Ok, the latest contender for the name is a form of the above, but confused about which spelling to go for.

What would the general concensus be?

No K options? I like a K.

JemimaMop · 26/02/2011 20:28

Just to throw another into the mix, my friend's DD is called Cathrina...

PepsiPopcorn · 26/02/2011 20:30

Catrina (or Katrina), because it looks as it sounds.

CanNeverDecide · 26/02/2011 20:32

We'd have too many Ks due to surname and middle name, so want to start with a C!

Catriona, but I am biased!

ItsJustAName · 26/02/2011 20:55

Katrina or Catriona both sound the same.

Katerina, also very pretty, is a different name.

exoticfruits · 26/02/2011 21:18

Catriona is what I think of as the traditional Scottish name with Kitty for short.

sarahtigh · 26/02/2011 22:02

Catriona is the correct gaelic spelling of catherine that is my preference c/katrina would be second , the rest i'm sorry but look like a lifetime of spelling name out

berryshake · 26/02/2011 23:56

Catriona, since you can explain the spelling by saying "cat-ree-oh-nuh". (And since the first person I met with this name spelled it Catriona!)

BustleInYourHedgerow · 27/02/2011 00:14

Catriona, that's how it's spelt in here in Ireland.

overthehillmum · 27/02/2011 00:16

My sister is Catriona, we are in Scotland, she has never had it shortened..

chipmonkey · 27/02/2011 00:19

Caitriona is also correct in Ireland.

sparkle12mar08 · 27/02/2011 08:06

It's not so much Cat-ree-OH-nuh as Ca-TREE-uh-na for most people with that spelling that I know (4 of then, bizarrely!). Slightly different emphasis in the first two syllables and a very short, very soft third one. And not the same as Ca-treen-a either.

I've strayed slightly, but I'd go with Catriona!

PepsiPopcorn · 27/02/2011 08:56

Depends partly where you are. For example, if you're in England you'd get a lot of people who think it's Cat-ree-OH-nuh. There would be a lot of correcting to do.

lalalonglegs · 27/02/2011 09:34

Caterina is Italian and I think the best option, it's classical - I don't think it would make sense to spell it with a K as there is no K in Italian. I don't like Katrina/Catrina - to me they just sound like mispronunications/misspellings of the original.

ooma · 27/02/2011 11:09

Katerina is a is a classic Greek name

NadiaWadia · 27/02/2011 18:48

So you've got Caterina which is Italian (and maybe this version is from other countries too?) And then there's Catriona or Catrina which is Gaelic? All nice.

Catarina though I have never heard of before, are you sure it's a recognised name? It can't be the Spanish version, that's Catalina.

BTW I was at school (in England) with a Catriona who everyone used to call Cat-ree-OH-nuh. She never objected, so I suppose that's what her family called her too!

KenDoddsDadsDog · 27/02/2011 18:50

Nadia - that's how the two people I know pronounce Catriona too.

edam · 27/02/2011 18:52

There's a Catriona in my family who is pron. as Sparkle suggests. Like it but you will get loads of people saying it with a strong 'oh' sound.

emeraldislander · 12/04/2011 19:46

Catarina is a recognised name - had a kid un my class called Catarina, I think she was from Portugal. It sounds different to the other options - quite stacatto cat-a-ree-nah. Equal emphasis on all syllables.

Prunnhilda · 12/04/2011 19:55

I knew a Kurtrina
SO that's another option?

TheCrackFox · 12/04/2011 19:57

Catriona.

loolooskiptotheloo · 12/04/2011 20:04

catrin

witches · 13/04/2011 10:13
