We've chosen our boys name (Stephen).

Please let me know which is your favourite out of the following girls names:

FFion
Caroline

We keep changing our mind weekly, at the moment erring to Ffion.

If you could just let me know which you prefer, and I will count the votes!!

Sorry can spell - persuasion even.

Prefer Caroline - its a nice name but it is quite sensible.

Teds77 · 04/11/2010 11:28

If you had a Seren would you want a Stephen too? Both are lovely but I think I'd only use one and I'd save the S and en combination for Stephen.

Though I'm biased as I've alrealy voted Caroline and if I have a DS he will be Stephen Blush

Komondor · 04/11/2010 13:30

Hey Teds77. Your right Stephen and Caroline go lovely together, and I'm loving the nn Carrie. She'll most likely be the only Caroline in her class too.

Also both classic names.

Caroline makes me think of thirty/forty somethings women - i.e lots of girls that I went to school with were called Caroline.

Ffion is better.

Komondor · 04/11/2010 14:44

Messylittlemonkey - you just made me think of the grown-ups I know with the name. Hmm But I'm sure Caroline would soon become my daughters name.

I dont think of Caroline as a 1970s name, a classic name, which happened to be popular in the 1970s. My great granny was called Caroline, and she was born in the 1890s.

Olivia is a classic name, which is very popular, but I think could be a name for all ages (Olivia Newton John).

Really like the name Caroline

YouNeverCanTell · 04/11/2010 16:03

Caroline is lovely.

I think your husband and my husband have been sharing notes! My DH said exactly the same about popular names, nature names and pompous names. He also had 'weirdy names' and 'wantonly strangely spelled names' categories!

Julia is also nice. But there are lots of Erins around where we live. Carolyn would get the spelling veto from my DH and Seren would fall into his 'weirdy' category!

Komondor · 04/11/2010 16:21

Thanks YouNeverCanTell, if DH was English, I'm sure he'd consider Seren a weirdy name too. Such a traditionalist. Yes, when I showed DH the top 10 list of baby names, he considered Evie a made up name, and we both agreed that you should use Evelyn and Evie as nickname. However he then went on to say that Evelyn was poncey! I liked Eloise, which was also considered poncey by DH.

Yes, Carolyn has since been scrapped as a name, as hubbie always preferred Caroline, it was just me wanting a more unusual name.

With boys names, I loved Miles and Tristan - but no chance.

I'm happy with Stephen and Caroline though.

If you don't like Seren, you can always point out to your DH that it is very much a name for English hippies in Wales who want a Welsh name, at least round here (still a nice name, though).

Komondor · 04/11/2010 19:26

Well tonight we're liking Caroline (nn Carrie).

OP posts:
YouNeverCanTell · 04/11/2010 20:19

Oh, and I liked Miles and Tristan too!

My DH had a very strong 'pompous' filter and vetoed many, many of my choices of names. It took a long time to find names we agreed on. When my children were babies I used to try out some of my first choices (Monty, Cosmo, Serena, Anita ?). But now I just laugh to think I could ever have considered them!

The names we have chosen are very much in line with your choices. They suit my children (and our family style) and they have the advantage of being very unusual these days while still being familiar enough to be easily spelled!

Stephen and Caroline are both lovely names: enjoy using whichever you get to use.

Rhubarbgarden · 04/11/2010 20:21

Ffion or Julia

Komondor · 04/11/2010 21:09

Thanks all.

YouNeverCanTell, when I was first pregnant, I was adament that I wanted Clarissa as the girls name, but was vetoed, and yes there were tantrums from me. I think DH may have been right on this.

The more I think about Carolyn the less I am liking it. Its a variant of the classic Caroline, and if Caroline is dated, then Carolyn is more so.

Ffion I love, but we dont have a Welsh surname, and I think it is so much nicer with a Welsh surname. Seren, I love, but just not 100% convinced.

Cara, I just dont like as much as Caroline.

Erin, possibly too fashionable for us, and we're back to our concerns on whether its too harsh sounding.

Julia, one of my all time favourite names, but I dont like Julie as a nn. I think of Ali G and Me Julie. I like the nn Jools, and some people such as Julia Roberts, do not have it shortened.

I know May is a popular middle name, but I do think Julia May is beautiful together.

However, tonight it's Stephen and Carrie (Caroline).

Secretwishescometrue · 04/11/2010 21:55

My sister is Caroline Anne if thats any help on the middle name front? And I worked with a Carrie-Anne! Not so keen on May love Maya though...

MakemineaGandT · 04/11/2010 21:59

Carolyn - yuk

Caroline - lovely

BatsInTheSnowglobe · 04/11/2010 22:12

Caroline... Granny like?! Shock I prefer classic thank you, I'm only 31!
My mum would argue it was a good name to shout up the garden at dinner time! Grin

LaDiDaDi · 04/11/2010 22:58

Caroline or Julia.

Really like Stephen too.

Komondor · 04/11/2010 23:03

MakemineaGandT - I agree with you. Gone right of Carolyn today. So indecisive.

Anne is a nice middle name with Caroline, however with our surname initials spell a word.

BatsInTheSnowglobe - Caroline is definitely not granny like. Its a classic, there is Caroline Bingley from Pride and Prejudice, Caroline Penvenen from Poldark novels. Plus you have the song - Sweet Caroline.

Greenwing · 05/11/2010 23:20

Caroline is a lovely, classic name.
Love Carrie as a nn.
See how you feel when the baby is born.

Caro1302 · 06/11/2010 21:18

I'm a Caroline who's married to a Stephen. I was named after my grandmother but I still think of it as being a 70s name. I quite like my name Smile

maninthemooncup · 08/11/2010 14:41

Caroline is v nice and kind of ageless

Carolyn is not unpleasant but brings to mind a lady of a certain age in a cowl neck jumper and gored skirt with her glasses on a chain.

I really like Seren too, you've got some good names that you like, wait and see what baby looks like. Though you may find your OH tells the nurse what she's called before you've even seen her to check she looks like a ! (she does, it was fine :) )

maninthemooncup · 08/11/2010 14:42

ps I also like the nn Carrie, but be aware that people are strange, I know a Caroline who goes by "Roline". Oh yes.

Komondor · 15/11/2010 11:37

DH changed his mind over Caroline. Decided its too old. Grrr. He also decided against Julia, as he has a friend (not close) with this name.

DH favourite is Seren, but if we have a Seren we cant have a Stephen. Also our surname sounds a bit like Getty, which concerns me with Seren. DH likes the fact first name and surname together sounds a bit like Serengeti.

Second choices after Seren are Cara and Faye.

I love Faye Elizabeth. However I dont love Faye with our surname. Not keep on Freya.

If it was Caroline, I wanted Caroline (Carrie) Fleur G*ty.

I think we're having a boy, as we have agreed on Stephen.
