Do you think Percy would ridiculous for a boy today? I pass a Percy Street road sign every day and it's really growing on me!! An old name trend too far or so you like it?!

My gran was at school with a Percy Priddle. I quite like it but think more of Percy Jackson than Percy pig. How about Perceus?

poppydaisy · 03/03/2011 11:45

I like Percy and know a 6 year old one. Agree that a more formal name on bc would be a good idea.

Figgyrolls · 03/03/2011 11:47

I would have loved to call ds Percy, has massive historical reference within my family. Dh vetoed it, but I would far prefer a Percy to a Sidney or Stanley which I just don't get but heh each to their own!

Hedwig3 · 03/03/2011 11:49

I love it as a name BUT

A friend of mine 'points Percy at porcelain' when going for a wee!

What a charmer and he has ruined the name for me.

DoodleNoo · 03/03/2011 12:05

Percy is a strange one - I don't really understand why is hasn't come back alongside so many of the other old-person names that when us thirty-somethings were children were the only the ridiculous-sounding names of elderly great aunts and uncles.

I mean things like Alfred, Stanley, Archie, Freddie, Arthur, Frank for boys and Ruby, Violet, Hattie, Edith, Florence for girls - none of which you would bat an eyelid about these days (not in my London neigbourhood at least).

Go for it - it's distinctive & unusual yet traditional and easy to say and spell. I think it has a lot going for it.

LetThereBeRock · 03/03/2011 12:28

It is ridiculous, and it's an awful name.

CameronCook · 03/03/2011 12:29

Ummm Percy the park keeper was my first thought

bigbluebump · 03/03/2011 12:58

I find Percy not any more ridiculous than Alfie, Archie or Charlie, in fact I like that it is less overused than those. I'd consider a more formal name and quite like Percival - cool and a little different Smile.

happycamel · 03/03/2011 18:43

How about Pierce instead?

nagynolonger · 03/03/2011 19:30

Please don't. My great uncle used to announce 'just off to point percy at the porcelain' when he went to the toilet!

no

zookeeper · 03/03/2011 23:57

yes

MackerelOfFact · 04/03/2011 09:15

But surely loads of boy's names are euphemisms - Dick, Willy, Peter and Johnny immediately spring to mind.

nagynolonger · 04/03/2011 09:34

Dick and Willy yes but I bet their 'real' name are Richard and William. In the same way that Ann/Hannah don't automatically 'say' what the nn Fanny brings to mind. To me Peter and Johnny don't say that's a nn for penis, but Percy does.

deemented · 04/03/2011 09:39

Go for it - one of my friends called her son Percy Moon and he really carries it off!

RetroMum1 · 04/03/2011 11:03

Yes but Percy is a nn the full name is Percival just like Dick and Willy.

Thank you so much for bringing up this thread we had it on our list for DS but ended up using Jasper which now seems to be very popular due to Twilight!! I had forgotten about it until I saw this and DH and I agree that we will definitely use it for the next DS as Stanley has become to popular around here, another Londoner!

nagynolonger · 04/03/2011 11:11

Percival is fine. I have a Richard who is shortend to Rich in the family. No guesses for what is nn is at work (they already have a Richard!).....It makes me cringe every time I hear his work mates refer to him. If I had my time again I would have chosen differently, but he doesn't seem to mind.

Pasiphae · 04/03/2011 12:35

I love Percy/Percival.
I am sure I am influenced by my children infatuation with Percy Jackson.
But the name does rock.

Pasiphae · 04/03/2011 12:36

Perseus with Percy as the nickname?

PepsiPopcorn · 04/03/2011 14:31

Another "no" to Percy I'm afraid, but if you like old-fashioned style names there are lots to choose from :)

rachel1970 · 04/03/2011 14:38

I like Percy and would use Percival as a full name.

sonniebonnie · 04/03/2011 14:44

I think Percy/Percival is great.

sonniebonnie · 04/03/2011 14:46

Percival was used 3 times last year, Percy 17 times.

Elizadoesdolittle · 04/03/2011 15:21

I really like it. I know a little boy called Percy and he is lovely which just makes me like the name even more.
