Moral dilema: my or DH's name choice for our 2 week old baby?

Hi, our baby son is almost 2 weeks old and yet we haven't decided on the name. The problem is apparently in me, because few months ago The Perfect Name came into my head (Gregory) and I haven't considered any others names ever since. DH is not happy about Gregory though (not overly unhappy, but not happy), and I asked him to give his shortlist. He gave me a list of eight names, seven from which I completely dislike, and only one (Oscar) is so-so to me. He said to me "if you not happy with any of my names, then choose your own". I am tempted between choosing Gregory but feel guilty at the same time in front of DH.
Admittedly, I haven't been in the best relationship with my DH lately, I am angry with him for number of reasons (have a right to be), but could I selfishly choose my own name - I don't know...
Our DS1 is Dominic, the name we were both happy about...
Time is ticking, what to do?

Hi guys, I must say we are still undecided.. As I was leaning towards naming the baby Oscar, DH got so annoyed that the baby is nameless that said let's name him Gregory David.. probably will have to draw the name!

Oh gosh, DH told me he is now happy with Gregory David because his colleagues liked it :) but I have been trying to call the baby Greg and it does not come out well. Maybe Oscar would have suited him better at the end of the day.... Still got one week till registration appointment..

How about Rory? it sounds like Gregory, you could use it as a nn instead of Greg or as a whole new name entirely! I must say Oscar's very, VERY commonpopular at the mo! Oh well good luck darling, hopefully the perfect name will come to you soon!Smile x

God, have to register the name tomorrow, still don't know which I am going to go for!!!!

I happen to think Gregory is a bit, erm, dated...

expectingno3 · 05/12/2010 15:27

Oh what a nightmare homelyperson, I really feel for you. I foresee the same problem with myself and DH. We are at polar opposites with names. If its any help, I'd go with Oscar over Gregory.

chaya5738 · 05/12/2010 16:15

Oscar WAY too popular at the moment. Stick with your first instinct!

homelyperson · 05/12/2010 18:44

Even though I love Gregory, my instinct tells me Oscar for some reason... this is hard anyway.

Hey, don't give me more options, as DH is away and not available to contact and left the decision for me. I can only chose from the combination of the three names. Have been browsing MN about Oscar and got a bit concerned of its overpopularity. David Gregory? Might be, but just adds to my headache! I guess all those sleepless nights with a newborn contributed to my nonability to decide..

I think Gregory sounds cool. Goes well with Dominic too.

one suggestion to help you choose :

if in years to come ds asks why did you call me x ? does one of your shortlist have a story you could attach to the name.

all 3 names are lovely but if you do choose david both dss would have the same initial which might be a problem in years to come
.
we had similar problems with dd4 and only found out after registration that here in scotland you can register a child's birth without a name and add the name later (within 2 years) or in exceptional circumstances be given an extension . not sure if that is a possibility where you are .

fwiw think gregory nn greg or grey is lovely with david as a middle name

oscar will always be the bin dweller in sesame street or a movie award .

homelyperson · 05/12/2010 20:57

Sorry for some reason my message got repeated. Ok so now I am thinking Gregory David (was Oscar about an hour ago).

I had a nightmare choosing my DS2's name and there was only me in charge of choosing! I had liked only one name throughout my pregnancy and it was ridiculed by everyone and when he finally arrived I couldn't call him that name (Forrest).

I know here in England we have six weeks to register the birth and I made my appointment for that six week ending mark but as it happened that day came without me feeling happy with any decision. I turned up to my appt, was met with a very kind and concerned registrar who sent me away to think about it for a few more days. She said she would rather use her discretion and I went over the standard time limit than for me to end up unhappy or her to see me again to change his name! Lovely woman.

Two or three days later I went back and was happy to name him Laurence Eden ...... He is mostly Laurie now and I love him and his name to pieces.

So I think you could ask for more time and continue to think about your options. Please please be happy with your DC's name

Sorry, didn't mean to confuse! Just thought those options were very similar in style and might be a good compromise. Didn't realise your DH was away.

In order of preference

  1. David
  2. Gregory
  3. Oscar

So I'd go for David Gregory, followed by Gregory David.

Hulababy · 05/12/2010 21:31

I prefer Oscar to Gregory.

But I don't think either of you can chose a name the other dosn't like.
