I have met a Danyal, Daniol, Naiphthan, Caytie and an Alivia. Why do people consign their children to a life time of 'no, that's Daniel spelt...'? Any equally terrible ones out there?

I know an Asia- pronounced Essiya.

privategodfrey · 22/02/2011 17:35

I also worked with a Karen, pronounced Car-en and there is a distinct difference in the way is sounds.

Ka-ren has a short, staccato 'a' like in 'happy'

Car-en has a long, drawn out 'a' like in .. well, car :-)

I used to work with a GROWN MAN in an IMPORTANT JOB called Willyum.

< scrubs brain at connotations it always suggested >

I also knew a little girl called Noami. No, not Naomi. Noami. Pronounced "No-Amy."

Noami IS a name in its own right, I understand.

But Naomi is what everyone else must have called her always. It must have driven the poor girl round the bend.

pinkhyena · 22/02/2011 17:46

BalloonSlayer My name IS Naomi and you would not believe some of the misprounciations I get! I empathise with that poor girl!

DrippingLizzie · 22/02/2011 17:49

I once spoke to the parent of Porsher.

mybootsaremuddy · 22/02/2011 17:59

MelinaM I had to fight back the giggles (as did everyone else in room) when we were having a discusion on what/where/why ect was the reason for our dcs names, and poor Sebasjuns mum told her reason. I think i may have wet my pants when one of the other mums piped up her HUGE mistake!!

foxytocin is Jorge prn as privtegodfrey says (hor-hay)? As this little Jorge is prn George. I dont think his mum even knows it is spanish as she deffinately thinks she made it up!! I remember her making a point of saying she loved the name George but dislikes the letter 'G' and thought Jeorge looked silly so decided to drop the 'E'Hmm!

ningthemerciless · 22/02/2011 18:00

I knew a Jaszon once which I thought was pretty odd. A friends of mine has a grandson called Max spelt Makks [wishtherewasarolleyessmiley].

The Dundee registrar is pretty good for these sorts of stupid variations link. Emoverere anyone?

Drizzela · 22/02/2011 18:04

I have heard of an Iyzik.. as in Issac. Which is not only spelt incorrectly but is spelt phoneticaly around the local accent.

Bonsoir · 22/02/2011 18:07

Bonsoir · 22/02/2011 18:09

BallonSlayer - the French spelling of Naomi is Noémie. It is very confusing, I grant you!

CaveMum · 22/02/2011 18:26

for those of you that have not seen it before this baby name site is the funniest website ever made!

Sit back and try not to wake up the kids with your laughter Grin

cece · 22/02/2011 18:40

Over the years I have known a

Sharne
Sharni
Jessi (not short for anything)

But my persoanl favourite was

Dylon (Dylan)

recycledteen · 22/02/2011 18:41

Jeimmy - What possible reason to add the e?
Shona - but pronounced Shaww-nah.

YouMakeMeWannaLaLa · 22/02/2011 18:52

myboots I fear the mother of the Jorge may be my SiL (same name, same reason)! Blush

You can bet your bottom dollar the people naming these kids have very easy-to-spell/pronounce names and have no experience of the difficulties their kids will encounter [bitter emoticon].

mybootsaremuddy · 22/02/2011 19:05

youmakeme If its your sil with Jorge then prob a diff person as his mother is not married. Bit scary that they both had same reasons for using Jorge instead of George thoughConfused.

HighPriestessBoo · 22/02/2011 19:08

I worked with an Ashliegh once. I kept getting into trouble with her Mum for spelling her name wrong (i.e correctly).

LadyInPink · 22/02/2011 19:11

recycled it's probably because it's pronounced Jamie not Jimmy (you know to rhyme with lei) - still odd I grant you. Grin

privategodfrey · 22/02/2011 19:21

Myboots

Just found this explanation on t'interweb. I was pretty close.

^Jorge says:
March 20, 2007 at 1:22 pm
We are together in our pain

So I?ve settled for a way to explain in writing how to pronounce ?Jorge? to English speakers. Thinking of the uppercase ?H? as a strong, hard sound, then:

?Hor-Heh?

sort of does the trick"

Fatimalovesbread · 22/02/2011 19:22

Humphrey It is Tyler.
I suppose when you pronounce it like Thailand.
But when ever I look at it, it looks more like Taylor or even sailor with a lisp Smile

sungirltan · 22/02/2011 19:22

desi'ree (sic) is a legit name. i have a dutch friend with this name. its pronounced 'dez - ray'.

LB29 · 22/02/2011 19:23

I also have a Phoebe. Even family members spell her name wrongly and it drives me mad. Feebee is terrible though.

ednurse · 22/02/2011 19:23

Once had a patient called La-a

I called out the name as "La" and her mother corrected me: "no it's Ladasha, you need to pronounce the -"

Choufleur · 22/02/2011 19:24

I used to have a boss called Brian Craggs. He frequently got some junk mail addressed to Brain Crapps.

Choufleur · 22/02/2011 19:24

So her name could equally have been said Lahyphena then ednurse. Some people are weird.
