Hiya, basically i'm 24wks pg and we know we are expecting our first little girl (we already have a DS) and have just begun to discuss names but can't seem to agree on many Confused the one we both love atm is Dylan, but both feel that we should prob name her something a bit more feminine seeing as Dylan is largely used as a boys name in the uk and we don't want people to think we have 2 boys when we say the childrens names, trouble is we can't seem to find any feminine names we like! help!!!

Don't know if it's been said, but Dylan for a girl is quite popular in the States. Ralph Lauren's daughter, of the sweet shop fame, is called Dylan.

nonanny · 20/11/2010 21:07

I am coming round to Dylan, but what about a bit extra like 'Dylan-Maria'?

Dramamama · 21/11/2010 13:26

I though Ralph Laurens DD was called Dylan! i actually got it from charlies angels (Drew barrymores character...we also like Drew but DPs brother is called Andrew and drew is his nn) and then saw it again on desperate housewives as someone mentioned earlier. Littleyellowteapot not sure on Dawn Frenchs DD but i know Lisa Faulkners DD is called Billie, We can't use Charlie as we already have a couple in the family and it wld get too confusing!

I think it's thought of too much as a boy's name.

LadyStitt · 21/11/2010 13:32

I ABSOLUTLY LOVE DYLAN FOR A GIRL!!

I am currently 26 weeks pregnant, we do not know the sex and are struggling to find a girls name that we both like. Our cat is called Dylan and we have joked on several occasions now that we are going to have to rename the cat so we can use Dylan for our Daughter!!!!!!!!!

SantasNutellaFairy · 21/11/2010 13:39

Where I live- Dylan is always a boys name.

Clueless79 · 21/11/2010 13:54

I have to say I absolutely love Dylan as a girl's name, so striking and individual. It's one we're considering too.

LOVE it, it's at the top of my list even though I'm not even pg yet - actually quite worried reading this that might be everywhere by the time I get round to using it!! I have a feminine middle name planned though...

Mousesmummy · 19/01/2011 22:41

My sister is called Ciaran and hated it her WHOLE life! It made her stand out at school, was the butt of everyone's jokes, was mistaken all the time for a boy (new teachers etc) and generally made her very unhappy at school.
I cannot imagine why you would want to do this to your precious child - If you want an 'unusual' name, great - but there are lots of unusual girls names out there!
30 years on my sister has grown to like her name - no-one ever forgets her, which is useful for her job, but as I say it has taken her a LONG time to get to this point.

bambiandthumper · 20/01/2011 00:08

I really like it, and it is the name of Ralph Laurens daughter. I would say go for it but if you feeling a bit nervous after the reaction here how about Cordelia, which you could them nickname to Dylan or Dilly. She would also then have the option of having an obviously feminine name, or something more sophisticated when she's older.

If you like less 'girly' names how about Frederica or Thomasinia. I also love Flynn and Scout, which are along the same lines.

ValiumSilverTongue · 20/01/2011 09:56

I see where you're coming from because imo it's quite a feminine sound. I think if I had no preconceptions about it and didn't know which sex it belonged to I would say girl, and I would like it as a girls' name.

but if you were going to say Daryl for example then I might say yeah go for it, but right now there are too many BOY dylans out there. It would be strange.

ValiumSilverTongue · 20/01/2011 10:01

I like names like Lindsay, Vivien, Meredith.

Dylana-maria is a train crash though. Please don't put an a on the end of it. Or an extra n. If you use Dylan, spell it the normal way. Put Catherine or Elizabeth in the middle!

A girl called Ciaran?! that must have been tough alright? That is not a name that I would think,,, ooooooh lovely on a girl. Some names like Finlay, I can understand why parents who want a unisex vibe use them.

But as a pp says, it does reduce the number of names available for boys.

strawberrylion · 20/01/2011 20:27

It's also the name of Sean Penn's daughter...

Edmundo · 20/01/2011 20:33

I was flicking through the new mini boden catalogue today and there is a wee girl in there called Dylan. It does seem to suit her!

Mousesmummy · 20/01/2011 22:53

Yes Ciaran! Mum swears blind there was an actress called Ciaran but we tease her it was too much G&A!
She surely is the ONLY female Ciaran??

Dramamama · 10/02/2011 10:36

Thank you all for your in-put, we have decided on another name now which we both prefer but i will still keep it in mind for any future pregnancys.
I have to laugh because my name has now been mentioned as a suggestion more then once and always thought my name was very girly despite being unisex but i'm flattered people approve of my mums taste in names Grin.

Nothing wrong with Dylan for a girls name. If you and DH both love it then go for it.

AllieW · 10/02/2011 11:37

Don't do it! She'll grow up thinking that you really wanted a boy not a girl. There are plenty of strong girl's names about.

Given the current trend for older names, how about Dilys?

greenzebra · 10/02/2011 13:03

Dylan pronounced as Dee-lan is a turkish girls name my friend was considering calling her first this as she was married to a turkish man.

I tried to convince her to spell it like it sounded but she had a boy in the end.

I also worked with a girl called Colter its an american boys name, and when she enrolled at college they put her in the boys dorms, and they didnt believe that her name was colter. She had really bad trouble with her name.

kerala · 10/02/2011 13:15

I would ignore the "go for it" comments. Round here Dylan is actually a rather popular name for boys - there are 3 in DDs class. Your poor daughter would be nicely set up for a school career of confusion and embarrassment why on earth would you do it?

greenzebra · 10/02/2011 13:20

O should have said her sisters were called Morgan and Sitka, which i think on this side of the ocean could pass for girls names. I think in america you get away with a bit more when it comes to names and of course if your rich and famous and hollywood you can name your kid anything.

Also in the states its a tradition in some areas to name their daughters after their maiden names, so I also knew a

Alston
Somerville
Devon

But if your stuck on Dylan for a girl go for it, its your baby.

shouldnotbehere · 10/02/2011 14:11

Delwyn Derryl and Robyn are great girls name.

Not keen on Dylan as a girls name.
