Is Robin Rose for a girl ridiculous? How about Riley or Minnie?

Anybody else thinking potentially of Robin for a girl or Riley? I like Robin Rose and Riley Rose but not 100% in love with them. I also quite like Minnie and Dotty but are those names likely to get picked on?

PS did you know Snowdrop is an actual name!

Robyn spelled with a 'Y' is much nicer for a girl in my opinion..

Riley is nice, not keen on the others though, sorry!

RockBat · 25/10/2010 10:58

Robyn is lovely, can't see any problem with Robyn Rose. Riley is a surname and sounds like a surname and Minnie is unspeakably twee. Dorothy/Dotty is nice though.

seeker · 25/10/2010 11:02

Robin is OK. Rose is lovely. Rily is a last name. Dotty is short for Dorothy and OK for a nick name but seriously mean for a given name and Minnie is common classroom slang got the female genitals.

Haliborange · 25/10/2010 11:03

Oh I love Minnie, but I think it needs to be a nickname. I did think about naming my DD2 Marianne with Minnie as a nn.

Robyn I like.
Riley is not a "real" first name as far as I am concerned.

stinkypinky · 25/10/2010 11:04

Minnie can be a contraction of Wilhelmina - not twee if a contraction IMO.

I like Robyn, but think Robin and Riley are more boy than girl.

juneybean · 25/10/2010 11:04

Depends where you are as I've never heard Minnie as slang for a foof.

My nanas a Minnie and I love it, would definitely consider it :)

brockleyD · 25/10/2010 11:18

Thank you, I thought Riley was a surname too but found it in my baby name book as girl name?? Worried Robyn sounds a bit american with Y but maybe its more feminine. This name business is not easy, is it!

I love Robin.

Riley is straying into surmanes a first territory where you'll find the 'chav' word used.

Dorothy is nice with Dotty for short.

Minnie not sufficient unless as a nickname.

ValiumSkeleton · 25/10/2010 11:23

Robin is OK, not with Rose though.

Minnie is slang for a fanny is it not?

Riley is very American. I think Elvis Presley's granddaughter is a Riley. I don't like it.

ValiumSkeleton · 25/10/2010 11:25

OP what about Greta, Dulcie, Lois or Maggie? All of those are unusual. There may be others out there but I think they are unusual enough. (I know you said on another thread that you don't know anybody else with your name and you can't imagine your child having a popular name.)

BuntyPenfold · 25/10/2010 11:38

I have a sister called Robin, she has always had a lot of 'but that's a boys name' comments.
I do think Robyn is sweet and indicates a girl!
Not keen on Riley as it's the in boys name for a certain sector here.

I agree about Minnie slang for genitals. Also called fanny. fairy, mary around here. That could be a thread on its own. :)

brockleyD · 25/10/2010 11:38

Thanks for your suggestions ValiumS, that is really sweet of you! Oh my god I had know idea that Minnie was slang for fanny!!! Funny enough my mum suggested Greta!

Looks like Robin is most liked, we will see...

Thank you everybody again.

It sounds like a name from the Wild West. Pistol Pete, Buffalo Bill, Robbin' Rose... Grin

Dorothy is good if you like Dotty or Dot.
Yasmin or Jasmine also have Minnie as a shortened form.

Riley - no. No. No. No.

mrsSmurf · 25/10/2010 12:38

My dd is minnie I love it obv. Robyn is really nice.

LetThereBeRock · 25/10/2010 13:37

I really like Robin, but Riley and Minnie are horrid.

LynetteScavo · 25/10/2010 13:38

Minnie is my favourite!

letsblowthistacostand · 25/10/2010 13:43

Robyn very much NOT american, Robin for a girl is american, unnecessary Y's always look a bit stripper to me.

Robin is really nice, what about Robin Louise or Robin Michelle?

sparkle12mar08 · 25/10/2010 13:45

Yes.

superpenguin · 25/10/2010 13:47

Robin is a boy's name.
If you spell it Robyn then is a girl's name.

BuntyPenfold · 25/10/2010 13:48

When my sister Robin went to uni she was assigned to the men's hall of residence as they thought she must be male.

I said 'I suppose they didn't look at your middle name.' (one of the above) and she said they had, but thought she was a French boy. Confused

brockleyD · 25/10/2010 14:27

um, well in my british baby name book it is spelt Robin for girls and boys, unisex name. I guess I only like Riley because it has family history and we both like unisex names...Robin is sweeter..

Elsa, Dilalah, Lola, Betsy, Ishbel (gaelic for Isabelle - I am scottish)) any better?

OP posts:
BuntyPenfold · 25/10/2010 14:46

I like all of those names brockley

I love the name Robin and I know it is meant to be unisex, it just never seemed like it in real life.
Everyone said my parents must have wanted a boy, which was true Sad, they did.

BuntyPenfold · 25/10/2010 14:47

PS Also, she was called Redbreast at school, she says, though I don't remember (much older than she was)

Faaamily · 25/10/2010 14:53

Love Robyn, Rose and Minnie. Riley sounds like a member of the Rooney family, sorry Grin.

Delilah is lovely (with an 'e') but a very loaded name when you consider the biblical connotations.

Betsy is very sweet.

I like Lola, but you'll get a lot pof 'ooh, no' comments on MN.

Elsa OK. Not keen on Ishbel.

clpsmum · 27/10/2010 02:47
