BarbieLovesKen · 29/01/2011 19:09

Here's the shortlist of baby names I'm considering that I generated with Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder. Let me know what you think.

Boys
Darragh (possibly spelt Daire, prounounced Dar - a)
Iarla (more than likely spelt Iarlaith, prounounced Ear-la)
Naoise (prounounced Nee-sha)
Rían (Pronounced Ree-ann)
Tallon
Tiernan

Girls
Kate (we're definate on this)

Will you all please just pick one for us. This boy's name malarky is driving me round the bend!. (are Irish, living in Ireland)

Thanks a mill Grin

Darragh, spelt like that. I like it

AllieW · 29/01/2011 19:11

Darragh is lovely - reminds me of Dara O'Briain who's wonderful. Not overly keen on the others.

MotherMountainGoat · 29/01/2011 19:12

Yup, Darragh is lovely.

I think a fair number of people outside Ireland would assume Naoise is a girl's name.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 29/01/2011 19:15

Darragh for me, closely followed by Iarla.

Iarlaith is definitely my favourite, I love how it looks written down (but I think the Iarla spelling looks like a girls name).

I quite like Darragh and Tiernan. Not keen on Tallon (makes me think of an eagle's claw).

To be honest I would have thought the others were girls names Blush, so I don't personally like them for a boy.

Iarla is lovely. Iarlaith does look great written down. Is it a rare name, I've not heard of it in either form.

Lucyintheskywithdiazepam · 29/01/2011 19:23

I like Darragh.

All the others are awful.

I am Irish and I've never heard Rian, Tallon or Iarla/Iarlaith (quite like Jarlaith though).

BarbieLovesKen · 29/01/2011 19:25

Oooh thanks so much for the replies - comments are really helping. It looks like Darragh is a front runner (unless Iarlaith catches up??). Am shocked that Iarlaith is actually getting good feedback - didnt expect it to go down well here (after I had posted before - really depends on the night) and am delighted as I love it.

BluddyMoFo I thought Malachy/ Malachi was an Irish name too??! Confused

MotherMountainGoat Grin most people in Ireland think Naoise is a girl's name too Grin. Dh says no way to this as he thinks it too feminine so dont really know why I added it to list, just cant let it go Wink

Malachy is the Irish name, Malachi is the Hebrew one. Don't know if they have the same meaning or not.

BarbieLovesKen · 29/01/2011 19:27

Lucy I hadnt heard of Tallon either (until today when looking up Irish boy's names Smile). Your right though - Jarlaith/ Jarlath is the angliscised (sp?) version of Iarlaith (which means little prince) (and I hate the name Jarlath, funnily enough).

Rían means little king.

We have a Malachy in our family (nephew) and when I first heard it I wasn't keen, but now I love it.

Being English with an Irish husband, we have a Rory and a Niall, both kings of Ireland. However, living in the middle east, Niall is quite often mistaken for a Nile and people ask me if he is named after the river!

Anyway, I digress, surely out of all those names there is one or the other that YOU like!

ecobatty · 29/01/2011 19:45

I like Rian and Tiernan

tomatoesontoast · 29/01/2011 20:26

another vote for Darragh/Daire

IAmTheCookieMonster · 29/01/2011 20:29

MIL is desperate for a grandson called Malachy! We gave her a Ronan.

cloudydays · 29/01/2011 20:31

I love Darragh but if you're living in Ireland it's probably the most commonly used of all of them (not that it matters if it doesn't matter to you).

I'm not keen on Tiernan or Tallon but I love the rest from your list.

My favourite (tied with Darragh but with more originality points!) would be Naoise.

BarbieLovesKen · 29/01/2011 20:35

I dont like Malachy personally if Im honest.

TubbyDuffs our favourites are probably Iarlaith and Rían (we both actually agree we like them Shock). I think we'll probably end up going with one of these. That said, Darragh is lovely - has such a nice sound its just its a little "ordinary" around here - theres alot of Darraghs (for a reason, I suppose) whereas Iarlaith and Rían are old Irish and not commonly used. Not sure that should be a decider though. Think this thread will play a large part in end decision (sad, I know).

Cookiemonster love Ronan but have a close family member called this so wouldnt use it Sad.

Thanks all (keep 'em coming)

7 for Daire/ Darragh
2 for Iarlaigh
1 for Rían
1 for Tiernan

I love Iarlaith, I know 2 little boys called Darragh.

tomatoesontoast · 29/01/2011 21:37

if it's between Rian and Iarlaith for you, I'd go for Iarlaith
