Our surname is a bit unwieldy and does not go with some of the names i would have liked for the DCs.

If you could choose your surname, what would it be?

I like westwood or Weston - go with all of our names and pretty much every name I like. Simple and easy to spell without being too common.

Also like Costello if I had to go for something a bit more adventurous

Fitzpatrick

Or Sinclair

Actually quite like the surname I have, unusual with vague french origins...!

just delighted not to be something like Ratter or Waddell or something

Suncottage · 13/02/2011 19:31

I love Sinclair. When I was at school I wanted to be Katherine Winterman.

Now I love my name, it is timeless and classic. Thanks Mum and Dad Grin

ps Katherine is my middle name

I don't think I would ever change my surname.. In fact I know I wouldn't because I had the chance when I got married and didn't. Both my name and husband's name are 6 letters, 2 syllables, not too common, sometimes prone to mispronunciation and need confirmation of spelling most of the time. I like both of them equally.

If thinking about surnames I like the sound of a few come to mind.... Lockheart, Kennedy, anything doubled barrelled or starting with "de".

HeartShapedValiumSandwich · 13/02/2011 21:00

Sinclair is too smooth. I know a girl called Ogilvy. I thought wow, excellent sur name. She just shrugged and looked confused.

Actually years ago I used to work with a girl called Fiona Valentine and I told her that I loved her name. She was flattered but agaain, slightly freaked out I think!

MrsDeidreIppy · 13/02/2011 22:23

Fabian
Carmichael

justmilkpleasenosugar · 13/02/2011 23:08

My Mum's maiden name was Champion...which I think is bloody brilliant....!!!

calaloo · 13/02/2011 23:11

I've always wanted the surname Scott as I see it as strong. I think the fact that the person I've always looked up to has this surname sways me!

Mine is Tyler. Bleugh!

bronze · 14/02/2011 11:29

I also like a name thats in our family.
Herington
If I ever became famous I would adopt it

bruffin · 14/02/2011 11:39

Actually I have a "West" name and really like it. My maiden name was a common greek name but spelt different to the norm and I had to spell it all the time.

My only problem with my married name is that every body asks "has it got an "e" "

Also it is the surname of a drug addicted actress who lived in our area and for a week we had some unpleasant phone calls from what sounded like a "dealer" looking for her.

shouldnotbehere · 14/02/2011 12:21

I would have either Llewellyn or Trevanion. I have friends with these surnames, and have always thought their surname beautiful.

ratspeaker · 14/02/2011 20:41

I like the Icelandic way of giving last names.
You have your father ( or even mothers ) first name then add son or dottir (daughter)

twirlymum · 14/02/2011 20:54

My maiden name should have been double-barrelled, but my dad dropped one of the names (thank god it was awful!).
My married name is great, a solid unfussy name, but DH's family changed it to it's current form after the 1st world war, as they fled Germany. It should be Ruppersberg Shock

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 15/02/2011 11:30

Adair my DD's teacher is Mrs Street (but you know how kids all dispense with Mrs and use Miss) and I'd never, ever thought of that until you posted!!

I'm not all that fond of my surname (I got it when I married) it's OK, not too bad, I suppose - for some reason, people can't spell it, they always ask, I have to use the police alphabet (is that what it's called, you know what I mean, though?). It's like Sweeney. See? Nothing too tricky - I just can't worked out why people are so foxed by it.

So I think I'd pick something like 'Featherstonehorse' and say, 'It's Fanshaw, actually'.

5GoMadOnAZ650 · 15/02/2011 11:44

I love the surname I was born with which was Hadley, my surname now is rubbish but it's my stepdad's who brought me up so I'll always like it for that reason. My dp and dd's have a lovely surname, hopefully we will get married at some point so I can be a Lilley too.

SilkStalkings · 15/02/2011 16:36

I've always thought Portuguese Da names were cool:
Da Costa
Da Souza

Happy1239 · 13/03/2019 20:07

I like Oliver. Sounds sweet for a surname

bakedstrawberry · 13/03/2019 20:28

I like Clifton or Whiteside

Tillygetsit · 13/03/2019 22:58

I had a really atrocious maiden name then an equally appalling one with my first husband. Luckily my second has a straightforward very common surname which I love.

3in4years · 14/03/2019 08:10

I knew a with the surname Boom. She was engaged to a guy with the surname Kerr. She joked about double barrelling.
