Do you like the name Evan? My friend started telling me that it was so welsh and why would I pick a welsh name when I am not welsh... Blah blah. Any thoughts??? We were also thinking of James as a first name.

We are thinking about it for this baby if it is a boy-I really like it and anyone I have ever said it to always gives a positive response.
We are Scottish not Welsh though.

McDreamy · 09/03/2011 22:01

My friend has a DS called Evan, they are Scottish! I like it.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 09/03/2011 22:04

Lovely name (I'm not biased at all Wink )

Strong, clear, easy to see and say.

Go for it!

Athrawes · 09/03/2011 22:06

Love it, wish we had called DS it rather than Ieuan which is just confusing a lot of people.
Love it and jealous.

jimswifein1964 · 09/03/2011 22:07

I really like it.

jellybeans · 09/03/2011 22:10

I like it but it is becoming very popular.

cece · 09/03/2011 22:11

Prefer James tbh.

Evan not really my cup of tea.

expectingno3 · 09/03/2011 22:14

Evan James is a great name!

pointydog · 09/03/2011 22:32

I like the sound of Evan. Quite a lot. And it makes me think of Evan dando

Underachieving · 09/03/2011 22:33

I don't especially think of it as Welsh. Wales is part of Britain and you are British I presume so it's not like you've gone for Ra the Egyptian sun god or anything.

Evan is alright. Not my thing but nothing wrong with it.

Really like it, a bit more interesting than James tbh

ohnororo · 09/03/2011 22:59

I love it, it's my cousin's name or I'd have considered it for my little boy. I think it's masculine, classy and cool.

RedbinD · 09/03/2011 23:04

Evan Tually is a good combination that works. Its of Celtic origin.

edam · 09/03/2011 23:06

Lovely name. Smile Can't see any problem with using a Welsh name when you are not, unless you can't pronounce or spell it, which clearly isn't the case. (The proper Welsh spelling is Ifan pron. ee-van but no-one will question Evan pronounced the English way.)

Interested to hear it's becoming popular - I live in England and have only met one young Evan outside my immediate family. Seems to be much more popular in America for some reason.

edam · 09/03/2011 23:09

It's the Welsh version of John, btw, so same meaning, God is gracious (or merciful).

MelinaM · 10/03/2011 00:49

James is far nicer, Evan looks like an unfinished surname! x

spidookly · 10/03/2011 03:55

Evan is the anglicised version of a Welsh name. There's no room for confusion over spelling or pronucuation, and the name is well-known outside Wales. Your friend is being ridiculous.

Marzipanlover · 10/03/2011 14:43

Thanks for your replies, it's soo hard picking a boy's name!!

I really like it - would have liked that or Ewan for one of our boys but doesn't sound right with our surname Sad

PepsiPopcorn · 10/03/2011 16:55

I like it.

mathanxiety · 10/03/2011 17:26

I wouldn't rule it out based on Welshness, but I think it's a bit girly tbh. Prefer Owen or Euan; they both sound more 'rugged' to my ear, don't exactly know why.

joydivisionovengloves · 10/03/2011 18:01

Evan Dando's not welsh and nobody's ever commented on that!

edam · 10/03/2011 20:49

math - that's odd, I see it the other way round: Evan has more hard consonants. OK, only one and it's not the sharpest but even so...
