Jack for a boy

Emsyboo · 05/11/2010 12:54

Looking to call my baby boy Jack after his grand dad who passed away a few years ago. My DH loves the name and so do both our parents but one family friend has been very vocal about how she doesn't like it saying he will be called Jack Sh!t at school.
I like the name and can't think of a better one but as it has been one of the top baby names for a few years I'm not sure I want him to be one of many other Jacks although not met any Jacks baby or grown up for a long time.

Jack goes well with our surname just wondered what people thought?

Do feel a bit under pressure as DH has gone around telling everyone that the baby is going to be called Jack but want to get the name right and be 100% happy even if we have to change it when we meet him.

Thanks

Of course he won't be called Jack Shit. He will be called Jack-whatever-your-surname-is though, to distinguish him from the other 15 Jacks in his class.

RoobyMurray · 05/11/2010 12:58

The name is immensely popular because people like it. Kids will think of nicknames whatever the name is. Your friend is being ridiculous.

Komondor · 05/11/2010 13:01

Jack's a great name, go for it.

issy123 · 05/11/2010 13:02

Its nice and if it has a speical meaning for you go for it. I don't agree with your family friend. You can find something negative about most names. I'm Isabel and how many times did I get 'Is a bell necessary on a bike' at school, I'm not in therapy because of it.

Jack is a great name. To say it is supposed to be so popular I only know one. Personally I think your family friend needs to grow up.

LouMacca · 05/11/2010 13:14

I also only know one Jack - aged 7.

I have never heard anyone refer to a Jack as Jack Shit Shock What a horrible comment to make. I think its a lovely name.

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 05/11/2010 13:21

its a great name, short, manly, easy to holler across the park ....

never heard of ANYONE in RL saying jackshit, isn't that quite an american saying? never use it here anyway (north scotland). Your friend is being weird frankly. Do she have ishooos with people having babies? and as other posters have said, kids will make up nicknames whatever the name is in the first place!

i only know 2 jacks, a year apart, not babies. there are more charlies, harrys and thomas/toms around here than jacks certainly.

so use it if you love it. but tell your dh to ease off on the announcing, sometimes when the baby arrives, the name just doesn't work and you end up with something completely different by day 2!!

FindingGuysMojo · 05/11/2010 13:22

Out of all the very very popular names of the last decade, Jack is about the only one I don't tire of hearing. It's a fab name.

I don't know where on earth your friend is coming from but I wouldn't pay her any attention at all?

ChickensHaveNoLips · 05/11/2010 13:31

I have a 10 year old Jack, and he has never been called Jack Shit Hmm It's a great name :)

OkieCokie · 05/11/2010 13:43

This is why I would never tell anyone names that I was thinking until baby was born. I only know one Jack despite it being a popular name. It's popularity certainly would not put me off. Also the family connection is one point but surely you still would not call your child a family name if you really did not like the name so therefore you must like Jack iyswim. Just go for it and sod what other people think, your friend is very immature.

Emsyboo · 05/11/2010 13:46

Thanks for your feedback, I agree kids will do their best to think of a funny nickname to taunt each other with no matter what the name. She is a family friend so not someone I would choose to be friends with but can be very horrible at times and always says upsetting things to people!

I am open to changing his name if I feel it doesn't suit him but for now I think I'll stick with Jack his great grand dad would be proud x x x

I don't know any Jacks here. My Grandad Jack passed away this summer, and it will be our hypothetical future son's middle name in honour of him. It would be his first name but DH vetoed on account of it being no.1 for so long.

I bet his Great Grandad will be very proud that you have picked his name.

PaisleyLeaf · 05/11/2010 13:54

I like the name Jack and it was just about the only boys name DH and I could agree on. Had DD been a boy she would probably be Jack. But I'm glad that didn't happen now - there are LOADS of them here.

Ineedsomesleep · 05/11/2010 14:18

Glad it does go well with your last name because, like Bucharest says, he'll be known as Jack-whatever-your-surname-is once he's in nursery/school/college/uni/work.

It was a pretty horrible comment for your family friend to make though.

lilly13 · 05/11/2010 14:42

I love it, however, I thought it is a dimitive form of John (well, at least in America it is...)

JamieLeeCurtis · 05/11/2010 15:01

I really like it. And despite its popularity, I've only ever met 1 adult and 2 children (age 7 and 10 respectively, not in the same school - only 1 in DSs school.

JamieLeeCurtis · 05/11/2010 15:02

.. I live in London and maybe there's a bigger diversity of names you don't find else where?

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 05/11/2010 20:40

well i'm in rural north scotland so not much diversity here and i only know 2 jacks in all the groups we know. i know its been so popular for so long, but it def wouldn't put me off using a name if, like the op, we like it, have a family connection and it goes well with surname. Strike!

jem21 · 19/11/2010 23:05

jack is my all time favourite name but since meeting my partner have gained a nephew called jack so the name can never be used :(
i think your friend is being abit rude,he will not get teased.the name means alot to you and after all its your baby,go with what you love.

Duffstuff · 20/11/2010 08:38

I love the name Jack - it was my grandad's name too- he was fantastic Grin. I didn't choose Jack for my son's name four years ago, on account of it being too popular but after all that, I dont know one in my area and myDS goes to nursery, playgroup and swimming classes!

saffy85 · 20/11/2010 08:39

Your, ahem, friend is being incredibly spiteful. Tell them to do one because what they are spouting is utter bollocks. Hate people like this. Had my heart set on the name Lucy once and when MIL found out she started relentlessly making fun saying "she'll get called Lucy-loo. And then it'll be Lucy-toilet!" Hmm I still loved the name but MIL ruined it because I didn't want DD's own granny to pick on her.

Jack is popular but it's a great name, an all rounder IYSWIM. Infact....

littlemissturquoise · 20/11/2010 20:19

Jack suits a child and an adult. It is very popular.

hulabula · 22/11/2010 11:02

Very very popular...

nancy10 · 28/11/2010 11:52

I have an 11 year old called Jack. He has never been called Jack shit. At home we do call him Jack Sprat but he has never been called anything other then Jack. I wasn't keen on the name to begin with but my dh had his heart set on it but I love it now and he's the only Jack in school!
