What do you think of the name Alice spelt as Alys?

Just that really.Is it pretentious? I just don't like the original spelling as much. Hubby grew up in Wales but not Welsh. Thoughts please.

I think it looks pretty but I would automatically pronounce it Alice, would probably think 'Alise' rather than Alice but it's a lovely name however you spell it.

Love it, but am biased as I have an Alice.

It looks like you can't spell. It looks like a lifetime of having to say "no, it's spelt A-L-T-S" and "no, it's pronounced 'Alice'".

I think if you're going to pronounce it Alice anyway then I'd just spell it that way.

It's lovely. I'm quite surprised that people wouldn't recognise it as an alternative spelling of Alys. It's not that uncommon is it?

I've known 2 Alys and 1 Alice though so am used to the spelling I suppose.

I think Alys is lovely - dd is named a variant of Alice too :) I knew an Alys, never thought it was odd or anything.

I wouldn't think it pretentious or odd. I think I prefer it to ALice too.

I think it looks like you have made the name up or think you are cool. I expect it would be pronounced allis.

So, when you see a name you don't recognise, do you always assume the parent has made it up to look cool?

Why use an alternative spelling? Why be awkward?

I know of a Alyce, Alys and Alice so I wouldn't think it odd at all.

I have spent most of my life spelling my name. It is really annoying and now I have to spell my surname all the time too.

Only if you live in Wales and are Welsh.

Alis is also a Welsh spelling of it.

There's a Welsh drama series called Alys beginning on Sunday on S4C. :)

Alys is a real spelling and I think it's lovely. I would consider it for my DC.
