only ttc at the moment but interested in opinions.

i really struggle with girl's names, but somehow during a late night conversation DH and I discovered we actually both liked the above as a name for imaginary dc2 if a girl.

would be Lois Catherine (surname).

thanks in advance. have namechanged for this just in case of encountering my rl friends. :)

very stuck for potential boy names, that'll be another thread soon!

Don't be daft, nobody pronounces it Loice, that's some daft person who didnt know how to pronounce it and gave it to their child as a name without realising how its supposed to be said.

You wont believe this but i met a child recently called Sean. Not pronounced Shawn but Seeen. I was v confused and the mum said "You know, Like Seeen Connery". I didnt have the heart to tell her..........

Rhubarbgarden · 03/01/2011 22:34

Dislike it, sorry.

snapcrunch · 03/01/2011 22:47

i suppose it's unlikely that there's a name out there that everybody likes!

thanks for feedback and a chat. :)

Actually Nightstar you are wrong there I know of several children who are called 'Lois' and it is pronounced 'Loice'. I live in Wales though so maybe it's a Welsh thing. I think it's very pretty pronounced this way.

Love it. I think of Lois Lane, and The Last September (a book where the principal character was Lois).

Nightstar · 04/01/2011 15:23

Hi TheBreastmilksOnMe - I live in Wales too! And still think the parents must have made a mistake! You must be up in the North ....

;-) Just kidding x

BuntyPenfold · 04/01/2011 22:30

I know an Imogen, pronounced with a hard g, G for goat iyswim. Her parents must have read it, not heard it pronounced.
never met a Loice though.

Lois is nice.

diddl · 05/01/2011 09:08

Like it a lot.

Pipistrellina · 05/01/2011 19:05

My Mum is called Lois and it's definitely pronounced Luhwiss. She does occasionally get mistakenly called Lewis or Louise but mostly people have heard of it (the superman connection helps). So you would have an unusual name but not one that stumped everyone. And for what it's worth my mother is a wonderful woman!

millymae · 05/01/2011 20:11

I love it - desperately wanted it for my daughter but OH wasn't keen because there was (and still is) a make of denim jeans with the same name.

I think it's a name that is suitable for all ages - its easy to spell and is unusual without being totally off the wall.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 06/01/2011 18:59

Yes I am from up North.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 06/01/2011 19:07

Love it

tebbles · 06/01/2011 19:14

I dont like it because of the 'low' part. I think it 'depresses' the names for me- low, lowly. It makes me see a sad girl/woman. Sorry.

But OTOH I have never met one before so maybe my opinion would change if I met one in person.

rachel234 · 07/01/2011 14:39

Love it.

Pipistrellina · 07/01/2011 15:13

Re my post about it being my mum's name - we're Australian so pronounce it differently, but everyone else that said Low-is is correct!

cowboylover · 09/01/2011 21:28

I think its a really nice name, my managers girl and she is lovely!

snapcruncher · 06/01/2012 17:12

Just dredging this up as i am actually 5 months pregnant now and still quite like this. DH going off it a bit which is annoying as I can't think of any other names I like.

I don't know if DC will be a boy or a girl, we just picked one of each before DC1 was born and would like to do the same!

oikopolis · 06/01/2012 17:31

It's Greek. It's pronounced "low-iss", in accordance with Greek pronunciation rules. Popularized because the name is mentioned in the New Testament of the Bible.

Perhaps some people say "loice", but that's incorrect, or a reflection of a v heavy regional accent.

Loice sounds very Brummy...
It's a bit too American sounding for my taste - can't get away from the Superman connection.
Unusual though - I don't know any in RL. I think it's a name that looks pretty written down.

snapcruncher · 06/01/2012 18:48

thanks :)

Names are so hard! Confused

TheOriginalNutcracker · 06/01/2012 18:50

I love it.

Oh and I am a bummie, and it is pronounced Low is here too.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 06/01/2012 18:50

LOL, clearly I meant Brummie Blush

snapcruncher · 06/01/2012 18:52
