Sigh-Anne.

I thought the woman was mispronouncing Sian, then saw the name written down. Sigh-Anne. I mean, what on earth...?

the other was a little boy called Ragen. As in Ronald Regan, but Ragen. Ragen? I am not a name snob, but I do draw the line at deliberately misspelling surnames and then using them as a first name! Grin

Even the most innocent of names can carry trouble for the child due to unthinking or cruel but think they're funny parents! Having taught for over 30 years the prize winners were definately Mr and Mrs Cotton calling their daughter Polly Esther, and Michael Hunt which is fine until abbreviated to Mike...I kid you not!!!

lololizzy · 27/01/2011 21:32

i know a Mike Hunt (my father's friend) and always used to snigger as a teenager, when my mum would ask who was on the phone 'oh it's Mike Hunt' my dad would say...

fiandems · 27/01/2011 21:40

I was once in a high st chain store and heard someone shout for a Kenzo, the little chap was running wild...

At college there was a Chinese girl in my biology class who was called Vagina. The story went that she wanted to be called Virginia, but got it wrong on her paperwork and it was only when someone at the college pointed it out she realised her mistake.

Another girl at college was called Charmaine Rainbird which I always thought was quite pretty.

About 10 years ago looking the announcements in the paper I came across a new baby girl called Panda(I always hoped it could have been a typo for Pandora)

fiandems · 27/01/2011 21:41

Ohh and there was a Gail Forse in my English class at school, still makes me chuckle Smile

Alwaysworthchecking · 27/01/2011 21:42

My dad once had a work colleague named Fakoffo. (Try saying it out loud.) Perfectly normal where we lived then (Pacific island), but my dad always had trouble saying it. When at work he always carried a 2-way radio. Sometimes a voice would come over, calling, 'Fakoffo! Fakoffo! Fakoffo!' It was as if my dad's waistband had developed sudden-onset Tourettes.

In Kenya my parents knew a man called Bonaventureofgod. Lovely name, if a little unusual.

I once met a woman called 'Merrily'.

Friend of mine once worked with a guy called Mustafa Shittu. Worked perfectly well for him in his home country. Slightly more problematic when he travelled to the UK.

lololizzy · 27/01/2011 21:42

These are hysterical. I know a Kerry Perry and my mum went to school with Douglas Douglas.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 27/01/2011 21:46

I know someone who's called her son Buzz.

Was looking up the Phoenix family on wikipedia after reading of the hippy family who called their girl Mermaid, and apparently the family surname was originaaly 'Bottom'. Joaquim Phoenix was born, Joaquim Bottom! (funnier if Joaquim's pronounced properly)

RustyBear · 27/01/2011 21:51

There's a girl named Velocity at DD's university.

And a friend of mine had a pair of twins in her first class (nearly 40 years ago now) called Ribena and Delrosa.

soccerwidow · 27/01/2011 21:52

On that vein lololizzy, I knew a Robert Robertson

I have recently come across Elliegance and Lorra (Laura).

These days you can never tell if the parent is just illiterate or has intended to give their child that spelling to be "different".

I am sure in some countries that they refuse to register children that do not have names spelt the standard way.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 27/01/2011 21:53

There is a little boy in DS's nursery called Wilder which I think is a wonderful name. If I was going to have DC6 it would deffo be on my list.

I know of birth parents who have named their children really horrid names because they knew they were going to be removed. Which is sad on so many different levels.

I met a lady called Ieline. Her dad was pissed when he went to register the birth. She was supposed to be called Eileen. Poor woman had lived with that for 60 years.

Meandacat · 27/01/2011 22:26

Sorry, can I just jump back to page 5 where manicbmc said "Also know of a Tiger, a Lord Grace (boy), a Blu, and an Ian." Um... what's so unusual about Ian?! Hmm

I knew a Beowulf and a Quasimo (both men) and went to school with a Xanthe (girl). DH worked with someone called Shittin.

