list (if you don't mind me stealing your idea...)

These names make me think:

Barnaby - childrens TV character/presenter or in adult chubby, ruddy cheeked, public school rugger player (sorry!)

Barney - ditto above really - slightly clueless, not to be taken seriously

Edward (although we'd call him Ned) - sturdy, solid, reliable - applies to Ned too - in fact all derivations other than 'Teddy' which I cannot stand.

Frederick - old man's name, 'Freddy' as with 'Teddy' seems like a bit of a joke name

Henry - mixed feelings but I tend to think posh, public school or a bit of a naughty boy

Joby - made up? Destined for a career in the media?

Kit - Pretty solid, masculine - but what's it short for?

Theo - Effeminate

FoofffyShmoofffer · 19/03/2011 09:44

Barnaby - cuddly bear
Barney - My mums yorkshire Terrier
Edward (although we'd call him Ned)- love this.
Frederick -old man
Henry - Also like this.
Joby - a mickey take waiting to happen (sorry)
Kit - I like this
Theo - Like this too.

However, if the middle name is definitely John then the only ones it sounds right with are
Barnaby
Edward
Frederick
Henry
Theo

ivykaty44 · 19/03/2011 09:46

I like Fred

squeak2392 · 19/03/2011 15:00

Barnaby - Makes me think of a surname, but just because it IS technically a surname and I know a Barnard. I'd actually use this name myself though, so don't let that worry you Smile.
Barney - Nn for Barnaby or Bernard. Not personally, but I can see people thinking 'the dinosaur'.
Edward - No automatic associations, but Twilight springs to mind purely because I've read so many threads where this has been the case for other people. Ned makes me think of Numbah One (Kids Next Door), or alternatively, Flanders. Hate the name, but I suppose it's fine as a nn. Much prefer Eddie.
Frederick/Henry - No associations, just lovely names Smile.
Joby - Sounds like a nn. Automatically think Jacoby.
Kit - Auto: Kitty, so sounds v fem. Also, don't really understand why some people use this as a nn for Christopher. However, if you like it, I'd say use it but only as a nn. Also, would probs get 'Sports Kit' if he's sporty. Or if he's not, if you get my drift.
Theo - Again, no associations but would prefer as nn.
