Tacky and silly don't do it.

SmellsLikeTeenSweat · 21/10/2010 19:05

The trouble with Amiras is that it sounds as if it's backwards...

How about Sarima? Smile

Original and not offensive Hmm

ColdComfortFarm · 21/10/2010 19:09

Amira is fine.

SecretNutellaFix · 21/10/2010 19:16

you also mentioned you quite like Mae. What about Maya?

Princess is certainly a name I would snigger at. I am being honest, and people can flame me, but I would snigger in private even if I said, "Erm, THat's an interesting choice. Any middle names to go with it?"

It's not really a name that can be shortened either.

no one likes my son/grandsons name but i dont care !!!if you like it thats all that matters

IggitheImpaler · 21/10/2010 20:13

"If you like it that's all that matters" - yep, so long as you don't give a fig for how it affects the dd, then nothing else matters. Hmm

Horton · 21/10/2010 21:09

Oh dear, Princess is a really awful name. It really is. I don't honestly like Lola that much either but at least it's not actively silly.

I think Princess would be bearable as a middle name but honestly truly I wouldn't give it to anyone as a real name. It's cruel.

Agree with dropping the hyphenated Mae. I actually think Mae or May would be fine as a name on its own or a middle name but not double-barrelled.

How about

Summer
Tallulah
Amber
Alexa
Scarlett
Mia
Sadie
Vivienne
Leonie
Melissa

?

They're not names I'd choose but they are pretty girly names which aren't completely ridiculous.

facebook · 21/10/2010 21:13

Oh NOOO please don't do it. Fine for a poncy dog, not for a child. Sienna is not too bad though still not to my taste but certainly a far better choice than Princess. Think about the poor girl growing up to be a 30 year old writing a CV with her name on. Would u employ a Princess??? (without laughing at her unfortunite name??)

greenlotus · 21/10/2010 21:16

In some cultures this would be a usual name (I knew an adult "Princess" in London and she was every bit as lovely as her name) but you probably wouldn't be agonising if that was the case for you.

Blu · 21/10/2010 21:20

Imagine Kate Middleton's Dad had fancied calling her Princess. Her fairytale dream would have fallen at the first hurdle as Royal Advisors sniggered while advising Wills that 'Princess Princess and Prince W' was just silly.

Do not curtail your children's chances in life with an ill-thought out name!

arfasleep · 21/10/2010 21:21

Yes, Princess def not unusual for black girls name, as is Prince for man but otherwise would def say no, no, sorry v tacky. Would be better as middle name if you want to use it at all. Names meaning Princess prob a good idea

kat2504 · 21/10/2010 22:27

Princess lacks aspiration really. Why not call her Queen instead? Much higher up the pecking order ;) However, you are not in the royal family so perhaps a rethink is needed?

Sorry, no matter how much you, or your husband, like the name, I think it is a bad idea. I'd go with the compromise option - pick another name you both like and use Princess as a family nickname. It might be a real name in some cultures, but if you aren't in that group of society, it isn't a great idea. I don't even think it's all that great for a baby, but for a grown woman it could be embarrassing. Other people's views aren't important, but what your child might think should matter to you. perhaps ask a sample of 30 year old women how they would feel about having that as their legal name?
The names meaning princess is a good idea too, Amira is pretty and feminine sounding but also a good name for a grown up as well as a child.

puffling · 21/10/2010 23:41

Princess Anne is called Princess and she's not common.

Snorbs · 21/10/2010 23:46

I know someone who used to work around Princess Anne and he reckons her prolific and enthusiastic use of obscene language made her sound as common as muck.

mathanxiety · 21/10/2010 23:53

The one little (12 yo) 'Princess' I know is affectionately known as Cesspit to her closest friends.

Lola is not bad, and Amira is really lovely, imo.

clpsmum · 22/10/2010 09:24

Could princess not be a middlename?

brittan76 · 22/10/2010 09:53

It's not great and it's totally looks like you are copying Jordan!

How about Dolly?

Silkstalkings · 22/10/2010 16:54

LOL, Barbie?

annabell28 · 23/10/2010 17:06

Amira is an inspired choice; unusual and feminine and pretty. Have to agree with most posters, Princess is a very bad choice.

SkylineDrifter · 23/10/2010 17:32

Amira is lovely. Princess not a good idea, Sienna I'm a bit 'meh' about, and Lola-Mae, sorry but I don't like that much at all.

sungirltan · 23/10/2010 17:35

princess - its not cute, its chav.

mrsSmurf · 23/10/2010 22:45

Cant believe that your the same person who posted on my thread about the name sonny and said think about when he is an adult....princess Biscuit.

pastaplease · 23/10/2010 22:49

Princess! Delusions of grandeur!

Please don't do it.

Sienna is fairly common where I live (and chav, I'm afraid).

Lola makes me think "Her name was Lola, she was a show girl" - not good.

Sorry!
