Bridie

Bridie was my mothers name - she died when I was young. My daughter will is due around her anniversary.
I really don't like the name Bridie but would be open to having some derivation of it as my childs second name.
We are 90% decided that babys first name is Hannah.

Bridget - hate it
Brid - no
Bree - too desperate housewives
Bea - maybe, but bares little resemblance to Bridie!

Am I missing anything obvious?

beatrice?

sorry dunno really, i would have bridie for a middle name myself

meditrina · 15/03/2011 22:40

I love the nn Bridie - very Chalet School! It was short for Bridget in that - do you like Brigitte or Birgitta any better?

bananamom · 15/03/2011 22:40

I really like Bridie! Did she have a middle name you could use?

Amber76 · 15/03/2011 23:04

No middle name.
Think Brigitte and Birgitta are too "European" and don't fit with Hannah or the surname.
Also, the surname ends in an "ie" sound so Bridie doesn't sound great with it.

But keep the thoughts coming!!

The only others I can think of are Brid, Bride and Breagh, maybe Briony/Bryony?

Udderly · 15/03/2011 23:38

Briga?

TheOldestCat · 15/03/2011 23:41

My FIL calls my MIL this (she is a Brigid).

Seconding meditrina - what about Briony?

Underachieving · 16/03/2011 04:27

Going the other way with the shortening, what about Dee?

Did your mother have a middle name?

mathanxiety · 16/03/2011 04:46

Hannah Brigitte would be nice imo.

There's Britt/ Britta...

shmoz · 16/03/2011 04:48

Brighide? I think thats where Bridie comes from

Bettyspencer · 16/03/2011 09:07

I think Hannah Bridie would be lovely. Bridie is really pretty IMO.

PepsiPopcorn · 16/03/2011 09:11

Bedelia is related apparently... with Delia as variant.

Or how about using your Mum's middle name?

Ooopsadaisy · 16/03/2011 09:13

I like Hannah Bridie.

abeautifulbutterfly · 16/03/2011 09:15

Hannah Bridie is lovely Smile. But then I like Bridget too (but banned by everyone else in the vicinity - and not pg in any cse Grin

melikalikimaka · 16/03/2011 09:16

I have a friend Bridie, she is lovely, but ditzy! Great as a name, but not Bridget please!

Go ahead, in honour of your dear Mum. I would do it.Wink

DesertOrchid · 16/03/2011 09:18

Why not just Hannah Bridie as others have said? I think it's lovely, and meaningful.

Fredfred · 16/03/2011 10:33

If it is the 'ie' on Brydie that is the problem, why not Bryda? (My grandmothers name!)

fallingandlaughing · 16/03/2011 11:28

I would just go for Hannah Bridie.

Breada is another alternative.

applejelly · 16/03/2011 11:29

What about your mum's maiden name? We have used a family surname for DS' middle name and it works really well.

quasimodo123 · 16/03/2011 13:15

Bridie meaning and name origin
Bridie \b-ri-

die\ as a girl's name is a variant of Bride (Irish, Gaelic) and Bridget (Gaelic), and the meaning of Bridie is "exalted one".

The baby name Bridie sounds like Bradie, Brydie, Bridi, Bridee and Brodie. Other similar baby names are Birdie, Biddie, Byrdie, Bradi, Bradee, Brandie, Brid, Brighe, Brendie, Brenie, Brie, Briane, Britte, Brijit, Brigit, Brigid, Bridy, Bridgit, Bridgid, Bridey, Brione, Brisia, Brittie, Bridney, Bridnee, Brucie, Fredie, Trudie, Prudie and Berdie.

quasimodo123 · 16/03/2011 13:16

sorry meant to say do you like any of these alternatives?

Grandhighpoohba · 16/03/2011 14:58

If your DD is ever likely to spend time in Scotland, please don't use Bridie. A bridie up here is a flat meat pie, a bit like a large cornish pastie but filled with mince.

Was your mum's maiden name something that could be turned into a middle name?

BuntyPenfold · 16/03/2011 17:11

I am a Bridget, a name more or less universally disliked in all it's variants, especially by me.
It was my granny's name and she disliked it too, and was never called it.
Why pass on a name you admit you don't like?

Is there another way to remember and honour your mother? Did she like a particular place you could use as a name, (such as Shannon, or Clare iyswim )
Or did she love flowers (Flora) or music (Allegra).

Amber76 · 16/03/2011 17:16

Thanks so much for all the suggestions.

She didn't have a middle name. But maiden name was O'Donovan - not sure anything could be done with this!!

I'm not going to call her Hannanh Bridie for two main reasons - I don't like the name Bridie and the surname ends in an "ie" sound so the full name would have an odd ring to it.

Nothing really soundsgood to me except perhaps "Brie" which is a type of cheese and I don't think that would work!
And maybe Dee...

Call her Robin (birdie) :)
