BarbieLovesKen · 29/01/2011 19:09

Here's the shortlist of baby names I'm considering that I generated with Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder. Let me know what you think.

Boys
Darragh (possibly spelt Daire, prounounced Dar - a)
Iarla (more than likely spelt Iarlaith, prounounced Ear-la)
Naoise (prounounced Nee-sha)
Rían (Pronounced Ree-ann)
Tallon
Tiernan

Girls
Kate (we're definate on this)

Will you all please just pick one for us. This boy's name malarky is driving me round the bend!. (are Irish, living in Ireland)

Thanks a mill Grin

Like Darragh... Would suggest avoiding Rian if only for difficulty for those of us who don't know the typecode for the fada...

BarbieLovesKen · 29/01/2011 22:43

Thanks Tallulah and Tomatoe

Actually DesertOrchid we really do love Rían but fear the fada will be lost, as I explained on another thread, we already have an Oisín and everyone (including close family members) omit the fada so basically turn Ush-een into Ush-in. Drives me mad. That said, someone on here did wisely point out that it doesnt matter so much with Oisín (although Im still militant) as what else could it be?

There is the fear that try as I might, the fada on Rían will be too difficult to enforce and Rían will turn into Ryan (which despite being a perfectly lovely name is not to our personal taste). Am rambling.. does that make sense though?

I love Dara, any spelling.

My nephew is Kiernan, very nice, and unusual name.

BelligerentGhoul · 29/01/2011 22:48

I like Rian.

mathanxiety · 29/01/2011 23:00

You don't need a fada in Rian - the vowel combination IA never has a fada. The I is always long when followed by A as in IA. Same with the U in UA. (From my trusty Collins Pocket Irish Dictionary) I don't think Rian would turn into Ryan; I still wouldn't put a fada there as a preventative measure. (I need an Irish Language Pedants' Corner).

I love Darragh or Dara and also Naoise and Iarla/Iarlaith.

Would you consider Ruadhán?

Kate is lovely.

BarbieLovesKen · 29/01/2011 23:01

So far:

9 for Daire/ Darragh
3 for Iarlaigh
2 for Rían
1 for Tiernan

Annonious Kiernan is nice, cant help thinking though that people will think its mispelt Ciaran/ Kieran or mix or Kieran and Tiernan...

Thanks mathanxiety Smile ooh really regarding the fada? definately didnt know I is long when followed by A Blush. I spotted this name on a forum actually and it had the fada so sheep that I am just went with it Grin (should really know better!!)

Glad you like Kate.

Dont like Ruadhán to be honest and DH is never going to allow Naoise (and part of this is because of the massive amount of people using Naoise as a girls name so branding it female when its not Angry). If you had to pick between Iarlaith and Darrage which would you go with?

Tiernan

cloudydays · 29/01/2011 23:32

Hey Barbie you forgot my vote for Naoise!! :)

cloudydays · 29/01/2011 23:35

But I really like Rian too if that's the way you're leaning.

chipmonkey · 30/01/2011 00:06

chipmonkey votes Rian!Grin

Surely no-one would pronounce it Ryan? There are a lot of Cians and I don't think I have ever heard it pronounced Kyan!

The first time I ever heard the name Naoise was in school, reading a story about a boy called Naoise and I can't remember what it was about except that it had something to do with black and white pebblesConfused but I have never yet met a male Naoise and have met several female ones so although I know where you're coming from, I can see where your dh is coming from too.

chipmonkey · 30/01/2011 00:09

Also, Barbie, I know you've had a lot of votes for Darragh but this is a UK board and IMO Darragh in Ireland is like Jack in the UK, lovely name but so many of them!
( I do say that as the owner of a Harry, btw, I love it, but they are ten a penny. Or ten a cent)

mathanxiety · 30/01/2011 01:06

Naoise was the suitor of Deirdre, daughter of Conchobar, king of Ulster. They eloped and eventually Conchobar succeeded in having Naoise killed, and then Deirdre died of grief. Ah those were the days....

SecretNutellaFix · 30/01/2011 01:10

Love Tiernan

Lovecat · 30/01/2011 01:19

I like Darragh and Rían

Hate, hate, hate Tiernan - it's a surname, isn't it? (I know it is, I went to school with a guy called SomethingI'mnotgoingtosayforfearoflibel Tiernan who was rather up himself and unpleasant, hence dislike of name...) I really dislike surnames as first names.

Similary I hate Mal (whether achi or achy) because I used to work with a complete arsehole called Malachy. He hated his name, btw...

Kate is fab (mother of a Caitlin:))

ascouser · 30/01/2011 01:55

Fredfred · 30/01/2011 09:34

takethatlady · 30/01/2011 09:48

Tiernan is my fave :)

ValiumSandwichTime · 30/01/2011 13:22

I like Daragh and Ruadhan as well. Not to keen on Iarla or rian or Naoise.

Does Daragh need two Rs Mathanxiety!? This looks wrong to me, but what do i know?. I didn't go to a gaelscoil and I'm not good at Irish.

Tallon is terrible.

RueLaChesty · 31/01/2011 11:41

I vote Darragh

we liked Cillian/Killian for a ds?
