Worst spelling of perfectly ordinary names? Elyviya anyone?

I have met a Danyal, Daniol, Naiphthan, Caytie and an Alivia. Why do people consign their children to a life time of 'no, that's Daniel spelt...'? Any equally terrible ones out there?

saw someone in a mag last week who had a kid called DKNY to rhyme with bikini...

Dawnyann · 03/03/2011 11:09

Trebuchet - that HAS to be a joke surley? Grin

Jaydles · 03/03/2011 19:30

I think the Zak thing only annoys me for people I have told repeatedly! Its not short for Zachary his name is just Zak maybe it is weird :) And yes I too would have thought any spelling of Jared would indicate a male baby but clearly not to the lady at baby clinic. Isn't trebuchet a clothes range or something??
Haha I love DKNY to rhyme with bikini thats amazing how do people think of these names

NettoSuperstar · 03/03/2011 19:42

It's been mentioned on here as being badly spelled, and it is.
I have a Niamh, spelled-NIAMH, that's the name, and the spelling.
Neve, and Nieve, and Neive, or even Neeve, are not the name.

Yes, we've had bonkers spellings, and pronunciations of it, my favourite is the Christmas card adressed to 'Knife', but DD has a real name, not a made up spelling.

Most people love it though, and it's not ten a penny here yet either.
That was important to me, though I know it only takes one soap child to be named it and I'm doomed!

Mind you, my brother named his new baby, Eilidh. When my Dad told me the name he said, 'it's a weird name that doesn't look how it sounds'.
I said, 'hmm, like Niamh then' Grin

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/03/2011 20:05

my favourite is the Christmas card adressed to 'Knife' FFS, that's priceless.

lilyberry · 03/03/2011 20:11

Psymon? Blimey.

NettoSuperstar · 03/03/2011 20:20

Yep, Knife. I chuckled.Grin

As the years go by, the cards get better, but when DD was small, and parents were writing them, I'd say only 10% were spelled correctly, and at least 50% were bonkers.

The kids spell names better than the parents usually, as they see the names every day.

I know I've spelled Aleesha/Alicia/Alysha and Konner/Conner/Konar wrong.

Trebuchet · 03/03/2011 20:43

Swear down dkny/bikini the woman was photo'd 'n everything!!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/03/2011 20:46

Netto DD is Emmeline, you should have seen the Christmas cards we got last year and she is 3.5, so they've all had 3 years of cards with her name on. If we got a card with all our names spelt correctly it got pride of place on the mantlepiece Grin

I think the most eyebrow-raising one for me was Taelyr. I can't remember whether it should be pronounced Tyler or Taylor.

Having read here about some spellings being normal in other regions/countries, I googled for this variation and apparently it's mostly regarded as an uncommon girl's name - which might be a problem for the boy concerned who's probably old enough now to google for himself.

MyBrainIsOutOfTune · 04/03/2011 00:51

Kamilla is perfectly normal in Norway, where there is often a K instead of C - Christian/Kristian, Camilla/Kamilla, Catherine/Katherine, and so on.

I know of a boy called Emiil. To avoid the usual pronunciation of Eh-mill, the parents inserted an extra i. Because odd spellings haven't really caught on here yet, it looks extra bonkers. They wanted to be certain he was called eh-meel. Well, why not use Emile, thenHmm

I dated a Portuguese man who's cousin was called Guy. The family all pronounced it Gooey and were furious with him that he'd started pronouncing it the English way after living here for a while. I can see why he did now as some people on this thread are coming across rather nasty about foreign names.

As for the comments about grouping school kids into sets according to their name - how nasty and judgemental.

PrettyCandles · 04/03/2011 08:10

I knew a man called Bryanne. He later changed it to spell as it sounds: Brian.

I nearly got lumbered with a pair of utterly unpronounceable, unspellable, names. (Admittedly, my parents did not realise at the time that we were going to stay in England.) So I count my lucky stars that I ended up with a merely weird name!

gapbear · 05/03/2011 09:32

Deejai. The mum liked the sound of the initials, but felt it wouldn't be a 'proper' name. Fair enough, I suppose.

And one of the mums at a school I worked at registered the birth name of her daughter correctly (or at least, the registrar did, I have a feeling this mum was sadly illiterate), and has ever since missed a crucial letter out of her DD's name.

Louise.

Poor child.

Taught a XRYSTAL once...i know, I know..

MamaBear4cubs · 13/10/2011 03:56

TheSecondComing: What is the correct spelling of Neive? Shevaun is phonetic spelling of Siobhan I'm sure, and RachAel and MichAel are the correct way of spelling those Jewish names. My son is Micah (spelt the Biblical way) but he often gets Michael (verbally) and MichEal (documents).

As for Jorje....if you're going to spell it the spanish way (which is JorGe btw), you can't call him George. Sheesh! Unless you ARE Spanish, but want your child to be completely anglicised!
iismum - so is it pronounced Hor-Hey-ya? (jorjia)
Fatimalovesbread - I'm sure its Tyler as in Thai-ler But I see it and want to say Th-ayler
Ednurse - OMG La-a? It made me SNORT out loud....which is way more ebarassing than LOL!
BabyIsabella & sahbear - Surely not, Czazquiyah? Its more than dreadful, its downright cruel! as is Searlait (Charlotte) :-(
lockets - Cheyenne is the correct spelling. No A.
Red Fairy - Chynna is probably named after the female wrestler

DejaWho · 13/10/2011 08:00

Jak and Jaimz.

allieballiebee · 13/10/2011 09:05

Isn't Danyal an Arabic spelling? There are at least 3 Danyals (all Muslim) at Dd's school.

chocolateyclur · 13/10/2011 09:47

Pheebe.

Apparently it's the "new way" to spell it. Sure, if you can't spell.

MrsStephenFry · 13/10/2011 12:07

I wish people would stop repeating the "I know of someone called the kid chlymidia" story, its a very old urban myth with racist origins: www.snopes.com/racial/language/names.asp

MamaLazarou · 13/10/2011 14:47

Saw someone on Facebook a while back called Taaylaa... may have started a thread about it, actually!

DooinMeCleanin · 13/10/2011 15:02

The person who encountered a Poppii-maii wasn't on Moshi Monsters were they?

I only ask as I have a Poppee-maii, who is on Moshi Monsters, except she's called something entirely different. Poppy is our dog's name. Mae was suggested for her sisters name by her cousin and has stuck in her head since. Why the silly spelling I have no idea, but it's marginally better than the time she refused to answer to anthing but but Cherry Apple Rose. Imagine shouting that out in the park Blush
