Anyone else just not really like boys' names?

I'm currently 17 weeks with dc2, don't know what we're having and won't either - but I'm having the same problem I did with DD. Going through all the names, I just don't tend to like boys' names! The few that I do like are my brother-in-law's name, my sister's boyf's name and my cousin's husband!

I also like Jeffrey, as that was a family name - but DH likes Geofrrey as THAT was a family name, so no agreement there... I've gone through the family tree and turned up such gems as Walter and half a million Johns and James's -sigh-

Are you looking for a traditional/classic name, unusual, or a modern name for your potential DS? x

CuppaTeaJanice · 17/02/2011 18:17

What are the names that you do like but can't use?

I agree, boys names either seem to be overused, 'old man' names or scream 'I have an ASBO' or 'I went to Eton'. There aren't many nice, interesting but neutral names around.

whattheheckisthisflaminplace · 17/02/2011 18:24

We liked James, Ian, Josh, Alex, Max

Trinaluce · 17/02/2011 18:29

Melina Traditional/unusual! Definitely not modern, nothing in the sleb line...

Cuppa Perfectly phrased, exactly what I mean!

Oh, and the names I like are Alastair, Christopher and Craig.

James is my dad (and his dad, and his dad, and his dad etc etc), Ian is my uncle, Josh is one of my friend's sons, Alex is my cousin.... AAARGH!

I'm the opposite - I find very few girl names that I love, and very very few that both I and my husband love. Boys names, those I have quite a few of. Maybe people are more wired for one kind of name or another? I've heard a lot of mums with similar problems (not being able to find a name they like for one sex but are fine with the other).

Trinaluce · 17/02/2011 18:56

We had page after page of girls' names for DD, and a first name and middle name for a boy all set up! Just want 'backups' so if this one is a boy but doesn't look like the names we have picked out, we have alternatives.

This may sound weird, but we were convinced we were having a boy first time around and the full name was picked out for so long that it almost feels wrong to want to use it now - like it's her unspoken middle names or something Confused

We are finding it really difficult to choose a boys name & Im convinced Im having a boy purely for this reason lol

Maybe it's because I've got 3 sisters?

I'm having this problem- we used the one boys name I really love for DS, and if DC2 (who is due tomorrow) is a boy I'm worried he'll get saddled with a name that I only quite like.

(DS is Nicholas, by the way, which is a fabulous name, in my opinion!)

Trinaluce · 17/02/2011 21:30

I like Nicholas - but it's the name of mum's priest. Who she fancies. But who I think is dull as dishwater Wink

i like boys names... had an awful job deciding on one for ds3 as we had so many to choose from!

really though, i don't thikn it matters if you choose the name of your cousins husband!

Trinaluce · 17/02/2011 21:36

I'm sure it doesn't, especially as they're now living in Oz - but I would like to be a TEENSY bit original!

how about

Benedict
Edward
Patrick
Guy

IWillCountToThree · 17/02/2011 21:42

We decided on Jacob Alexander for DC3 if it tured out to be a boy, after struggling for ages with names.

He didn't look like a Jake Sad

His name is Joel. It was almost 3 weeks before we decided on a name. Blush I figured if it fit for more than 24h it was going to stick!

Make a big list, see what fits!
(It still may be a girl!)

Trinaluce · 17/02/2011 22:15

Not keen on Benedict or Guy, know someone called Edward who would TOTALLY take over the fact that we'd named the baby after him (no matter how much we said we hadn't!), Patrick is an ex-colleague of DH's that he hated....

All the boy's names just seem to have back-stories!

Ewan
William

Oliver
Samuel

Liam
Aidan
Gregory

Alistair is lovely - was on our shortlist. I also quite liked Alec and Alex (more common) but didn't go with our surname.

Agree boys names are hard. I wanted Theo and DH wanted Archie but we compromised on Laurie in the end.

LoopyLoopsHulaHoops · 18/02/2011 21:06

Can't bear any of the names mentioned (sorry), I really struggle with boys names. Hope mine's another DD, pure;y so I don't have to come up with a boy name!

I totally had same problem. Identical feelings.
We went with......
Edwin
People do react old man but say it once and it sticks. It's easy to spell. Lots of nick names. Very English.
I found it by using this exact thread.
My DD is Eliza.
It took me a long time to love my boys name.
