Percy, Cuthbert or Coriolanus?

pumpkinpoppet · 30/10/2010 23:36

DH and I can't decide. We are thinking of Coriolanus Percy.

Don't want a name that there are loads of in the same school/nursery. Would prefer to be the only one. Needs to be reasonably traditional/not made up (DH's criteria).

but both of those first names are fine, why saddle the only boy with a shitstorm of a name?

you might as well call him pubert and have done with it.

Of course this is a joke. Made me titter though.

Goynor and Gudren eh?

"Guff" for short - yes I can see the attraction. Wink

BelligerentGhoul · 31/10/2010 10:41

Am still trying to get what's funny/awful about Horace and Thaddeus. I think they are lovely. And Hector.

piscesmoon · 31/10/2010 11:25

Hopefully Horace, Thaddeus and Hector think they are lovely too. They are not names that I would saddle a DC with. I try not to let people know what I think in RL but faced with a baby Horace I would be hard pressed to make a comment!

BelligerentGhoul · 31/10/2010 11:27

:)

But I honestly don't understand what's awful about them.

Now Cuthbert is clearly a joke name :) but I don't see the other three in the same way. Am I missing something?

SkylineDrifter · 31/10/2010 11:45

Haven't read the whole thread as about to go out, but please please please do not saddle your child with any of those names in your OP. They have to live with it, not you, don't be so selfish.

wisteria12 · 31/10/2010 12:02

I like how my son's name is always accompanied by "you're joking, right?". We call him Cully for short. (Yes, his name is Cuthbert).

poppydaisy · 31/10/2010 12:29

Percy (willy)

Titus (tight arse)

William (Willy)

"Some of this seems a bit narrow minded (don't you think)? This will be my first DS. I have two other DDs and they have never been teased."

I think this forum attracts a good cross section of (mostly female) society so it probably does reflect the kind of reaction you will get to these names. I contribute to a couple of other parenting forums and I know you will get similar responses to those on here.

Also your daughter's names aren't as ridiculous as the ones you have chosen for your son.

Strawbezza · 31/10/2010 17:35

If this is genuine, how about Pierce/Pearce/Piers instead of Percy?

runningrach · 01/11/2010 07:49

I don't think this forum attracts a good cross section of society at all, I have found in the last few months of being here that there are at least a significant minority of narrow-minded, opinionated (which would be fine if not narrow-minded), judgmental people.

Whether you think a thread is a joke or not, it's downright rude to jump on someone and denounce their preferences. And if it is a joke, that puts the original poster in exactly the same camp - poking smug, self satisfied fun at people who may like unusual names.

Perpetuating that attitude as adults causes the behaviour in children that you cite as a reason not to name children something unusual.

Whatever happened to tolerance - live and let live? No wonder the most popular names are 'off the scale' of popularity, too many people are too afraid of the backlash to use their imagination.

Bunbaker · 01/11/2010 09:38

I am only speaking from personal experience. I hated my unusual name as a child and as a result gave my daughter a traditional name that people had heard of, could spell and pronounce easily. The views on here are simply opinions. I don't think it is fair to ask for opinions, get mostly negative ones and then accuse everyone of being narrow minded. The OP asked for our views and has to accept that not everyone likes them.

I agree with this 100%. I also don't think that mumsnet views are representative of UK society overall - my ds's name is often described as 'posh', 'ridiculous', even 'gay' on here, whereas in reality we get very favourable comments on his name, he loves it, has never been teased and goes to our local state primary (he's 10). He always has the option of using his (very traditional, common) second name, but he actually much prefers his unique first name Smile.

mopsyflopsy · 01/11/2010 14:17

I know a lovely 6 year old Percy and quite like it, although -ie names seem quite trendy - Archie, Alfie, Percy...

tammytoby · 01/11/2010 17:06

Thaddeus is actually becoming quite popular in Germany these days. I quite like it.

Not keen on Cuthbert.

ooooozathon · 01/11/2010 17:17

Are people still making serious comments on this thread?

Grin

Love it

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 01/11/2010 17:22

None. Percy makes me think of Percy Thrower, Cuthbert is just awful and Corionlanus will send the poor boy into therapy the minute he hits nursery.

tammytoby · 01/11/2010 17:42

Why shouldn't people make serious comments about this thread - the poster may find these names comical and may get enjoyment about making fun of unusual names. But that doesn't mean that there are not a lot of other people in this world who have different tastes and who may be more open minded and less judgemental.

I'm not English and have lived in a few countries and nowhere are people so narrow minded and opinionated about names.

There are actually a few lovely names on this thread - I really like Percy and Thaddeus (pronounced Ta-day-us), for example Blush.

Corionlanus, on the other hand, sounds like a tongue twister and not elegant at all imo. And the -anus ending isn't great either!

pressyourthumbsintothispumpkin · 02/11/2010 11:29

I know this is a joke, but I like Percy!

evamummy · 02/11/2010 15:21

I like Percy too Smile.
