Boys first names to go with middle name Dixie?

expectingno3 · 18/10/2010 11:12

I've posted before re DH and I being poles apart on boy's names. He likes good old biblical names, nothing flouncy, and I like well, more modern, flouncy names!
DH is a passionate Evertonian, and after much googling, I found the name Dixie. Dixie Dean was Evertons most capped player in the 20's. Richard was also the name of my late brother, so all quite appropriate there. So any ideas for first names?
I don't even know what I'm having, but we don't have such a problem with the girls names.

I just think Dixie Chicks. Sorry.

Skyrg · 18/10/2010 11:19

I thought Dixie was more common as a girl's name now? Maybe that's just me. Could you not just use Richard? Anyway.

Biblical but also flouncy? Um.
Noah
Malachi
Simeon
Tobias
Josiah
Asher
Joachim
Reuben
Matthias
Moses Grin

Am I remotely close to what you're looking for?

expectingno3 · 18/10/2010 11:21

Oh no! my first response and its a no-goer! Does this indicate how this thread is going to go?? Thanks anyway.

I know a girl called Dixie, and a female horse. Never heard of it for a boy.
There is an unfortunate song - 'I wish I was in Dixie' etc which would deter me from using it to be honest.

TotorosOcarina · 18/10/2010 11:24

SHE DIDN'T ASK FOR OPINIONS ON DIXIE!

BuntyPenfold · 18/10/2010 11:28

okay calm down toto

OP, Richard is a nice name too - did you call your late brother Dixie?

expectingno3 · 18/10/2010 11:30

Sorry, crossed posts there. Yes I just put Dixie into mumsnet name finder and it came up as a girls name. Not going well so far!
Thankyou for your suggestions Skyrg. Doesn't have to be Biblical, but can't be flouncy. I'm afraid I think they would be too fancy for his liking. I love Reuben, but sods law our sirname begins with R! He really is into Peter, Matthew, Anthony - that kind of thing. Only one we can agree on at the mo is Benjamin.

Skyrg · 18/10/2010 11:31

TotorosOcarina I think people expect comments. Plus no one has said 'oh please God no' etc, everyone who's commented has made a specific constructive observation about the name. It could be something the OP hadn't thought of.

OP, as it's a middle name I wouldn't worry too much. I wouldn't use it personally, but if you like it and it has lots of meaning to you, I don't see the problem. As I said, I associate it with girls, but then I know it can also be a boy's name.
There is teasing potential, but as long as the child is aware of the background of the name they should be able to tell people and most teasers would shut up. Plus many many people have embarrassing middle names! :)

I would personally use Richard as the middle name, rather than Dixie, but then it's up to you ofc.

Can you give us a more specific idea of what you're looking for in a first name? Were any of mine any good? And what does your surname begin with?

expectingno3 · 18/10/2010 11:34

I'm not very good at this am I? I get so stresed choosing names, I do tend to ask what everyone thinks, (often a bad idea), so feel free to comment on Dixie if you wish. And no, we never called my brother Dixie - in fact he would have probably thought it a rdiculous name!

OP posts:
Skyrg · 18/10/2010 11:34

Could you compromise with an unusual name that has a more common nickname?

My partner and I are exactly the same btw. No children, but we've discussed names. I like unusual names and Biblical names, he likes very common names. I like Malachai, he likes Mark.

Threelittleducks · 18/10/2010 11:36

We had a dog called Dixie. She was a girl.We got ripped for that. Even more so when my nan (who bought the dog) insisted that next dog was called after her mother - Muffin.

Dix and Muff. Try shouting that down the park.

Dixie.....hmmm...never heard it used for a boy (not into footy). I do love the name, but not sure what it would go with. Would have to be a cool manly first name.

Don't use Roger.
Or Toby.
Or Norman (Dixie Normous?)

Jacob?
Eammon?

Threelittleducks · 18/10/2010 11:37

Love Benjamin

savoycabbage · 18/10/2010 11:38

I think it's cracking and it wouldn't cross my mind that it was a girls name, not that you are asking that! I don't really get all the 'they might be teased' business. There are so many names from so many cultures.

My dd has a Harry, Andre, Nidi, Jaques, Madison, Natasha, Vivian, Skye, Steven and a Bianka with a 'k' in her class and I am quite sure she doesn't know which are unusual and which aren't as she has been exposed to all of them equally.

expectingno3 · 18/10/2010 11:40

Ok, here's my list:
Dexter
Quinn
Mac
Lucas
Elliot

DH hates all of these. His choice would be
Peter
Anthony (pronounced An-thon-y) I don't know why...
Francis

Our sirname begins with R, I loved Reuben though SKYRG!
Saints names might be the way to go.

A uncommon name with a common nickname?
Tobias - Toby
Matthias - Matt
Jonah - Joe/Jon

Or a common names with an uncommon nickname?
Alexander - Xander, Xan
Christopher - Kit, Topher
Michael - Cale

These aren't very good, but you get the idea.. would something like that satisfy both of you, or please no one?

expectingno3 · 18/10/2010 11:48

Threelittleducks. lol at Norman! - Dixie Normous! Will avoid that one then... Jacob is quite nice though.

OP posts:
savoycabbage · 18/10/2010 11:48

I like Peter the best out of those. You can't have Dexter Dixie but I don't think there is a problem with R.R initials.

I am liking Skyrg's Christopher/Kit idea though.

expectingno3 · 18/10/2010 11:54

I'm getting more confused than ever now but Skyrg - You may have a good angle there. I like Kit and Jonah. I'll ask DH tonight.

What about Jude? I love it and might be able to purseuade DH, but does it sound quite feminine?

OP posts:
expectingno3 · 18/10/2010 12:00

I'm afrid Peter is out as its FIL's name, and it just wouldn't be fair. Again, he'd have Paul, but thats my dad's name!

No, I wouldn't have Dexter Dixie. The only reason for Dixie was, if I had to give in to a plainer first name, Dixie might liven it up a bit.(?)

OP posts:
BuntyPenfold · 18/10/2010 12:02

I like the name Jude and only know one. He is not called Judy, but he has been about 6' 5" and weighed about 17 stone since he was 12.Wink

Skyrg · 18/10/2010 12:02

Jude is nice, although it sounds wrong with Dixie for me... Not sure why. Turns into 'Judixie'.
But the name itself is nice as a first name. It is used for girls but is still primarily a boys name afaik.

Ask your DH and report back! I am interested now Grin

savoycabbage · 18/10/2010 12:07

Me too! Grin I want your dh's name list as I am one for Dixie, so now we need his names.

expectingno3 · 18/10/2010 12:13

No, I wouldn't go for Jude Dixie. Only would use Dixie if the first name was plain. I think Jude is really cool, but still anxious about the girly sound to it. please note I don't want to offend anyone with a Jude out there.

OP posts:
expectingno3 · 18/10/2010 12:14

ok, I'll email him. he will be none too pleased to be asked at work I'm sure, but hey, its nearly lunchtime.

OP posts:
savoycabbage · 18/10/2010 12:18

Tell him to hurry, I have to go to bed soon. I live in Australia! I insist that he names his unborn child at once, so I can get some kip. Grin
