Just that really. Is it pretentious? I just don't like the original spelling as much. Hubby grew up in Wales but not Welsh. Thoughts please.
Thanks

I have an Alice too, I personally pefer the normal spelling though.
Alice is a beautiful name, why mess with it?

SloganLogan · 24/06/2011 16:48

I like Alys and think it's a much nicer spelling than Alice. For Alys I think pretty name, Welsh connection. Alice I think is a bit dull.

RightUpMyRue · 24/06/2011 16:49

Daft.

JamesDean21 · 28/06/2014 00:06

Alys is an ancient welsh name from the 13-1400's made popular by our last true prince of Wales Owain Glyndwr! Thinking that because something has and English variant does not mean that is the correct way it's only been used there with any real frequency since the Victorian era so we kind of had a 400 yr head start there so I guess we'd claim the 'traditional' way of spelling it :).
Alys is pronounced in the same way as Alice is in English, to those who thought it would be Aleece it's actually quite funny as the the welsh language/alphabet I is pronounced e!
It's a beautiful name meaning noble and sweet but then again I am biased as I have a wonderful and sweet daughter named Alys Efa

Alice/ Alys -both lovely names.

Very rude to call the Welsh spelling "wanky" and made up.
Shows a bit of ignorance IMHO

Marcipex · 28/06/2014 11:55

I love it, traditional , pretty, and doesn't contain the word 'lice'.

Im amazed people think it's a made up name.

KoalaDownUnder · 28/06/2014 12:04

It's lovely, but if you're not living in Wales, Alice would probably be easier for her. And, to be honest, I like the look of Alice a bit better.

I'm still swooning that someone on here had a daughter called Anoushka. LOVE that name!

KoalaDownUnder · 28/06/2014 12:04

*has, not had!

Notso · 28/06/2014 12:52

I prefer the Alys spelling it seems closer to the pronunciation than Alice.

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/06/2014 13:54

Wow cultural awareness abound on this thread! Anything not English = wanky?

Lovely little englanders!

badtime · 28/06/2014 16:14

As other poster's have said, Alys was used in England in the Middle Ages, along with pretty much other spelling of the name you can imagine (as spelling had not been standardised).

Alice is not 'the traditional spelling' or 'the original spelling'. The original spelling would have been the French or German version (from Adelais or Adalhaidis). It may be 'the usual spelling in English', but that does not mean that other spellings are less valid.

I love it. My dd has Alice as a middle name and it's often been mis-spelt Alys - but then we're from Wales!

JumpingJackSprat · 30/06/2014 00:21

I believe Alys was also the norman spelling. It's far more beautiful than the bog standard Alice spelling.

Just because it's not commonly heard in England doesn't mean it's wrong. How do you lot cope with other non typically English names? OP, Alys is a gorgeous old name and at least she would be different. a lot of posters on mumsnet unfortunately don't like names out of the top 100 and will jump on anyone who suggest anything the slightest bit unusual. hence some of the replies you've had. It doesn't matter if you don't have a Welsh connection. Alys is a perfectly acceptable alternative spelling.

NinjaLeprechaun · 30/06/2014 01:21

Making a name hard to spell is stupid.
I have a traditional-but-not-common name, with the most common and traditional spelling, and I am constantly having to explain or correct the spelling for people.
My daughter is Megan. My thought when choosing that version - the traditional Welsh spelling - is that it was the easiest option, but it's apparently too difficult for some most people.

Maybe the stupid comes before the spelling, and it's not the person who actually has the name who's the problem.

Doitforme · 30/06/2014 01:34

Im confused. Wasn't this thread an old one from 2011? Im sure I posted on it under a different name.

xalyssx · 30/06/2014 02:02

I'm Alyss Smile

Doitforme · 30/06/2014 11:42

I live in Welsh speaking North Wales and the welsh spelling is the only way here for names especially for natives. When using the Welsh language on a day to day basis as it is here everywhere then it would be odd to hear a Welsh name pronounced in the English way.

stripedtortoise · 30/06/2014 13:38

If you're not going to be living in Wales then definitely not. Why be awkward? Why set your daughter up for that? Alice is a beautiful name by the way ;D

CoteDAzur · 30/06/2014 13:43

I'd think you can't spell and/or have gone out of your way to make life very difficult for your DD, all for the bizarre notion that you're bestowing originality and uniqueness on your offspring through the strange spelling of a normal name.

Doitforme · 30/06/2014 13:54

But its not a strange spelling of a "normal" name. Its the way we spell it here in Welsh speaking Wales.

Regardless this THREAD is 3 years old its a ZOMBIE and I doubt that the OP will be bothered now.

Really?! I thought it was annoying when people put an extra B in - I had no idea there were so many and I am one!

Also, I prefer Alice, but I am not Welsh and don't live in Wales...

EtsyObsessed · 02/07/2014 13:25

No, sorry Thanks

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 07/07/2014 08:58

Very commonly used in Wales, along with Alis.
