I love it, fancied it for DD but was an ex of Dh's name so no go.

I like it as Clare.

Strange to think it would be a really unusual name at school etc, compared to our day when there were 5 in each class!

readysalted · 22/12/2010 19:27

ime a clare always bothers me when people give me an i personally i love my name hardly any in my school only one other ive thanked my mum and dad for calling me clare could of been worse back end of the sixtiesXmas Grin

CokeFan · 22/12/2010 19:42

My 2yo DD's a Claire. We keep getting it spelled Clare (or in the case of the CTF people, Calire Hmm). I reckon she's going to be the only one at school with the name (as I was with my name - not uncommon but more of a 60s than a 70s name).

Our surname isn't common but is longish and has Rs and Ls in it so lots of names just didn't "go" with it. We needed something short so Claire was our first choice (Amy was second choice).

mandy1978 · 22/12/2010 21:02

i love the name, there were 4 in my class but it is a classic pretty name and pretty rare today! x

LofticusBofticus · 22/12/2010 21:06

I think its a fabby name

LittleYellowTeapot · 22/12/2010 21:07

It could be a grower.
I always thought of it as being a bit frumpy but I think it's uite pretty actually. I prefer it with an 'i' though.

ensure · 23/12/2010 17:41

It's great as long as you don't live in the northwest, when it becomes Clurrr.

Like it without the I too. Also like Clara, Clarissa and Clarabel.

sadiesadiemarriedlady · 23/12/2010 20:37

Beautiful, prefer it without the i as you have written it. Classical beautiful name.

dietcokesholidaysarecoming · 23/12/2010 22:11

Know lots if claires and one Clare. Depends if you want her to be forever spelling it.

muminthemiddle · 27/12/2010 12:07

I love it. Would go with the "I" spelling though.x

oldandgreynow · 27/12/2010 12:15

A teacher friend told me 'Clare' tends to be more classy than 'Claire'

MangoTango · 27/12/2010 15:26

Cokefan I have a 6 year old Clare. Nice to meet someone else with a child with the same name as it so rarely happens! I've always loved it, but yes she is the only one in the school.

NadiaWadia · 28/12/2010 00:50

Clare is traditionally the British spelling. Claire is the French version, which became popular in the 60s and 70s along with names like Michelle, Louise, Julie, etc.

Slightly prefer Clare myself. Lovely name, anyway.

ThingOne · 28/12/2010 01:00

It's a lovely name and overdue a revival.

Clary · 28/12/2010 01:09

You'll get a lot of "I'm a Clare" on this (oh, I see you have) which should tell you something...

It's my middle name btw.

I have about 25 people on my phone (sad bastard). Four of them are called Clare.

If someone rings me up and says "It's Clare" there are at least seven people it could reasonably be (so I have to busk for a bit while they tell me enough info to work out which it is! Grin).

DD and DS2 both had a Clare teaching them in yr 2 and then yr 3. Not the same Clares either!

What I am saying is that it was very very popular 35-45 yrs ago. Does this bother you?How can I know. But it's a bit like calling yr DD Karen or Julie; or yr DS Dave, Steve, Mark, Paul or Martin.

bulby · 28/12/2010 01:12

Or there is also 'clair' I think it is such a simple name and for that reason it's one of my favourites. You can't have pre conceptions about a Claire/Clare/clair. Well other than the parents must have loved Gilbert osullivan!

scrivette · 28/12/2010 14:45

Another Clare here, I love the name, especially as it is unusual now, although I was always one of a few at school.

I hate it when it is pronounced Calaire though!

girlscout · 28/12/2010 15:30

Lovely name and spelling,go for it.

FAOnTelly · 28/12/2010 19:41

Lovely name, although I much prefer it without the 'i'. Reminds me of County Clare in Ireland - a beautiful place.

Lonnie · 28/12/2010 22:58

It is beautiful and she will be the only one with that name. She will however spend her life being asked " with or without an i?"

Narketta · 28/12/2010 23:07

I'm a Clare and i've always thought my name boring

Komondor · 29/12/2010 15:26

Classic

Sazisi · 29/12/2010 15:34

DD2's middle name is Clare, after the Irish county (roots). I like it spelt both ways; I wouldn't worry about the having to spell it issue.. I'm a Sarah and always having to specify the 'h', you get Ann and Anne, there are umpteen ways to spell Isabel!
