only ttc at the moment but interested in opinions.

i really struggle with girl's names, but somehow during a late night conversation DH and I discovered we actually both liked the above as a name for imaginary dc2 if a girl.

would be Lois Catherine (surname).

thanks in advance. have namechanged for this just in case of encountering my rl friends. :)

very stuck for potential boy names, that'll be another thread soon!

Love it. Top of our list .Just realised this thread is from 2012 not 2013! Did you go for it?
We don't know if we are having a boy or a girl but it's one of only 2 girls names me & DH both agree on... One website said Lois means 'superior'. Not sure whether it would be wise to tell baby that part!

MidnightMasquerader · 11/02/2013 14:05

Lois is on a popularity curve - in that it's going up. There's about to be quite a few more girls about with this name. Well, there already are.

As for 'Loice' - Grin never heard that pronunciation before.

surelyyoucantbeserious · 11/02/2013 14:22

Hmm wondering whether she would be one of many in class....

Can you have Lois with a surname starting with 'Fr' ?? Or too much of a mouthful because of the 's' ending?

I seem to like names ending in 's' ... top choice for a boy is currently Marcus.

snapcrunch · 15/11/2014 08:18

Just found this while searching again. I don't have a little Lois as we had a boy. :)

However, I'm pg again and can't decide if I've gone off it.

Mainly because I can't think of a nickname I like for it. My older DC call each other little nicknames a lot which made me think of it.

I'm not keen on Lolo or Lolly or other variations I've seen, but I guess a pet name isn't essential.

I like it prn Loys

JazzAnnNonMouse · 15/11/2014 10:09

Lane

snapcrunch · 15/11/2014 16:21

It would be the Low-iss pronunciation.

Just need to decide if I still like it enough. Confused

my nan was Lois pronounced "Loyce" rather than "Lo-is". It will be our little ones middle name if it turns out to be a girl Smile

my nan used to say it was french & should be pronounced "Loy" but not sure if that's true

Bowlersarm · 15/11/2014 17:57

What did you call your DS?

Lois is such an ugly name to me, I don't like it at all. Some popular names aren't used because they go out of fashion because they become so common, but Lois will always only be 10-a-generation because it's so unattractive.

It's a bit odd because I love Louis for a boy, and quite like Louise. But Lois just...no.

Why ironic islandmama?

iwasabrooker · 15/11/2014 18:09

Donna someone up the thread gave me an origin for it, I don't think it was French. There was done discussion that the Loyce version was used in Wales.

bowler I'm not going to put my boys names on cos it would out me, sorry. :) they are both not made up but not popular names IYSWIM. DS1 is in top 300 DS2 just inside top 100

iwasabrooker · 15/11/2014 18:22

Oh ffs name change fail.

loislines · 15/11/2014 20:08

I've always loved my name. I never met another one growing up so had a fair few spelling / pronunciation issues to correct, but it's far more popular now so that shouldn't be a problem. I got nicknamed Lo or Lowly if anything but it's short enough not to need a nickname really.

littlejohnnydory · 15/11/2014 21:28

I love it but 'Loice' is definitely Welsh - that's sadly the reason I couldn't use the name, as that would be the accepted pronunciation where we live - 'Low-iss' is the pronunciation I like but here she would spend her lifecorrecting people.

saintsandpoets · 15/11/2014 22:42

Lois is effortlessly cool. Excellent, excellent name.

NinjaPanda34 · 15/11/2014 22:45

I know a Lois which is pronounced Loy. Either way I like it. :)

TwllBach · 15/11/2014 22:50

Another one living in north wales here and I've taught a few little girls called Lois, pronounced Loyce. I actually prefer it to Low-iss... But I don't dislike Low-iss either. And I think there are worse role models than Lois lane Grin

mrsfarquhar · 15/11/2014 23:03

I love Lois (as lowiss). Think its pretty and unusual without being too 'look at me' unusual.

snapcrunch · 16/11/2014 13:40

Hmm maybe I'll stick with it for now, thanks. :)

I love the name. I think that it's a good thing that tons of other kids will not have the name. It is also the name of my favourite cousin who is an incredible woman. I don't think that she has ever had trouble with her name.

TheNewStatesman · 01/01/2015 03:58

I have only ever heard Low-iss. It is a lovely name.

florascotia · 01/01/2015 12:58

As previous poster said, Lois is of Greek origin. It's in the New Testament. It means 'better' or 'more desirable'. Original pronounciation = Low-is.
www.behindthename.com/name/lois-1

It's not related to Louis or Louise. They are versions of a Germanic name, Ludwig.

Teachermummy27 · 02/01/2015 14:43

I have a 17 month old Lois. Know a couple of teenage ones.

It's a good old fashioned name that's not mega popular (yet!) and suited our little girl more than anything else we had on the possibles list.
