Needing a bit of external advice on possible names for DS2 please. I'm english but DH is algerian of Kabyle (Berber) origin. I've got quite an unusual name and always wanted to give my children unusual names so was happy to agree to give our DS1 a Kabyle name - he is Anir which means Angel (born 31 Dec) - but with an english middle name.

Just found out by scan that am expecting another boy and i'm really stumped, can't find anything i like.

Tell me what you think about my favourite - Maziz - shorten to Maz, does that sound a bit odd? (Means my darling son)

Other options are
Ali - works anywhere i think but boring?
Sami - quite common
Samir - sounds weird with Anir no?

Help with any other suggestions gratefully accepted...

I like Maziz best. Maz - why odd? To English ears, close to Max.

I do know a female Maz (Marilyn).

mathanxiety · 24/01/2011 06:43

Maziz is beautiful.

mamaloco · 24/01/2011 06:48

I knew a Nassim and a Selim.
I like Selim and he was a really nice guy too, not too common.

gorionine · 24/01/2011 06:51

Is Yanis a Berber name ? DH is Berber from Algeria and I seem to remember a friend or cousin called Yanis.

mamaloco · 24/01/2011 07:12

Yanis is hebrew.

SofiaAmes · 24/01/2011 07:13

maziz is lovely

ValiumSilverTongue · 24/01/2011 08:42

Maziz is the only one I like on your list.

Yanis as suggested by Gorionine is nice too, is that the right language?

the others sound a bit vague to me. I am not familiar with these sounds/names but Maziz and Yanis I would remember easily.

Samir would have worked welll IF your first child wasn't Anir. Samir and Anir.... no.

NewImprovedJollster · 24/01/2011 09:29

Maziz is lovely (and what a gorgeous meaning).
Goes really well with Anir.
Congrats.

hulabula · 24/01/2011 09:50

Maziz is really nice and I like the meaning. I also like Samir but it is probably too close to Anir.

PlanetLizard · 24/01/2011 09:54

I like all your suggestions :)

mayanna123 · 24/01/2011 09:55

Lovely names, I particularly like Maziz.

gorionine · 24/01/2011 11:00

Valium, I will check with Dh wjhen he comes back. starting to wonder if I have not made a variation on Younes maybe?

Purplebuns · 24/01/2011 11:05

Karim? I also know an adult male called Adele from Algeria.

MissQue · 24/01/2011 11:09

Maziz is a nice name Smile

gorionine · 24/01/2011 11:17

Ok, Just had DH on the phone and he confirms he know a Yanis from his village, He has no idea if the name is actually a Berber one or was imported.

gorionine · 24/01/2011 11:19

If you are after Algerian (Arabic) names rather than Berber I know to many to list. Will try to post some later but have to go now.Smile

mathanxiety · 24/01/2011 14:53

Does Yanis sound like Janice?

Bue · 24/01/2011 15:17

Maziz is lovely! Maz is a cute nickname too.

Firawla · 24/01/2011 15:45

Maziz sounds lovely, your other 3 suggestions are a bit more boring I think (nice but common names), Maziz is a bit different never come across one, i think its really nice

gorionine · 24/01/2011 16:38

Yes Mathanxiety exept the Y obviously, TBH one never made me think of the other.

Minione · 24/01/2011 20:50

Maziz is lovely and Maz is a cool nickname (its mine!)

CockneySparra · 24/01/2011 21:33

Maziz is gorgeous, and Maz is a very cool NN.

timetosmile · 24/01/2011 21:40

Some lovely names.
As long as you choose a name which is spelled/said phonetically (and not too long) it will work well in any culture.
You sound like you are really celebrating their rich cultural background

Bumbleconfusus · 24/01/2011 22:54

Maziz is very good... I love Berber boy names, I need to have about 4 boys to use up all the berber boys names I like... Selim is very good too (someone mentioned)... you could try more traditional names (like old kings etc of the area). I think Yanis is super-cute (pronounced Yan-nee I think). Any good names from family members who have passed away (as seems to be traditional)?

hazbaz · 26/01/2011 23:07

Wow thanks for the vote for Maziz everyone!!

My husband has about 3/4 friends called Salim / Selim so it seems very common for me and he has a nephew Nassim which i like and a brother karim!

For some reason i just don't like Yanis...think i need to persaud my DH round to Maziz then.

PS sorry for late reply...my SIL just had twins - now has 3 under 2.4!!!
