Is this awful?

Hugh Lee?

Lee is our surname. Does the combination of Hugh and Lee sound like a chinese takeway dish (as my MIL rudely suggested!) I know longer first names would be better but most boys names I like a short, one syllable. (Hugo has been vetoed by DH so this is not a viable alternative).

'Hugely'...sorry.

TallulahDoesTheHula · 10/02/2011 14:08

Is it a bit strange together, sorry

CharlieBoo · 10/02/2011 14:09

You need something longer...sorry

LawrieMarlow · 10/02/2011 14:10

Sounds odd.

LadySanders · 10/02/2011 14:11

hugo lee is MUCH better, she says, unhelpfully

belgo · 10/02/2011 14:11

Agree, Hugo Lee is better. Not Hugh.

sonniebonnie · 10/02/2011 14:12

No, not good!

With Lee, I'd suggest a two syllable name ending in a consonant, for example:

Quentin Lee
Thomas Lee
Felix Lee
Marcus Leee

sonniebonnie · 10/02/2011 14:12

sorry about the last e...

belgo · 10/02/2011 14:12

I don't usually suggest this, but can you not give him a double barrelled surname, with your maiden name? Hugh would sound much better with another surname before the Lee.

Sarsaparilllla · 10/02/2011 14:15

Sorry I don't like it, it just doesn't sound right when you say the names together, I'd have a rethink personally :)

I agree with sonnniebonnie, a 2/3 syllable name sounds better with Lee

greenzebra · 10/02/2011 14:16

Yeah I agree I think you need a longer name

AllieW · 10/02/2011 14:24

Second the Hugo suggestion.

apples82 · 10/02/2011 14:31

I agree with either Hugo or a longer name, it sounds a bit like a sneeze to me Grin

flopsy1974 · 10/02/2011 14:54

Not keen.

Hugh Lee does not sound great, to be honest. Agree that a 2 syllable name would work much better (especially one that won't be shortened!).

From the suggestions above I like Marcus Lee and Quentin Lee. The problem with Thomas Lee is that it may become Tom Lee which isn't great again.

cheapFlower · 10/02/2011 15:10

sorry, yes. very awful IMHO.
I think you need at least 2 syllables for DS's first name.

GetOrfMoiLand · 10/02/2011 15:13

No - it sounds daft, I agree with your MIL.

If you want a one syllable name what about

James Lee
John Lee
Charles Lee
Jake Lee
Mark Lee
George Lee

GetOrfMoiLand · 10/02/2011 15:14

I can't think of any more one syllable boy names - I had to rack my brain to come up with that lot!

tammytoby · 10/02/2011 15:14

Just don't shorten Charles to Charlie - Charlie Lee Grin.

Sidge · 10/02/2011 15:24

It's the soft end to Hugh that doesn't work well with Lee, so I think you need a hard ending name such as

Marc(us)
Jon(athan)
Greg(ory)
Adam

rachel1970 · 10/02/2011 15:37

I agree. A 2 syllable name with a 'hard' ending sounds great with Lee. I like
Adam Lee
Quentin Lee
Tristan Lee

rachel1970 · 10/02/2011 15:39

And I'd avoid first names that get shortened to -y or -ie

such as Charlie Lee, Jamie Lee, Alfie Lee, Johny Lee etc.

PoorTaxPayer · 10/02/2011 16:25

Though I agree with the others that Hugh Lee doesn't sound brilliant, I felt a wee bit sorry for you so to make you feel better: it's not as bad as someone I went to school with who was called Hugh Janus. Seriously.
xx

Bruce?
Spike?
