Maximilian is lovely but I hate Max.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 30/01/2011 18:28

I like Anthony but don't like Ant or Tony.

cece · 30/01/2011 18:31

Andrew
David
Julia, Juliana or other names similar as don't like Jules
Rebecca
Jessica
Robert
Victoria
Elizabeth
Alexander

I could go on.... it seems a surprising amount of perfectly lovely names can be discounted because I don't like the shortened version!

Having said that DS1 has a long name but we only ever use the shortened version... Smile

DS2 on the other hand has a nn as his proper name and people are always lengthening it to the 'full' version! Grin

Chocolocolate · 30/01/2011 19:15

Oh yes, and Juliet as I really don't like Julie or Jules.

JojoMags · 30/01/2011 19:16

Patrick - Pat
Nicholas - Nick
Samuel - Sam (Sam not bad but love Samuel and know the full name would never stick)
Daniel - Dan/Danny

Elizabeth - Liz
Eleanor - Ellie (can't stand this one!)
Isobel - Izzy

On the other hand, I love Lottie and Connie, and much prefer them to the full names Smile

JojoMags · 30/01/2011 19:19

Oh yeah and:

William - Will/Wills
Alexander - Alex
Oliver - Ollie

Boys names are far worse

MothershipG · 30/01/2011 19:34

Nell is lovely (my Gran and Great Aunt's name) but wouldn't use it because my Dad would insist on singing some old song he knew about Nellie who had a pimple on her belly, took the shine off for me! Smile

BarbieLovesKen · 30/01/2011 20:15

Rebecca as I hate, hate, hate Becky.

Matthew as around here it will be shortened to Mattie, which is fine but Ts are dropped resulting in "Ma -- ie"

chipmonkey · 30/01/2011 20:22

Lockets, I knew a Dommo! Didn't mind Dom so much but that totally put me off!

WanderingSheep · 30/01/2011 20:22

Our DD is Isabel, which I nearly didn't use as I didn't like Izzy. She is now three and I love Izzy as a nickname because I think it would suit her, but if anyone calls her Izzy she says, "I'm not Izzy call me Isabel!" Grin

Our DD2 is due in the next few weeks and we are going to call her Charlotte with the nickname Lottie. I don't mind Charlie/Charley either but we have a relative with a DD called Charlie.

chipmonkey · 30/01/2011 20:26

Oh, and I could never have Richard in case he got called Dick. I would then have a Tom, Dick and Harry!Grin

Greythorne · 30/01/2011 20:29

Tatiana (I love)
Tat or Tatty (I hate)

Inertia · 30/01/2011 21:03

I love Isobel but not keen on Izzy, though we thought about variations along the line of Bel. Too late now though as a close relative has a baby Isabelle.

Also love the name Melissa but not sure about Mel as a nn (tried to persuade dh that Elsie could be a nn for Melissa but he wasn't convinced!)

I agree Jojo, boys' names are much worse for it.

I love Peter, but really don't like Pete.

babybythesea · 01/02/2011 08:10

Really pleased it's not just me!

I love Natalie, but can't stand 'Nat'.
Daniel.
Rebecca.

McDreamy · 01/02/2011 08:17

My favourite girls name in Rebecca, I think it's beautiful, elegant and timeless but I really really don't like Becky so we have never used it. My SIL has just used it for her new DD and she is already being called Becky.

smother · 02/02/2011 09:16

I'm also very fond of the name Rebecca and dislike Becky. Becs is a lovely nn though and I'm sure you could avoid Becky.

It's the other way round for some girls' names: I love some nicknames and not the fullnames. e.g.

Jess - Love. Jessica - dislike.
Josie - Love. Josephine - ok, but wouldn't love to use it.

smother · 02/02/2011 09:20

ooh and also:

Maggie - gorgeous! Margaret - not so nice.
Kate - wonderful! Katherine - yawn.
Tess - divine! Tessa - yuk.
And so on...

Also I love Jasmine but Jazz? That would really put me off!

Christmasbelle · 02/02/2011 14:22

Love Scarlett but didn't go with it in end. We considered using Ettie as a nn.

SilkStalkings · 02/02/2011 16:16

Like Tabitha but Tabs/Tab is a horrible nn that you just can't stop people using.

AllieW · 02/02/2011 18:05

smother, I share your dislike of Josephine. However, Josie can also be used as nn for Josette which is much nicer in my view!

Agree also with your dislike of Jazz as a nn for Jasmine. Think I would try & insist on full name usage in that instance.

mannicmummyhavinaiccy · 09/02/2011 13:15

I have a Tabitha, and I only ever call her by full name, IL's insist on calling her Tabs, I get so angry! but she calls herself Tabby, and loves it. Considering calling DD2 Elizabeth, cant wait to see what they call her, not! and DS is Toby, they shorten it to Tobes?!? drives me mad Angry
