I can only speak for myself but I don't like it. Reminds me of Haddock. Sorry

How about Maxwell? or Matthew?

I immediately thought Haddock too!

bimblealong · 10/01/2011 22:19

Ok how about without the K spelt Maddoc. Still remind you of haddock?

Less so, but still not liking it much. However, it's not my baby so I don't want to be rude.

It would still sound the same and he may still be nicknamed Maddoc the Haddock regardless of the K on the end or not.

AnnOnimous · 10/01/2011 22:22

First thought was haddock, sorry.

What about Maddox, if you are wanting something similar.

greentig3r · 10/01/2011 22:22

Could fit it in a limerick with paddock and haddock..?

bimblealong · 10/01/2011 22:24

Don't worry I'm not too sure on it myself so you don't need to apologise. I'm looking for honest opinions.

Haddock. Immediately.

Biscuit
onepieceoflollipop · 10/01/2011 22:26

Are there other names you are more sure about?

How far pg are you.

I only had boys' names sorted for my 2 children. I have 2 dds! Grin So don't worry too much if you are undecided before the birth.

I loved the girls' name Emma (still do, absolutely love it). however, it didn't "suit" either of my girls so we didn't use it.

Guacamole · 10/01/2011 22:33

Madoc (one d and one c) is a Welsh boys name meaning 'fortunate'... It's not pronounced like haddock, it's pronounced mahdock.

bimblealong · 10/01/2011 22:38

Yes, it's the welsh version of Maddox. It's a welsh surname I believe.

And first name, I know a Madoc. I quite like it. But Maddock also made me think of Haddock.

soda1234 · 10/01/2011 22:48

As in Port Madoc, where my dad was born, think it must be a Welsh St.'s name. Or why would he have a Port named after him?

Guacamole · 10/01/2011 22:57

As in Porthmadog? If so, know it well. Was he a Saint? I'm going to have to google now.

Guacamole · 10/01/2011 23:01

Madoc or Madog ab Owain Gwynedd was, according to folklore, a Welsh prince who sailed to America in 1170, over three hundred years before Christopher Columbus's voyage in 1492.

According to Wikipedia.

I genuinely like it, are you Welsh OP, because if your DS gets... 'that's an interesting name, where is it from?'... 'it's Welsh'... 'oh are you Welsh?'...'uuuuurrr no'?

bimblealong · 10/01/2011 23:04

I have googled too and it seems it was St. Aedh's namesake but not actual name.

We are not welsh btw - just liked the name

I quite like Madoc - it's handsome and the spelling is quite cool! Maddock is odd.

SilkStalkings · 12/01/2011 09:38

Madoc is ok, if it doesn't rhyme with haddock, ie with a nice Welsh 'oc' sound.

BerryLellow · 12/01/2011 09:41

And in Cornish it's Madok. And I don't care who likes it or not Wink

rockinhippy · 12/01/2011 09:43

Its OK as a name in itself, but think of the poor kid & the nicknames he's going to get at School, personally I wouldn't do it unless you want to end up wit him known as Fish??

BerryLellow · 12/01/2011 10:06

I think children make up names whatever someone's called, surely? There's enough 'out there' names now that it's quite normal to be called Rainbow/Spartacus/Woody.

seeker · 12/01/2011 10:10

"t's quite normal to be called Rainbow/Spartacus/Woody."

It isn't you know. Have a look at your child's class list!
