Iris - elegant/cool or old woman??

Would love your thoughts on the name Iris. Not pregnant but just musing - so I must be getting broody! We already have a Sophia (middle name Joy), so wanted something a bit quirkier for next time (assuming it's a girl - hypothetically).
Thanks!

It's old woman at the mo, but no doubt that will change!

Not sure it 'goes' with Sophia though- a lovely name btw. Perhaps have Iris as a middle name?

It was top of my shortlist for DC2.

Unfortunately it didn't suit him Grin

doricpatter · 19/01/2011 22:32

Love it.

Rhubarbgarden · 19/01/2011 22:33

Oh I love Iris! Dh vetoed. Bah.

Beamur · 19/01/2011 22:34

It was on my long list - I think its beautiful.

NewImprovedJollster · 19/01/2011 22:34

Love it.

Love Iris, also like Siri.
Had a colleague called Iris, she was from Hong Kong - Iris was her 'Western' name.

I only think it's nice as a Greek name.

There's something too fragile about it as a flower. I think an Iris would have to be willowy or it would be all wrong. And it makes me think of mothballs and rosewater.

babybear1983 · 19/01/2011 23:19

I love it, it was on my shortlist but DH vetoed it, booo!

MadAboutQuavers · 19/01/2011 23:25

Gorgeous

Teds77 · 19/01/2011 23:48

Gorgeous, beautiful, feminine without being too girly, unusual without being wacky, strong but soft (maybe as it's short and doesn't end in an 'a'), brilliant, lovely etc. etc. I think it's great!

RoundAndAround · 19/01/2011 23:53

Deffo cool

pippibluestocking · 20/01/2011 00:01

Cool - considered it for dd2

LetThereBeRock · 20/01/2011 00:05

Hideous. Not at all cool imho, and all I can picture when I hear it is a giant eyeball on legs. And yes I am weird.

mathanxiety · 20/01/2011 02:18

I like Ines better.

sparkleandspin · 20/01/2011 07:54

I like it. It was on my list for DD1 but my DH said it made him think of eyeballs and my Dad said it was frumpy and he would put it in the same category as Maud and Mildred (although I know these have made a comeback too).

tummytickler · 20/01/2011 08:21

I love it - my 10 year old dd is called Iris.
I think it is elegant and sophisticated, and it really suits her. She really likes her name as well, which is a bonus.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/01/2011 08:25

VVV popular at the moment where we live! SW London

PlanetLizard · 20/01/2011 08:27

I don't like it, sorry.

diddl · 20/01/2011 08:30

Old lady.

Edmundo · 20/01/2011 09:41

I prefer other flower names like Lily. Much prettier.

Edmundo · 20/01/2011 09:41

I think it's on the rise popularity wise, I know of a few born recently so I think it's generally well liked.

mamacorner · 20/01/2011 09:48

It's the current name of choice from my two DC's ( aged 10 & 11) for their expected baby sis, greek goddess of the rainbow...they're big Percy Jackson fans, and so ( for them) anything greek god related is cool at the mo.
Beautiful name, I think.

slowshow · 20/01/2011 10:19