I very much wanted to call DD Hero, but knew that most folk would think it odd/should be a boys name (it's not - Hero is a female heroine, ironically enough in greek mythology).

DitaVonCheese · 27/01/2011 22:27

Takver I believed that the name Ottilie was Otterley for years Blush and thought it very silly indeed. Now I know what it actually is, I love it.

I also love the name NorbertDentressangle Blush (though not for a DC, clearly). Love Loveday but DH not keen. DH is a Jethro btw Wink

A friend of mine taught a Bunny Wong. When friend got a rabbit, she named it Bunny Wong in honour of her student. Sadly Bunny Wong got eaten by a fox :(

One of my favourite names ever (another Chinese one) is Holly Moon Pie, who was at school with my cousins.

Pippaandpolly · 27/01/2011 22:37

Meandacat - Hero is also Shakespearean, from 'Much Ado About Nothing'. Lovely name, though she's a bit wet. If I named a DD after any Shakespearean character it would be Beatrice from the same play - I love her Grin.

Saddlebags · 28/01/2011 09:49

I heard of a Nancy-Ann Seancy (say it out loud).

TrudyVotion · 28/01/2011 09:51

I absolutely LOVE Hebe and wanted it for DD but DH said no child of his was being named after a shrub - my name's Heather >massive huff<

Margarine and Electricity are hilarious and the rest woeful. Loving this thread Grin

MonkeyandParrot · 28/01/2011 09:54

I went to school with a Ben Dover - the poor lad was teased all the way through.

And my Aunt named my nephew Hugo which is fine until its said in a broad Margate accent.

HappyAsASandboy · 28/01/2011 10:05

I don't know the girl, but I was told about a Le-a.

Not too bad you might think, but when pronouced as 'Leah', my friend was corrected - "Not 'Leah', its Ledasha. You pronouce the dash" Shock

Then again, I named my daughter Sarah. One of the reasons being that I wanted to avoid endless 'how do you spell that' questions. Virtually everyone has asked whether Sarah is spelt with or without an 'h'Sad

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 28/01/2011 10:36

Not totally sure if this is true, but I read about a couple living somewhere fairly remote (think it was a very rural bit of Italy if I remember right?) who had named their daughter after something they had read and thought it sounded pretty:

Salmonella Bacteria!

villanova · 28/01/2011 12:20

I know a Marley (m) and a Moss (f) in the same family. Not too many wacky ones at DSs school, but I did once meet a Robin Hood at the dole office, and I met a Chinese couple who named their boy Hoho - hope he's cheerful in later life.

zzzzoey · 28/01/2011 12:30

my dd's school friends are Qmunity, Holiday, Thobile, Ayanna and Bell. We know no children called Jane, Sarah, Cathy, Helen etc whatsoever. We are also friends with Hebe, Arlo, Cole, Nolly, Eren, Edan and Bonny-Bess. Lovely names all! I like a bit of variety...
but would draw the line at Salmonella!Shock

lololizzy · 28/01/2011 13:09

pronounce the dash??!!! who makes up their own rules about the english language??!

lololizzy · 28/01/2011 13:10

I know a Hecate which is obviously a rather heavy name for a small girl being the Dark Mother and all..but it's lovely and she carries it well (very quirky child)

ttalloo · 28/01/2011 13:37

A friend knows of a small, middle-class boy in South London called Sodapop. She also had a colleague who named his daughter Vivi Zahara.

And my DSis has a friend in the US whose daughter's called Sage.

lololizzy · 28/01/2011 13:55

i love Sodapop as it's from one of my alltime favourite films and books! (The Outsiders). In fact my cousin always wanted that name for a boy, but i think her rabbit got it instead
Grin

moodymama · 28/01/2011 13:57

I had to make a call to an Aurora-Orr, quite hard to say.
Also knew of a Hardick.

I know a Hebe and quite like it.

Vodafone is f'ing ridiculous.
