One of my friends has just found out she is expecting identical twins. The gender will be found out at the next scan hopefully.
Does anyone have any nice suggestions?

I would go for names that start with different letters, have a different number of syllables and do not rhyme.

countydurhamlass · 19/01/2011 21:16

i agree jojo, i would however keep them either both very traditional or both unique, rather than having one with a traditional name like Sophie or Peter and one with a name like Brook or Paris.

onimolap · 19/01/2011 21:24

Paris would be much better with something like Hector or Lysander. I think you'd get away with a Greek myth pairing like that, but would be wary of more modern ones (like Henry and Peter, or Thomas plus any other engine, or Rachel and Kirsty).

I agree that it is better to have separate initials and names that aren't matchy-matchy.

EvilTwins · 19/01/2011 21:27

Just choose two names that you like. I have ID twins, and their names are not in any way matching. We didn't even consider it. We know a fair few twins as well, and no one does matchy names - eek.

JojoMags has it right.

PlanetLizard · 20/01/2011 09:07

What sort of names would your friend like? Traditional, unusual, short, long, trendy, Biblical? Would be good to have something to go on.

Psammead · 20/01/2011 09:26

Alice and Lucy

Abigail and Penelope

James and Alexander

Patrick and Rory

Those are names I like and think fit together without being too cutesy.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 20/01/2011 10:58

The advice given to a friend who had identical boys was the older one got the shorter name closest to the end of the alphabet. Not sure why, I think it was due to people possibly making a fuss about the eldest.

Psammead · 20/01/2011 11:10

Probably so the younger would be the first in somwthing, if only alphabetically.

onimolap · 20/01/2011 11:49

I've been trying to think if nice pairings, that aren't too matchy. How about Royal names:

Alexandra and Mary, Katharine and Anne, Elizabeth and Charlotte, Isabella and Elinor: James and Alexander, George and Charles, Richard and William.

Or saints and the Bible:

Martha and Helen, Jemima and Mary, Susannah and Tabitha, Eve and Keziah: Peter and Timothy, Paul and Nathan, Daniel and James, Samuel and Joshua.

OddBodd · 20/01/2011 15:16

Katherine, Elizabeth, Abigail.

Edward, Alexander, Thomas.

I agree with no mathchin initials. I think I like Katherine and Elizabeth together best and for boys I like Alexander and Thomas best.

SilkStalkings · 20/01/2011 17:13

I've always fantasized about having twin girls called Linnet & Wren. Probably a good job it never happenedSmile.

How about Rufus and Duncan for boys? They're both colour names but not obviously so.

readytobeamum · 20/01/2011 17:39

twins who i used to go to school with...

Maddie and Grace

April and Kirsty

Amy and Lauren

I like the name maddie and grace I think they fit well together :-)

harrygracejessica · 20/01/2011 19:40

We just went with names we liked for ours - we have a Grace and Jessica who are 2 and expecting a set of boys in a few weeks and think we have decided on Elliot and Oliver

readytobeamum · 20/01/2011 19:53

wow two sets of twins! bit of a handful :-s

BuntyPenfold · 21/01/2011 10:13

Wow 2 sets of twins Envy

mamadiva · 21/01/2011 10:30

Twins I know-
Jaimee and Teigan
Cara and Ailey
David and Gary
James and Thomaas
Ruraidh and Ewan

There is also an Isla and Sky at DS' school which is a bit cringeworthy when you hear mum shouting Isla Sky come here...

littlemissm · 21/01/2011 11:07

I have a Ebony & Baylee.Smile

Hatterbox · 21/01/2011 12:25

I want to echo that the names should have different initial letters and not rhyme. Oh and it goes without saying, twin names should never be almost the same name, for example I know a twin set of Tyler and Taylor, and that is just plain wrong.

I'm a twin with twins.

I've got a non-identical twin sister and we're Harriet (me) and Violet. (We're named after our dad's grandmothers).

I have identical twin daughters, Eleonora and Dorothea.

Other nice 'same sex' twin sets I know:

Alexander & William
Alexander & Nathaniel
Caspar & Sebsastian
Elijah & Reuben
Thomas & William

Catherine & Eleanor
Elizabeth & Margaret
Lucy & Sarah
Miranda & Tabitha

schmee · 21/01/2011 19:14

One tip is to make the names about the same length/simplicity - useful when they are learning to say/read/write their names.

EvilTwins · 21/01/2011 19:37

schmee - do you have twins? That's a bizarre suggestion.

I know twin boys called Versace and Armani (could also be used for girls_ However I would nEVER Suggest this, its only to make your friend laugh as you can be so tied carrying twins and need a wee laugh. Also when I was a practicing Midwife (I am doing a different job now) I answered the phone in the labour ward to a delighted granparent of twins a by and a girl and she asked me if I could tell her if they were identical!!!! as she lived a distance away and wouldn't be able to make it to the hospital for a couple of days,It was only when I laughed she realised what she had asked, both of these stories are geniunely true.Best wishes to your friend fo a healthy pregnancy, safe delivery and two healthy babies.Karen x

LargeGlassofRed · 21/01/2011 20:27

I have Freddie and Stanley

and I know

Max and George
Erin and Freya
Alex and Ethan

I think its the same as picking any siblings names, nice to go together but not to alike.

Highlandgirl · 22/01/2011 11:48

What schmee said...it's a brilliant point. Twins will be learning to read and write their own names at the same time. Smile

Friends with twins have all suggested this...you don't want one twin to feel like 'it's' being left behind because their is harder to spell!

onimolap · 22/01/2011 11:52

I suppose you could try May and Amy?

I think in terms of differing length/complexity, there is something to be said for avoiding extremes - it might be weird to have Vercingetorix and Joe.
