I have met a Danyal, Daniol, Naiphthan, Caytie and an Alivia. Why do people consign their children to a life time of 'no, that's Daniel spelt...'? Any equally terrible ones out there?

Iceaddict · 21/12/2011 17:51

I know a school teacher who taught a child who's parents saw the name guy but read it as Gwee so the poor child was called Gwee spelt Guy! Another girl called her baby Cyan spelt sian after miss reading Sian

tinytalker · 21/12/2011 18:08

When my husband first read the Harry Potter books he had never heard the name Hermione before so read it as her-mee-own!!!!
What a plonker :)

Bunbaker · 21/12/2011 18:29

"Another girl called her baby Cyan spelt sian after miss reading Sian"

Are her middle names Magenta, Yellow and Black?

Iceaddict · 21/12/2011 18:49

That's the trouble with baby name books I suppose, maybe they should give a sounds like example

thefirstmrsrochester · 21/12/2011 20:19

I know of an "Ocean" - pronounced Oh-See-Ahn.

VikingWenceslas · 21/12/2011 20:31

Yeah, that's how it's pronounced in French, quite a common name here.

Nevergarglebrandybutter · 21/12/2011 21:17

i also know a french oceane. i like it.

CheerfulYank · 21/12/2011 21:24

Actually upon reading up on him, D'Brickashaw sounds like a cool guy.

Still a rubbish name though. :)

ThePathanKhansWitch · 21/12/2011 21:49

Can i ask, if you had a very unusual name would you change it?

I think i would tbh, if i really disliked it. I'm nit mad about my name, but it's not offensive.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 21/12/2011 21:49

Can i say i'm not mad about nits at all Xmas Blush.

ColdGlassofWine · 21/12/2011 23:23

I know someone who's a primary teacher in London and has a child in his class whose name is spelt K-A , pronounced kadasha - are the parents nutters !!!

ShengdanRoad · 22/12/2011 01:00

I doubt that very much.

JinglePosyPerkin · 22/12/2011 02:16

ColdGlass - are you sure? See earlier posts about the La-a urban legend Xmas Smile. Not saying it's impossible, just unlikely.

FellatioNelson · 22/12/2011 04:20

There is a (an actual real!) boy's name Osian, though which I think is pronounced like Ocean but slightly more Oh-see-an, so perhaps that is where the recent craze for Ocean stems from. I met a woman whose daughter was called Ocean once years ago (the girl would be about 18 by now) and I was a bit ShockConfused by it, but I wouldn't bat an eyelid now and it has sort of grown on me.

The ones I also met that still grate on me years later though, are Priory and Kenyon for girls. Kenyon is yuk and Priory is just silly.

HouseFullOfChristmasTat · 22/12/2011 07:51

I was recently served in a shop by someone called 'Heaven-Leigh' Hmm

DS has a very standard (but lovely, IMO) traditional name but DH's family just can't spell it. We've received a card addressed to 'Benjermin' this year Angry

domesticungoddess · 22/12/2011 09:53

Le-a where the dash as the mum stated 'not silent' ie ledasha

YourCallIsImportant · 22/12/2011 10:13

I know a little girl called Aleix, pronounced Alex of course. Why bother?

tooclosetocall · 22/12/2011 11:19

Kaaytee (normal spelling for me would be Katy)
Yohaness (Johannes) to which I imagine someone shouting from the getto 'Yo, Hannes, check dis out..'

Super smug Xmas Grin I'm happy to be classic and boring

ThePathanKhansWitch · 22/12/2011 12:35

There is Oisin (Osh-sheen) who is a figure from Irish mythology, it means 'Little Deer'.

StealthPolarBear · 22/12/2011 12:44

I would assume that was frence -"Waz-zan"

cjbk1 · 22/12/2011 12:58

NewBikeForChristmas · 22/12/2011 14:13

MamaLazarou · 22/12/2011 14:27

Enough Ladashas already!

Vylet · 20/06/2013 14:07

Vylet is my birth name. I have always liked that my name was different. It's in fact a Czech word meaning small trip or jaunt.
Kinda aggravates me when people assume I would rather spell it Violet. That's not my name. I am not VI-O-LET.
