Classic V Brave?

I now have two girls names in the running.

Anna Primrose Ivy

and

Isadora Beatrix Ivy 'Dora'

Which would you plump for? The timeless, classic Anna or the more interesting, but braver choice of Isadora (Dora)?

With "dora" she's going to have to deal with a lot of Dora the Explorer stuff.

Hedwig3 · 03/02/2011 12:20

Wow, either, both lovely!

Nice work Smile

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 03/02/2011 12:21

I like Isadora. Well - I like both, but would probably pick Isadora.

But I'm going to hide - I know how this thread will go (re:Classic v. Brave debate).

belgo · 03/02/2011 12:22

I wouldn't consider Isadora brave, it's a normal name. Very pretty, Dora is a nice nickname.

Primrose is dreadful.

belgo · 03/02/2011 12:22

Dora the explorer isn't a bad association is it?

Feegle · 03/02/2011 12:25

They are both lovely but I prefer Anna.

SoupDragon · 03/02/2011 12:27

"Dora the explorer isn't a bad association is it?"

It is if you have to deal with it endlessly, and I doubt she's going away any time soon.

wintersniffle · 03/02/2011 12:28

I love Isadora and like Anna but wouldn't use Primrose and Ivy together - two plant/flower names together sound a tiny bit odd.

Dora is a great nickname and can think of worse things to be associated with than Dora the explorer Smile

PaperView · 03/02/2011 12:28

Isodora made me think of "wizadora" but is a lovely name.

I prefer Anna though.

belgo · 03/02/2011 12:30

There are far worse things a child could be called.

I have a name doesn't rhyme with anything, nor did it have any associations with anything. ANd still my friends managed to pick apart my name and call me something different.

BarbieLovesKen · 03/02/2011 12:31

Hmm both are beautiful.

I'd probably go slightly for the more unusual Isodora though.

Ok, I'll admit at the minute - when I hear Dora, I immediately think "the explorer" however, like all kids toys/ shows etc.. its going to go and would be a very silly reason not to call your child a lovely name over

Anna Beatrix Ivy may be a possibility so Primrose is not set in stone.

Anna or Dora? Anna seems more girly and Dora more strong and tomboy-ish. I do not care about the Dora the Explorer connections.

I worry that I'll regret using a safe name but then will I regret Dora if it becomes overly popular and loses its spark?

Anna Primrose Ivy

I love the whole thing. Its beautiful.

BarbieLovesKen · 03/02/2011 12:39

Oh Primrose Ivy is sooooo much nicer - really lovely.

I hate Beatrix (sorry)

MusicalMummyJules · 03/02/2011 12:42

I thought the same BluddyMoFo! I think Isodora is lovely though and would definitely opt for that one :)

rachel234 · 03/02/2011 12:49

Don't see why one name is more brave or classic than the other Confused.

I like Isadora and Anna - both are beautiful feminine names. Anna is perhaps a little more common whereas Isadora is a bit more unique, which I like. Also Isadora gives more nickname opportunities.

belgo · 03/02/2011 12:51

If you choose a name because you love it, there is no way it will lose it's spark to you just because it becomes more popular.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 03/02/2011 13:07

Dora is a fucking awful name, the same as Primrose.
Anna on the other hand is very nice.
Nicknames don't have to derive from the 'proper' first name. Our DD is called Bobs or Bobbins. Her name bears no relation to either of those.

rachel234 · 03/02/2011 13:25

"Dora is a fucking awful name, the same as Primrose. Our DD is called Bobs or Bobbins."

Thank god we all have different tastes Smile.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 03/02/2011 13:29

Tis a good job eh? If we all liked the same names we'd be over run with Max, Hannah and Jessica (unless that's only at my DDs school)

putthekettleon · 03/02/2011 13:30

Both lovely and I don't think Isadora is actually such a brave choice anymore - I know a 3 year old Isadora and a 7 month old Dora, but no baby Annas!

kerala · 03/02/2011 14:04

Both fine - dont think Isadora particularly "brave" you clearly have never attended a playgroup in North London Grin. She will probably be called Izzy by her friends. I would lose Primrose though - dreadfully twee and makes me think of Harold Shipmans wife.

SE131975 · 03/02/2011 14:32

"Don't see why one name is more brave or classic than the other Confused."

Isn't that obvious? Anna is a classic that will never date. It's been in the top 100 for many many years.

Isadora COULD become the latest fad (like Isabelle etc), therefore date very badly.

If a celebrity goes on to name their dd Isadora, it will catch on fast. Whereas if a celeb named their dd Anna, Anna would still be Anna, as it is. It may jump up a few slots but that's it.

Isadora is not classic enough, not timeless enough to hold its own. Anna is.

I feel like I've just talked myself out of using Isadora.
