Do you like the name Evan? My friend started telling me that it was so welsh and why would I pick a welsh name when I am not welsh... Blah blah. Any thoughts??? We were also thinking of James as a first name.

I don't find Evan girly at all. Quite the opposite.

Nightstar · 10/03/2011 20:58

Awful!

mathanxiety · 10/03/2011 22:01

I think it's the V that signifies girly to me. It sounds too close to Vivienne, Evie, Evelyn...

MerryMarigold · 10/03/2011 22:03

I have a friend with an Evan. I like it. It was also my grandfather's name. He was not welsh! I also have a friend with an Idris who is not Welsh either. I do like that name a lot too.

cowboylover · 10/03/2011 22:48

I think Evan is a really nice name and the Welsh spelling is Evon so different anyway.

If you like it use it and I think it goes really well with James

Onion1968 · 10/03/2011 23:11

Evan is lovely. I prefer Evan James to James Evan.

edam · 10/03/2011 23:32

cowboy - are you sure about that? Welsh spelling is Ifan AFAIK, never heard of Evon. (I'm half-Welsh and have Welsh relatives called Evan.)

RedbinD · 10/03/2011 23:41

Evan Stevan would be nice.

Rannaldini · 10/03/2011 23:43

immediately think of fat emporium

kat2504 · 11/03/2011 00:49

I like it too. One of my cousins has an Evan. I think it's a nice name. Traditional sounding but a bit more unusual.

lolcat · 11/03/2011 01:21

Love it, love it, love it. We have an Evan David, and we are not in the least bit welsh Grin.

I lobbied for Euan at the time but DH overruled me on that one, and I am very glad as I much prefer the name Evan now.

mathanxiety · 11/03/2011 17:44

Evan Steven is too like Even Steven

LisMcA · 11/03/2011 17:47

I like Evan, but would be a bit too much with DH's Kevin! I thought it was Scottish rather than Welsh, although Evans is a Welsh surname.

LiquoriceLila · 11/03/2011 20:14

my friend has an Evan though I have to admit I think its a bit of a wishy washy name

MrClaypole · 11/03/2011 20:57

I have an Evan James and still love his name!

Have never met another Evan so it's not too popular.

cowboylover · 11/03/2011 21:11

100% Sure - My very welsh speaking friends have just named there son Evon as it is the most traditional form of the name. When I first read it I thought it was a typo on the text her DH sent out but I double checked!

But you are correct Evan is derived from Iefan

triskaidekaphile · 11/03/2011 21:12

I like it.

agora1 · 11/03/2011 21:15

Love it - great name.

edam · 11/03/2011 21:24

Well, that's a new one on me. I know Evan is Anglicised but it still retains the 'a' of Ifan/Iefan, seems odd to introduce an 'o'. Maybe it's one of the very many examples of the North/South Welsh divide?

cowboylover · 11/03/2011 21:31

Oh yes! We have a small language and still manage to get it regional Smile

OP Has it helped you decide?
Its so hard to chose a name x

theresapotatoundermysink · 11/03/2011 21:35

How are you pronouncing it?

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 11/03/2011 21:55

To the majority of people it's Ev - an, welsh speakers pronounce it more like air - van.

edam · 11/03/2011 23:56

or ee-van (Ifan)...
