We've chosen our boys name (Stephen).

Please let me know which is your favourite out of the following girls names:

FFion
Caroline

We keep changing our mind weekly, at the moment erring to Ffion.

If you could just let me know which you prefer, and I will count the votes!!

prefer Caroline, but how about Catrin?

Beamur · 02/11/2010 22:50

Really don't like Ffion, Caroline better but sounds a bit dated in my opinion. (Sorry!)

Caroline DD was going to be Caroline.

pippibluestocking · 02/11/2010 22:54

Ffion makes me think of the Celtic woman on the BBC history for kids website. Check her out !

Keziahhopes · 03/11/2010 01:20

Due to Welsh family I would say Ffion out of your two.
Of your others I liked Seren and Julia to go with Stephen.

Happy choosing!

boiledegg1 · 03/11/2010 01:34

I would go for Ffion out of those two.

Seren or Erin are nice from your other choices.

LaTristesse · 03/11/2010 07:22

Seren and Erin are lovely...

autodidact · 03/11/2010 07:24

Caroline

vmcd28 · 03/11/2010 09:47

Erin

DandyDan · 03/11/2010 11:27

Caroline or Julia

Not Ffion unless you're a really Hague/Tory fan.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 03/11/2010 12:36

My vote goes to Ffion. It sounds like a balloon deflating so you can have hours of fun with it.
Erin, surely that means Ireland in Celtic? or has my DH been telling me fibs again.

Komondor · 03/11/2010 13:17

Thank you everyone.

Its an unfair vote, as I only added Julia, Erin, Seren and Carolyn as options later on.

However these are the results of your votes
(so far):

Caroline - 18
FFion - 7
Seren - 3
Julia - 3
Erin - 3
Carolyn - 1

In terms of popularity these are the positions from 2009 baby names table:

Erin - no. 33 (1705 girls named Erin)
Julia - number 84 (766 girls named Julia)
Seren - number 121 (447 girls named Seren)
FFion - number 210 (243 girls called Ffion)
Caroline - number 664 (55 girls called Caroline)
Carolyn - no. 2759 (8 girls named Carolyn)

Not sure what to read into the above.

I think Caroline and Julia are the most classic names, and have a family connection. Although great granny Caroline was an alcoholic (and spent many years in an asylum), but when I heard the stories I thought she was just misunderstood.

Ffion and Seren are short (DH prefers names that are no more than two syllanbles), and both lovely. Not too girly, and Welsh. I would definitely have Ffion, if we had a Welsh surname, but although DH is Welsh his great Grandfather was English and so we have an English surname.

Erin and Carolyn - I just like, although concerned Erin may be a list harsh sounding to some ears, and seems to be working its way up the popularity charts.

Hmm, erring to Caroline today.

Where is the emphasis in Seren? Is it SE-ren or Se-REN?

Komondor · 03/11/2010 15:26

I've always heard it pronounced Seh-ren.

I always say it, as I would say the beginning of word Serendipity.

I prefer Carolina or Karolina (kar-o-leena) to Caroline or Carolyn (both very 70s to my ear).

I really like Ffion and Seren too.

Ragwort · 03/11/2010 16:44

Caroline is a lovely name, very unusual these days but so classic Grin.

FIMBOfedupofrandomfireworks · 03/11/2010 16:46

I prefer Carolyn to Caroline. I quite like Cara too.

Komondor · 03/11/2010 17:58

Oh Carolina..... Love it DH would never agree.

Is it Kara or Cara? I quite like this name too.

I agree Ragwort, Caroline is lovely.

LoopyLoops · 03/11/2010 18:02

I prefer Cara. 'Dear' in Italian. Lovely.

Or Ffion. BTW I've taught a Ffion in England, miles from Wales, and she never had any problems as far as I know with the spelling etc.

galletti · 03/11/2010 18:14

Caroline, and Carolyn is really nice too, a a little bit more unusual - Giving a bit away, but I have lived with it for a more than a few years, and love my name!

Secretwishescometrue · 03/11/2010 20:43

I love Seren really lovely and Caroline would be my no.2 from your longer list. My sister is Caroline and has had Caz and Carrie as nn over the years quite like Carrie myself. Or on a diff note Clara? Stephen is a great name btw

LadyInPink · 03/11/2010 20:52

Caroline - It sounds prettier than Ffion. I remember a short series on about 2 years ago with an obnoxious mum called Ffion "with two eff's" as she would always say when introducing herself.

Love Carolyn as an option too as slightly more unusual.

Good luck!

ensure · 03/11/2010 23:49

Caroline is really nice. Classic, quite unusual these days, few good nicknames. That would be my choice. Otherwise... Erin I like too.

Komondor · 04/11/2010 10:26

Thanks all. I'm pleased Caroline has such lovely comments, and I like the nickname Carrie.

I like the name Cara, but not Clara. I know I'm odd.

I'm quite indecisive, with Stephen, it was DH favourite name from before I was even pregnant, and with some gental persuation, I now like it too.

DH favourite girls name is Seren, but I'm just not 100% convinced. DH must have a thing about names beginnning with an S and ending in en. He likes all the other options though.

Just updated tally:

Caroline - 21
FFion - 8
Seren - 5
Julia - 3
Erin - 3
Carolyn - 3
