How do you pronounce ELOISE?

Any suggestions?

If any of you have Eloise, do people often mispronounce it? Or do people call them as Elle or Ellie? Are your girls happy to be Eloise???

Dropping the 'h' from hello, then 'eeze'
Does that make sense?!

thumbwitch · 24/02/2011 14:58

ell-oh-eeze.

Tuschinski · 24/02/2011 15:20

as above

pookamoo · 24/02/2011 15:20

"ell-oo-eeze"

diplomatdog · 24/02/2011 19:13

I have an Eloise.

Elle-oh-eeze.

She's known mostly as Ellie through our choice. Not heard it mispronounced but got a few mispellings on the congratulations cards (Elouise).

No idea if she likes it as she's only 8 months but, personally I'd love to be called Eloise Wink

youngjoly · 24/02/2011 19:55

I have an Eloise. Her name is not normally shortened and she does not have a nickname. I think that its because there are so many Ellies and Ellas around, that they don't want another Ellie / Ella and so she is always called by her full name.

It is always pronounced Eh - low - ease. I've read on here that some people do pronounce it Ell-wazs, but no-one has ever called my daughter that. We do have it occasionally misspelt Elouise too.

My daughter loves her name, when I asked her why she said "because it is pretty and unusual". She knows of only one other Eloise (and that is out of two different schools of over 270 in each school - the Eloise she knows is from her social group, she has always been the only Eloise in all the schools (2) and nurseries (2) she has attended.) and all her friendship groups. Incidentally, since 1998 Eloise has never gone higher than 75 in the baby names stats, so whilst you might get pockets of popularity, overall it has never been hugely popular.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 24/02/2011 19:58

nooooo! It is pronounced 'El-wahse' (Helloise, alt. spelling.).

Isn't it?? Confused

thisisyesterday · 24/02/2011 19:59

i would pronounce it elloeeze

never heard it said any differently

chrisrobin · 24/02/2011 20:01

Elle-oh-eeze. I knew a lovely little girl called Eloise, no-one ever shortened it or gave her a nickname.

spidookly · 24/02/2011 20:18

It's pronounced the way The Damned pronounced it.

Honeydragon · 24/02/2011 20:22

El-wahse

in the odd occasions in which people address me as thus, those people do not know that in my head I have flicked them hard upon the forehead and immediately prejudiced them as a pretentious twat.

It is a really good job I have seen your posts before and no you are neither pretentious or a twat and that I quit like you Reshape Grin Wink

ReshapeWhileDamp · 24/02/2011 22:02

Grin honeydragon

Just thought it was a French name, that's all...

thumbwitch · 24/02/2011 22:10

Héloise is a French name, and probably is pronounced Eyl-wahze, but Eloise - never heard that pronounced the French way. It's probably the Anglicised version, like Mary is the Anglicised version of Marie (also pronounced differently) :)

Honey - Grin

Butterbur · 24/02/2011 22:14

Doesn't Heloise have those two little dots over the O? So definitely El Oh Eeze, not El Wahz.

thumbwitch · 24/02/2011 22:17

Butterbur - it does indeed! Just looked it up. There y'go then! Definitely El-oh-eeze. :)
(don't know how to type those)

Honeydragon · 24/02/2011 22:22

Worked in France for a while and holidayed there too, have always been El Oh Eeze

thumbwitch · 24/02/2011 22:31

Honey, no way! looks like Fabreze or something, or perhaps "EEze-a-good, 'eeze Ebenezer good" Baaaaadd..Grin

Honeydragon · 24/02/2011 22:36

Hope88 · 25/02/2011 00:03

Don't worry honeydragon It's actually fun.

Thanks all fr your comments.

Just to recap: Is it just o (like Tom) after El
or o and oo ( like good) ? If you know what I mean Grin

OP posts:
Hope88 · 25/02/2011 00:07

I mean my question is:

Elle o (Tom) eese ?

OR

Elle o (Tom) oo (good) weese ?

My husband is really keen on this name but I can't seem to be able to pronounce it well.

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 25/02/2011 00:20

Ell-oh-eeze. Oh as in poem. Or show. Not Tom.

Some people actually put a u in there, making it Elouise, which would then be pronounced Ell-oo-eeze. I don't like this variation personally.

Ell-o[like Tom]-eeze would be bloody difficult to pronounce.

Honeydragon · 25/02/2011 00:21

What thumb said

OliveMalay · 25/02/2011 00:27

Ell-oh-EEZ

diddl · 25/02/2011 08:36

Ell-oh-eez.

Or go for Elise?Grin
