Miles

I like a classic but not overused name. I like Miles, but am worried it is too trendy (especially in the US, and I am American so can't rule out that he may one day want to live there).

Honest opinions, please. Don't be bashful. I want to know now if it's a bad choice -- before it's too late.

Other names I like (but all have been vetoed by DH, and I have vetoed quite a few of his as well):

Luke
Stuart (although has been accepted as a middle name)
Nicholas

Couldn't you call him Michael and use Miles as NN from day one?

Strix · 20/10/2010 14:23

Michael is on my vetoe list on account of being too common... Same applies to James, George, etc. Nice names but too many people already have them.

veto, obviously. Blush

miles is the plural of mile - I just don't see it as a name.

How about
Felix
Quentin
Tobias

Bue · 20/10/2010 15:23

I have always liked Miles. (Might be because I'm a fellow North American!) Also like the spelling Myles. I think it is trendier and more common in the US, but not wildly so.

BuntyPenfold · 20/10/2010 16:08

I like Miles and don't know any.
There are a lot of Lukes in their teens at the moment in the UK
Nicholas is a bit too open for teasing in my honest opinion. I have seen a 'Knickerless" reduced to tears many times.

bundlebelly · 20/10/2010 16:14

My dh liked Miles for ours, but I can't help thinking Miles sounds overpriviledged and ungrateful. Mind you, I don't like any of the Hugo, Felix, Quentin, Benedict kind of poshboy names. (sorry but you asked for honesty, actually this is the first time I have said I don't like a name, normally I think better to say nothing than to say something nasty. But I'm bored, so here is my opinion!
If you love the name, don't listen to me or anyone else! Your baby, and he will have the name he is meant to have, whatever you decide! Good luck!

Strix · 20/10/2010 16:19

No worries, I asked for honesty and I do appreciate it. Oh, yes, I also liked Felix and it too was vetoed by DH.

love it - dd would have been Miles had she been a boy Smile

ShowOfBloodyStumps · 20/10/2010 16:26

Lovely. Name like that, a child is bound to go far.

Amberc · 20/10/2010 16:54

Miles is a gorgeous name. I always imagine adults called Miles to be very handsome and dashing!

minipie · 20/10/2010 16:57

I like Miles. It doesn't work so well when they're very little, but Milo is a cute nn for a small boy.

MardyBra · 20/10/2010 16:57

I'm with poppydaisy, I see it as a measurement. How about kilometres?

3isthemagicnumber · 20/10/2010 16:57

Lovely name and not at sll over used here
(except in my houseWink)

NoahAndTheWhale · 20/10/2010 16:58

My godparents' son is called Miles. She is a classicist and Miles is the Latin for soldier.

I like it. I think my mum thought (and probably does think) it is a bit pretentious, but I wouldn't bat an eyelid at it.

MardyBra · 20/10/2010 16:59

But presumably in Latin it would be pronounced "Mee - Les" which would be pretentious.

NoahAndTheWhale · 20/10/2010 17:03

I think my godmother has been known to pronounce it like that occasionally Grin.

FimboBBINGFORAPPLES · 20/10/2010 17:10

I like it, but prefer the Myles spelling as other posters have said.

IWillNotNeverEatATomato · 20/10/2010 17:33

What about Giles, could this be a more unusual alternative for you if you are worried about the popularity of Miles

after all it does sound like Miles

another alternative you may or may not have discussed -
Gregory - Greg for short and would go well with Stuart for a middle name

tammytoby · 20/10/2010 18:34

Miles, Metres, Kilometres are all measurements and not names in my mind.

Sorry, you did ask for honesty.

rachel234 · 20/10/2010 18:56

Not keen on Miles, I'm afraid. It does sound like a measurement. I also can't see any nice nicknames - Mile?

fairybubbles · 20/10/2010 19:20

It's a name I really like at the moment but I prefer it spelt Myles.

Strix · 20/10/2010 19:58

No offense taken to the distance measurement comments. I really do want your honest opinions -- the more the merrier.

I believe the origin of Miles is somewhat disputed. One claim to the name is the Latin meaning soldier. Another is Old German, and I can't remember the meaning.

I agree that Gregory Stuart sounds nice. But, as our last name ends in the "ee" sound I don't like first names that end in the "ee" sound. Zachary was knocked off my list for that same reason.

Oh, and I don't really care for Myles... even if it is very American to change the "i"s to "y"s.

RockBat · 20/10/2010 20:22

Miles is lovely, Myles is stupid.

lowra · 20/10/2010 20:48

Really like Miles, on my short list for a boy.
