Stella - cute or too quirky?

sarahseager · 07/03/2011 12:40

Just wanted to get people's thoughts on the name Stella.

I hadn't considered this name before yesterday and the more I think of it, the cuter I think it could be and also appropriate for when a little girl grows up into a teenager and beyond.

My only concern is that it could be a little too quirky and might need a little girl to be quite confident with bags of personality to carry it off?!?!

My partner has pretty much ruled it out, but I just wanted to see what peoples opinions of it were :)

Also, our surname is Seager - therefore Stella Seager to me sounds really lovely - but I'm not sure if some people think it would be silly!

Thanks for your help.
Sarah

I really like alliterative names, so think it sounds great with your surname.

The only Stella I know is an attractive 20 something who works on wall street and earn megabucks, so to me its a very strong name, in a good way!

DesertOrchid · 07/03/2011 18:33

Lovely name!

Wafflenose · 07/03/2011 20:40

Quite like it, and agree that Estelle IS even better - it's my name! :D

tribpot · 07/03/2011 20:44

I have a cousin called Stella, she is fantastic and also (like most of my cousins) quite a quiet person although confident in her own right. You don't need to be Stella McCartney to carry it off.

Beasknees · 07/03/2011 21:14

I like Stella - it makes me thinks of stars - variations i've coem across are Astra, Astrella, Estella and Esella

Onion1968 · 07/03/2011 21:18

I personally hate matching initials. Stella is not a cute name. Stella is a hard name.

Greenwing · 07/03/2011 21:24

Absolutely love it.
It akes me think of 'star', never lager, and I associate it with Italy and Greece.
Beautiful name.

Also, in my Catholic culture 'Stella Maris' (Star of the Sea) is one of the titles of Our Lady.
Stella Mary would be lovely IMO!

monostar · 24/10/2014 21:33

I feel a bit sorry for people who associate Stella with lager Confused
it is sad if that is the only stella they know about...
Stella is name of Latin origin and has the most beautiful meaning...it means star! It is the most beautiful, magic and powerful name for a girl :)

AuntieStella · 24/10/2014 21:53

No need to feel sorry!

I know the Latin meaning, but still chose my username in honour of the lager.

I wonder what the OP went for in the end? And whatever it is I hope it suits her DD who will be three and a half by now.

Riverland · 24/10/2014 22:02

I love the name! To me, it means 'star'. I wouldn't ever have thought about a brand of lager!

Stella Seager is a very good name.

FixItUpChappie · 24/10/2014 22:12

I adore Stella. Top of my list, except for the fact that it rhymes with my niece. Good combo of beautiful and strong and cool.

Decanter · 25/10/2014 00:40

Tis my DD's name, and our surname begins with S too. I love it. Obvs Wink

IsabellaRockerfeller · 25/10/2014 00:40

Really like Stella but prefer Estelle.

MummyAngharad · 25/10/2014 07:40

I think it's a lovely name, but to be honest the first thing that pops into my head is Stella Artois. If that doesn't bother you then I would say go for it but It would bother me having my little girl associated with alcohol. It's a shame really.

jazzyjenbo · 25/10/2014 09:25

I'm sorry but i don't like this name at all.. Apart from the lager association it reminds me of the baby in shameless so i hear in a strong manc accent! (I can say that as i am a manc, just not a mossside one!)
How about
Estella
Estelle
Astrid
Astra
as alternatives x

ScrambledEggAndToast · 25/10/2014 09:58

Quite a "hard" name. I don't love it but don't hate it either, all about personal choice really.

BikeRunSki · 25/10/2014 10:04

Brilliant name. My 10 year old niece is Stella and it suits her brilliantly. The larger jokes only lasted about 2 weeks. Her baby nn was Lala.

BikeRunSki · 25/10/2014 10:06

I also love alliterative names. DS was nearly something like Kirsty Cozen, but dH hates Kirsty.

Valsoldknickers · 25/10/2014 10:08

Not in the UK so I don't think of lager automatically.

Stella and Estelle are both lovely names although I wouldn't say 'cute'.

Many years ago I knew an old lady called Stella who was lovely and kind. Even though I was only a little kid she would always stop and have a chat. I only have positive associations with the name!

Castlemilk · 25/10/2014 10:16

I knew a really grimy (adult) Stella, and that's my association unfortunately! Plus, the lager.

I do think it's an interesting choice, and I love alliteration in names, but I'd choose Sadie, Sylvie and Saskia over Stella... For me these have a similar feel but are much nicer.

Castlemilk · 25/10/2014 10:18

Oh and of course Seren, which also means 'star'.

postmanpatscat · 25/10/2014 12:52

I work with a Stella (aged about 42) who is from a Greek Cypriot background. Her last name also starts with S since she married. I don't think it's cute or quirky.

Artandco · 25/10/2014 13:06

Estelle is nicer

Estella reminds me of Spanish beer tbh. It's called 'estrella'
