Narcissa

I've only recently discovered this name and I think it's absolutely beautiful. But with the blatant narcissism meaning, is it useable? I also understand there is a Harry Potter character called this (not read it myself) so should that put me off? To me it just speaks of wild daffodils, which I think is lovely, but if you met a little Narcissa would you think it was pretty or would you think jeez, what were the parents thinking?

I'm sorry, I usually try to be positive on these threads, but I think you have yourself given two excellent reasons for not using this name.

Something similar, maybe? Nerissa?

wearymum200 · 15/03/2011 22:34

Definitely a no, sorry.
Plenty of other flower names to choose from, if that's the way you want to go, or as above, -ssa names

Oh no. That would be a very hard name to live with. Nobody would like to be considered narcissistic.

OrangeBernard · 15/03/2011 22:37

Really really bad.

Underachieving · 16/03/2011 02:53

I agree with the others, I don't think you can get away with it.

How about: Clarissa, Nerissa, Alyssa, or Cicely?

i know a Daffodil. serious. any good?

limpingbint · 16/03/2011 06:23

awful

gorionine · 16/03/2011 06:36

I absolutely love the flower so to me the name speaks of someone beautiful but I find it a bit heavy sounding for a little girl.

IMHO it doe not matter one bit if the name has been used as a book character, there are 3 Harry in DD4's nursery and until thismorning reading your thread I honestly not once thought about Harry Potter.

Pancakeflipper · 16/03/2011 07:07

If I met a Narcissa I'd not think pretty. It's an elegant sounding name but with a twist to the side of evil. But you could shorten it to Narky.

Lovecat · 16/03/2011 07:14

I'd think 'God, your parents must've hated you' if I met a Narcissa - when I first came across it in HP I thought ooh, how clever, what a good name for a baddie, not anything about the flower!

To me, it's not that it's been a character in a book per se, more that it was a nasty character who was vain and wicked - not associations I'd want for my child.

Rhubarbgarden · 16/03/2011 08:50

Bugger.

No, sorry.

PepsiPopcorn · 16/03/2011 09:00

It's a pretty name but I'd avoid it because of the narcissism connection.

scottishmummy · 16/03/2011 09:01

geta pet,itsa dogs name.best shouted in a park.woof

Emelene · 16/03/2011 19:35

Ooh I can't get past all the negative associations I have with it.
Firstly I think it sounds like narcissist. :S
Also Narcissa Malfoy was a weak and evil character ... I don't know whether HP references would matter to you but...

Also, what could you do for nicknames? Sissy? That's not great either.

This is just my opinion of course, but if you love it you could always use it as a middle name?

Firawla · 16/03/2011 20:24

there is a name Nargis which refers to the same flower (i think? well its a flower name so i presume so) if you're interested, although I don't think its got that pretty of a sound myself, have known a couple of people with this name though.

I think Nerissa works well with the similar sound and is a nice name, has a nicer imagery - makes me think of the sea, i think meaning is something to do with that, so much more positive than harry potter character and narcissistic

Onion1968 · 16/03/2011 20:43

awful. truly awful.

Prunnhilda · 16/03/2011 20:47

Has it EVER been used as a woman's name, other than in Harry Potter?

(Harry, on the other hand, has quite a history!)

Jonquil is an established woman's name which means narcissus, if it's the flower you like. Smile

DilysPrice · 16/03/2011 20:48

I think "jeez, what were they thinking?" sums it up in a nutshell really.

spidookly · 16/03/2011 20:48

No

I thought this thread was a joke when I clicked on it.

You might as well call your child Lundy.

PepsiPopcorn · 16/03/2011 20:59

Trying to think of names that sounds similar... how about Marissa, Larissa, Clarissa, Christina, Anastasia, Nereida, Alyssa, Tessa?

PepsiPopcorn · 16/03/2011 21:02

Nymbler thinks you might like Cassia, Cassandra, Iona, Lydia, Alexandra, Isadora and Delilah.
