Were you named for a relative?,a celebrity?,a character from a novel? or did your parents just like the sound of the name?

I agree with spaceangel - must be a lot of people out there called "Gramps" or "Nan" ! Been scratching my head over some of these - Hackneyangel - if your DB and you are Scottish islands, is he Ross and you are Cromarty? The lad named after a brand of child's vest . . . is it Mark? Or Spencer? No - must be Calvin? Irish county? Hope it's Clare and not Offaly. lol

In my mum's side of the family first born daughters have their mother's first name as their middle name. So my great grandmother was x Constance (can't remember her first name - she was known as Connie), my grandmother is Constance Jean, my mum is Janet (close enough!) Elizabeth, and I'm Elizabeth Anne. Which means if I have a DD I am supposed to call her Anne. Not sure if we will though.

clumsymumluckybaby · 13/01/2011 23:32

no,your supposed to give her the middle name elizabeth...surely?

Mammie81 · 14/01/2011 00:41

My mum nicked my name off the woman in the bed next to her after she had me. This woman agreed she didnt mind their daughters having the same name as they'd never see each other again.

They did. Friends for 30 years.

And I didnt know this until said woman helped deliver MY baby last month!

Clumsy - sorry, I said it wrong but my examples were right. The mother's middle name becomes the daughter's first name, is what I should have said!

My Mother chose my son's name as i was ill after the birth and my son given days to live.

wheresmytractor · 16/01/2011 20:18

I am the product of an affair (my real dad was married, my mum was young, niave and fell in love) My middle name is Lara because my real father said my mother was his Lara... "the woman he would always love but could never have" This is a reference to Dr Chivago.

He stayed with his wife and 2 sons and they lost touch when I was about a year old. I always felt the name was a link to him that I cherished when I was growing up.

imustbemadasaboxoffrogs · 16/01/2011 20:28

My name was supposed to be >

I was born 10 weeks early (in 1969 this was a BIG deal)

The doctors told my Dad they had a choice, save your wife or save the baby, so we saved your wife and we've stuck the baby in an incubator but prepare for the worst (or words to that effect)

They decided not to "waste" the names they had chosen.

So my name is and it means "the bitter or the nasty one" because my Mum had a horrible time when she was pregnant Hmm

They had two boys after me though and never used the names

My parents decided that if I was born on or before my due date then my mum would name me, if I was born after then my Dad would name me. I was due on boxing day but born on 30th so thankfully my Dad named me, my mother wanted to call me Holly. I have since married and now have the surname Hollis. Holly Hollis doesn't sound too good!! Dad named me Rachel just because he liked it but my middle name is Ann after my Great Nan who bought my Dad up.

threefeethighandrising · 20/01/2011 11:48

wheresmytractor that's really touching. Did you ever meet your dad? (Sorry please don't answer if you don't want to, just wondering).

threefeethighandrising · 20/01/2011 11:51

imustbemadasaboxoffrogs goodness! Did that make you feel a little odd, or do you like your name?

babybear1983, DS is a Christmas baby and I'm really not keen on the obvious Christmas names either. His name does mean "little deer" though so there is (by coincidence) a tenuous Christmas link.

purepurple · 20/01/2011 11:53

My parents named me after a famous Beatles song
My daughter is named after my favourite sisters of Mercy song although DH thinks it is after his Grandma.
DS has my brother's name as his middle name. My brother died in a car crash on the same day that I found out I was pregnant with DS. He was 17.

purepurple · 20/01/2011 11:55

I forgot to add that I know someone called Penny because her mum gave birth to her on the toilet

swanandduck · 20/01/2011 12:43

I got a fairly bog standard Irish name that was popular at the time I was born. My middle names are after two saints that my mother prayed to because she was quite ill during the pregnancy and there was a danger she or I wouldn't make it.

My sister was given a very unusual Irish name that has become very, very popular lately in Ireland but there are very few people her age with the name.

My grandmother decided my brothers name and my mother was happy to go along with it. So he has a very English name which doesn't really match mine and my sister's.

5DollarShake · 20/01/2011 13:09

I'm named are both my grandmothers, which meant I was saddled with a very old-fashioned name. My Dad always says that just after I was born and named, the obituaries starting filling up with old ladies who died with my name. Hmm Grin

He really wondered if they'd done the right thing - my first name is his Mum's name and my middle name is Mum's Mum's name - it is a more run-of-the-mill name, so they rationalised that I could use it as my first name once I got older if I really didn't get on with the first name.

I'm 37 now and I've never met anyone else with my name. But of course, as the cycle of fashion turns and turns, you now can't move for little baby girls with either my name, or one of the variations. It is now definitely one of those, 'oh no, does the world really need another xxx' name?!

MoonGirl1981 · 20/01/2011 14:07

I was named after the Queen Of The Fairies in Shakespeares A Midsummer Nights Dream. My mum likes the play and liked the name.

She's a cool character, I like being named after a strong fictional figure and I like the name.

It's also one of the few words in our language where it's impossible to drop the T, so it's always said properly.

On the downside, I often tell people my name and they'll say, 'Where's Oberon?' And I have to say, 'Yes, yes. That's very funny, not heard that before.' Then shuffle off rolling my eyes.

My middle name is Moongirl. Full moon apparantly and my eyes looked like cresent moons when they were closed (partner insists tha they still do).

I like that too. But people often think I'm making it up!

:)

Hatterbox · 21/01/2011 12:42

I'm Harriet, named after my dad's maternal grandmother. My twin sister is Violet, named after his paternal grandmother.

I have four middle names, two are family names, the other two are names my parents liked.

Whenever I have to put my full name, including middle name(s) on a form, there is never enough space. Thanks mum and dad.

Oh my husband 'did a Diana' during our wedding vows, and got two of the names the wrong way round, but I forgave him! Grin

Asteria · 21/01/2011 13:05

My parents hated eachother so when my father put Rebecca forward as a name for me my mother said no to spite him! I HATE the name they eventually gave me (Rachel) with a passion. My mother confessed a few days ago, when I was grumbling about how much I hated my name (my 5 siblings all have very lovely names and mine stands out as being the shit one!), that she wishes that she had called me Rebecca (shortened to Becca or Bex) after all as I would suit it far more!
I was very careful when naming my DS, he has a slightly unusual but very cool first name, very bland and normal Harry in the middle and then his other middle name is his paternal grandmother's maiden name (the only connection we have with his father).
