Really love Cameron as either a middle or first name for our baby if it's a boy but it according to the mumsnet babyname finder it's common and council estates were mention Confused

It's my gran's middle name (she's scottish and was her mother's maiden name- scottish tradition apparently) and it would mean alot to her if the baby had Cameron in there somewhere as DD has a family name for a middle name from my other grandparents.

The common factor doesn't bother me exactly (we're not exactly posh) but don't really want by as yet unborn baby being written off as a chav. Or it being assumed that I vote Tory (I'm not a tory hater or supporter but my dad will take the piss as it is).

I know two Camerons - one lives in London & parents are manager at accounting firm and human rights barrister. The other one lives in Monaco, and has a very wealthy family.

So no, I wouldn't associate the name with "chav".

onimolap · 18/01/2011 17:59

I think of it as also a girls' name (eg Diaz) - are you OK with unisex?

I think the David association is fairly inevitable - for now at least.

goodkarmaisrunninglate · 18/01/2011 18:06

Know of several Camerons. All chavs, sorry!

mangoandlime · 18/01/2011 18:07

I only know one, a very respectable family they are as well. Not a hint of chavtastic about them.

NightFury · 18/01/2011 18:19

I know a young Cameron (3 yo). His favourite music is Handel's Messiah. He and his family are definitely not common.

anonymosity · 18/01/2011 18:34

NIghtfury I think I may know the same Cameron!

That aside, I have always thought it suits a girl better.

pissedrightoff · 18/01/2011 18:38

I have a girl named Cameron. I don't feel it is a chav name at all (of course) just a lovely Scottish name.

Lots of boys named Cameron here in Scotland.

talkingnonsense · 18/01/2011 18:42

And it is an anagrams of romance! I love it.

perpetuallypregnant · 18/01/2011 18:45

My son (14) is Cameron. We are not in the slightest bit chavvy :)

I only know of one other and he isn't a Chav either.

I still love the name and he's never had a bad comment about it.

usualsuspect · 18/01/2011 18:46

I love it, I know one ...hes not a chav

hate that bloody word

BikeRunSki · 18/01/2011 18:47

David is first thing that springs to min.

Then chav.

Went to school with a Kamaran.

It clearly spans the social spectrum!

Beamur · 18/01/2011 18:49

Its my DSS middle name, but the David PM connection would poison it for me at the moment! Shame really as its a fine name.

LillianGish · 18/01/2011 18:54

Not Chavvy, but agree with Beamur re david connections. Hopefully they won't last forever though Grin

orienteerer · 18/01/2011 18:56

We have a Cameron (boy aged about 12) in our extended family. Completely un-chav, his Father is a Hamish.

pissedrightoff · 18/01/2011 20:16

talkingnonsense I never thought of that, fantastic.

CupcakesHay · 18/01/2011 20:22

the 2 camerons I know are either posh, or come from uper-middle class family.

if you like the name, go for it.

Goingspare · 18/01/2011 20:22

I know a couple of very middle-class Camerons. Would have a problem with the David connection too, but as LillianGish says, he'll be ancient history before too long.

pointydug · 18/01/2011 20:41

Might depdns where you live. There are none of those connoations in my neck of the woods.

meala · 18/01/2011 20:48

Apparently meaning of Cameron is crooked nose Grin

usualsuspect · 18/01/2011 20:49

The Cameron I know lives on a council estate ...hes not a chav though

said · 18/01/2011 20:56

If it's a family name, you could hide it as a middle name somewhere.

usualsuspect · 18/01/2011 21:02

Normal people live on council estates believe it or not

PracticallyImperfectInEveryWay · 18/01/2011 23:31

I like it, I don't know any so don't have any prejudice about chav or posh at all. David and associated connotations will be gone by the time he grows up.

BrokenRing · 19/01/2011 12:03

After what he's doing to this country, no-one is ever going to forget David Cameron by the time a child born this year grows up: they'll be living with all Cameron's broken promises and student debt etc. So, it's a shame because the name itself is fine, but I wouldn't go near it now.

I have known Camerons from a variety of social 'levels' - it doesn't have an automatic posh/'chav' connotation, I don't think.

saffy85 · 21/01/2011 07:08

That's settled then I feel much better Smile

Like I say we're not posh at all but don't like the idea of my child being automatically written off as a chav based solely on his name.

I love the anagram- I never realised but then I'm crap at things like that Grin I don't mind the meaning but then my nose has been broken several times so is anything but straight Blush

And Kameron/Kamarans don't count- it really riles me when people don't spell a name properly on purpose.
