Were you named for a relative?,a celebrity?,a character from a novel? or did your parents just like the sound of the name?

Relative, father, grandfather, greatgrandfather, great great grandfather..... can you see a pattern?
My DH is named after his uncle. This was the sole basis for not naming DD after a relative.

Great aunt. Sad

So I've been saddled with a fuddy name - I've never met anyone else with my name.

morethanyoubargainfor · 11/01/2011 12:40

i was named after a song from my dad's favourite singer at the time and my middle name wa my mum's choice!

loler · 11/01/2011 13:02

I was born in Cyprus (Dad in RAF), I was named after the next door neighbour - well her nickname.

Have also never met anyone with the same name as me - Greek Cypriot NN! (Although I do know of someone called after me)

Tuschinski · 11/01/2011 13:09

They just liked it, Lord knows why!

twirlymum · 11/01/2011 13:12

I was named after a place in Ireland, that has family connections.

EdnaTheInebriateWoman · 11/01/2011 13:17

DMum chose for older sis. DDad got to choose for me (thank God he did - my mum's choice for me was awful). I got a grand queenly name (not Elizabeth).

mamaloco · 11/01/2011 13:19

that was the name of my mums first doll Hmm so I guess she always liked the name Confused.
If I had followed her trend DD1 would have been "booboo" and DD2 "Tiny" Grin

My Mum was a coronation baby, so - Elizabeth; my father's middle name was that of his father.

My brother was named after a revolutionary educator and philosopher; my sister they just liked the name; with me they just liked the name.

My partner was named after nobody in particular, but his middle name is that of his father and grandfather.

Named after my grandmother - first name and her maiden surname as my middle name (old Scottish tradition).

I often need to explain it (and tend not to use it)as most people think I have a hyphenated surname.

mathanxiety · 11/01/2011 15:02

I was supposed to be a boy and my parents had only chosen a boy's name for me. An aunt marched into the hospital and cut through the dithering with her suggestion of another aunt's name and middle name. It was quite appropriate as I was born on or around the feast day of the saint of this name. I ended up using the Irish version (very 60s Ireland). I'm very grateful to my aunt, as mum's instincts where names are concerned are a bit 'off'. (Roberta, Stacey?)

Secretwishescometrue · 11/01/2011 15:24

My mother loved princess grace so called me and my older sister the same names as she called her girls and was going to call my little sister Grace but went with a family name instead. My brothers are named after family. My mil picked between our two favourites for ds1 and had a dream when I was only a few weeks pg with ds2 that he would be a boy and what his name was... If I ever get to have another baby I think I shall have my own "dream" before anyone else Grin

TheManWhoSoldtheWorld · 11/01/2011 16:10

My dad got to choose my name and my Mum my middle name - I hate my name.

NannyState · 11/01/2011 16:27

Very trad Irish names. Our parents were big on culture/roots/heritage.

OddBodd · 11/01/2011 16:31

Named after a ginger cat my mum had that died when she was a teenager. I guess after 3 kids you start to run out of names you both agree on!

Deciduousblonde · 11/01/2011 16:55

My mother appears to have amnesia because she has given me too reasons for my name.

  1. She saw it in a recipe section of 'Womans Own'

  2. It was the main character in a novel

My dad, however has told me that I was nameless after I was born, and another woman on the ward had 'my' name, so he picked it.

They are divorced and never speak, so I am not going to challenge them on the subject Wink

Deciduousblonde · 11/01/2011 16:55

Two reasons Blush

DastardlyandSmugly · 11/01/2011 17:01

I am named after the wife of Buddy Holly (but with a slight changed). My dad chose it even though Buddy Holly was not his favourite singer. I have no idea why.

My brother was named because they liked the names. Although he was nearly saddled with Garth.

DS's first name is a name I liked because of an 80s TV programme and DH liked it. His middle name is the name of a footballer from 1930s who was DH's grandfathers' fave and is the nickname of DH's dad.

DD was named after a character in the Maltese Falcon as DH was spending a lot of time in San Francisco when I was pregnant with her. Her middle name is my mum's name as my mum died in 1988, almost 20 years to the day that DD was born.

Sarsaparilllla · 11/01/2011 18:03

I was due to be called Kimberley, apparently when I was born they looked at me and thought nope it didn't suit, so they named me after my aunty instead but changed the spelling slightly

wuggglemump · 11/01/2011 18:06

I'm named after my Mum's best friend at Uni.
My middle name is the name my biological Mum gave me. (I'm adopted)
DD's middle name is the name of my best friend at Uni.

Goldberry · 11/01/2011 18:15

I was named after my Grandfather (unusually for a girl!), who died before I was born. It's a name which can be male or female, but is spelt differently according to gender.

Fenugreek · 11/01/2011 18:38

I was going to have a pretty, interesting name. Then when I was born they thought "what if she grows up to be ugly? Or fat? Or really dull and mousey? We'd better give her a really unremarkable name so she can fade into the background"

True story.

Thanks Mum and Dad. You really had faith in me from day one.

looblylu · 11/01/2011 18:46

My parents let my sister name me (she was 7)
and she decided to name me after her favourite character on Neighbours Hmm

She did insist when we got older that she named me after the company that made the bin that was in the Maternity ward since thats where she wanted to put me...

The joy of siblings!
