Liked Daniel but ruled it out as hated Dan / Danny
Also Catherine but can't stand Cathy/ Cath (although like Cate / Kitty)

JanMorrow · 03/06/2011 11:00

Robsie, acaseofyou

My favourite shortened form of Henry is Hal, which is great and not that common if you're looking for an alternative!

Chicksy · 03/06/2011 11:02

I loved Daniel and didnt use it for DS1 as I hated Dan / Danny.

In the end we chose it for DS2 but I need not have worried. He is 3 now and if anyone attempts to use a nn he just ignores them until they use Daniel. It is funny and people soon catch on not to shorten it.

Continuum · 03/06/2011 11:02

Another one here that likes Daniel but dislikes Dan and Danny.

Also Thomas, I do like Tom but not Tommy.

I know names don't always get shortened but we're terrible for it, we called ds a name that couldn't be shortened and his nickname is just the first letter!

Coralanne · 03/06/2011 11:09

Friend's DS is called Monster by everyone outside their family. (He's 25 and plays football and Rugby)

Why is he called Monster? Last name is Cooke, by extension Cookie Monster and then Monster.?????????????

mummymeister · 03/06/2011 11:20

Myfanwy beautiful lyrical name - the one in my class at school was called Fanny. I rest my case. We have a Josephine and chose it because we liked the nickname - josie or jo but hate feeny.

bebejones · 03/06/2011 11:49

Christopher or Christian - dislike Chris... alot! (Know quite a few of them, which also puts me off)

Alexander - Don't like Alex...but Zander/Xander in ok I guess. Hmm

Peter - don't like peat Pete! Wink

Joseph - Don't like Joey, a bit girly & already have a Phoebe so people would think we were doing a 'Friends' theme. We got asked a million times if DD was named after the character from Friends...er....NO! Hmm

Abigail I think is beautiful- don't like Abbie or Gail!

Katherine or Caitlyn - Don't like Kate or worse... Katie, eeeuuurrgh!!!

Florence - Flo is just so harsh sounding IMO, and also sounds a bit like a sewer outlet!

KatieWatie · 03/06/2011 11:53

Victoria - don't like Vicky
Elizabeth - don't like Liz or Betty, although Beth is lovely
Rebecca - don't like Becky
Samuel - not at all keen on Sam
Joshua - not keen on Josh

MotherofPearl · 03/06/2011 12:34

I quite like Leonard but absolutely don't like Len or Lennie.

LCandey · 03/06/2011 13:12

I love the name Roya (and it's on my list of favourite baby names) but I do have concerns about it being shortened to Roy, which conjures up images or Roy from Corrie..

fairydoll · 03/06/2011 13:50

Not really a shortening. I love Natalie but despise Na'a'lie

notsoqueenofclean · 03/06/2011 14:00

DD1 is Natalie and I too hate it when people drop the 'T' in it. Really annoying.

Nobody calls her Nat either, because I absolutely hate it. She will correct people too telling them her name has a 'T' in it or that her name is Natalie not Nat.

Happymum22 · 03/06/2011 14:09

I'm more the opposite- i tend to love the nickname hate the full name...
I love lotty, lottie, charlie but hate charlotte
tilly but hate matilda
libby but hate eliazabeth
Jess but hate jessica
Chessie but hate francesca
Bella but have annabel
Georgie/georgia but not georgina
saffy but not saffron sapphire
emie but not emilia/emilie/emily
Lexy but not alexandra
Tori but not victoria..not vicky actually
Evie but not eveline
meelie or mia but not amelia
same with boys actually...

ollie but not oliver
robbie but not robert
liam or will but not william
freddie but not frederick
rich but not richard
eddie but not edward
harry but not harold

but i hate the full names to the extent i dont want to use them!

wudu · 03/06/2011 14:14

Most of the 'full name only please' people that I know, are only called by their full name only.

I do have a few friends that gave up as children though, because despite correcting people when they call them a nn instead of their real name, every time they did something new, the nn-correction had to start again.

My favourite ever girls name is Elizabeth. I utterly adore it. Dh vetoed it because he hates the nn Liz - I tried to fight him on it and insist that she'd be called Beth (the nn I would have used) but he didn't want to take the risk. I can begrudgingly kind of see what he means.

My most-hated nn would be Ellie. I can't stand it.
So I would rule out Eleanor, Elouise, Elena, Elenora (and possibly even Elizabeth Shock ) because of this.

I love Genevieve and Jenna, but think Jenny is an awful name.

I also agree about Victoria and Vicky, bleurgh.

For me, it mostly works the other way round though.

I love Abbie, but not Abigail.

I love Millie, but not Mildred/Millicent.

I love Sam, but not Samantha/Samuel.
I love Max, but not Maximus/Maximillian/Maxwell.

I love Mia, but not Amelia.
I love Harry, but not Henry.

There's probably a million more Blush

MeantToStopAtTwo · 03/06/2011 14:21

Gabrielle or Gabriella, as I don't like Gaby or Gabs.

ThisIsMyLogIn · 03/06/2011 15:29

Jessica - but I love all 3! Jessica, Jess & Jessie

ThisIsMyLogIn · 03/06/2011 15:30

HATE HENRY (poor baby boy being called that) - LOVE Harry

shreddinghippo · 03/06/2011 15:52

Matthew. I love the full name, but Matt, yuck. There were about 5 in my school year, all shortened to Matt.

pranma · 03/06/2011 15:55

I like Jim as a nn for James and I love Finn -is it that common?I only know one and have met another-Finlay seems much mote commom.

pranma · 03/06/2011 15:55

more

ooma · 03/06/2011 16:55

Lucy - referred to as Loose!!!!!

venusandmars · 03/06/2011 17:40

Ah but wait till they go to school - you'll have no control over them anyway -

In dd's year Karen became Kaz, Emma became Emz, Morag became Mogie (sounded like moag-ee) and one person became Feldy (because they used to live in Aberfeldy).

minipie · 03/06/2011 17:44

Frances/Franscesca - dislike Fran
Elizabeth - dislike Liz and Lizzie (lots of other good nns though)
Natalie/Natasha - dislike Nat

With boys' names it tends to be the other way round, like the short form but not the long.

ScatterChasse · 03/06/2011 18:40

We had three Rebeccas, but they all shortened it differently. We had a Bex, Becky and Becca. But my sisters year had four, all called Rebecca.

And we had an Imogen we called Genie (but she didn't like being called Imogen at all)

itsohsoquiet · 03/06/2011 19:18

I love Joseph, Jessica, Charlotte, Alexis and Elizabeth but can't stand any of the nicknames so would never use any of them.
