I really dont want to offend anyone but I am really conscious that sometimes people make assumptions about children just based on their names. Absolute honesty what are your thoughts on Joshua please??

Just a normal name. Same sort of name as Charlie, Dylan, Lewis. As in, been popular for a while but doesn't feel particularly classic.

cece · 25/01/2011 22:32

Just a nice normal name. Good nn of Josh. I would use it - good for a child and a man imo.

thelennox · 25/01/2011 22:33

I like Joshua, but have never really liked Josh, iyswim. I have 2ds and both their names can shorten, but I liked both long and short versions. However, Joshua has often been on my shortlist. I like it.x

Pippaandpolly · 25/01/2011 22:34

Every Josh I've ever known has had ADHD. Which is bizarre and clearly not a result of being called Josh! All nice boys. I'm a teacher so I can't help but associate names with kids I've taught.

PlanetLizard · 25/01/2011 22:40

I like it.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 26/01/2011 10:56

Pippa that is really strange as DS only has one friend named Josh and guess what condition Josh has got.

rachel234 · 26/01/2011 10:58

Personally I don't like the name Josh or Joshua.

But I don't base my opinions on a a person's name but on their character.

mopsyflopsy · 26/01/2011 11:06

Not sure what 'assumptions' one could make about someone called 'Joshua' (or any other name for that matter) Hmm.

Personally I dislike the name Joshua and would never choose it myself. But that wouldn't stop me liking a lovely person by that name Smile.

mandy1978 · 26/01/2011 11:41

i like it, its a lovely name which he will never feel resentful for having. boys i believe are better off with 'normal' names.. he will never be held back by this, it will suit as a child, if he becomes a dr or if he goes down the pub as a teen wit mates!

which in my opinion is what a name should do

poppydaisy · 26/01/2011 13:00

Don't really like the sound of Josh or Joshua but I've met lovely as well as less lovely Joshuas in my life Smile.

I actually think a name should identify a person or thing as uniquely as possible and people tend to 'grow' into any name imo.

Expecting06112010 · 26/01/2011 13:11

Im not to keen i think its a weak name

PfftTheMagicDragon · 26/01/2011 13:12

Nice name, too popular for me.

solo · 26/01/2011 13:19

It's a good name IMO.
I have a Joshua and it suits him. I chose it because I didn't mind the shortened version, but he didn't like being called Josh until he went to secondary school (he's year 8 now).

He went through a long stage of wanting to change his name to Matthew or Joe, though he's not said it for a while now. He'll probably always be Joshua to me. I don't seem able to call him Josh Grin.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 26/01/2011 13:24

I think it's a lovely name and would have used it if it wasn't so commonly used where I live.

rachel1970 · 26/01/2011 14:53

Personally I don't like Joshua. I just don't like the sound of it. But I hope I wouldn't pre-judge someone just for being called Joshua (or any other name)Hmm

MelinaM · 26/01/2011 16:31

I really don't like this name at all, I know a fair few Joshua's and Josh just sounds very American to me! ..sorry! x

evamummy · 26/01/2011 17:25

I don't like Joshua or Josh/Joshi at all, I'm afraid. It sounds very feminine to my ears, perhaps because of the -a ending.

Bucharest · 26/01/2011 17:32

I don't like it at all.
In fact, it's probably my all time least favourite boys name.
I can't even tell you why, it's irrational. Except maybe the sh sh sh -ness of it.
Strangely I don't mind Josh as much as Joshua, so it must be the sh-uw-a bit I loathe.

Minione · 26/01/2011 17:37

As names go its fine, however I am a teacher and have taught many Joshes over the past ten years. Unfortunately, many have been difficult and troubled so I don't really have positve connotations. The same with Connor and Jake (although I do teach lads called this at the moment who are both lovely!)

However, if I wasn't a teacher I'm sure I'd just think it was a nice enough name!

DilysPrice · 26/01/2011 17:39

I like it, but for some reason I think of Josh as a bit Hooray, dunno why.

SirBoobAlot · 26/01/2011 17:40

Really dislike it.

And it sounds very common, sorry .

Hulababy · 26/01/2011 17:41

I like Joshua. I m less keen on Josh. It is very popular around here if that bothers you. I know children from a range of backgrounds with the name so no obvious assumptions jumping out.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 27/01/2011 19:25

Knew there is a boy in YR1 at DS school who is supposed to be the worse behaved child they have ever had in the school, if you believe playground gossip that is.

Heard the teacher telling him off yesterday and guess what his name is.

MelinaM · 27/01/2011 19:32

..I also think it sounds rather effeminate! x

MumGoneCrazy · 27/01/2011 19:36

My DS (10) is Joshua but the whole family call him Josh, I only call him Joshua when he's in trouble Grin

He's a cheeky chappy kid but not naughty although we did have a few rough patches but very much doubt that it's connected to his name.
