Can you spell Margot as Margo

I think probably not but I've done a search on the name here and hadn't thought of the maggot connection! Anyone know how likely it is a child will get teased for this? Does Margo just look a bit rubbish though?

And opinions welcome on the name itself of course :) .

I think it looks silly, sorry.

Not overly fond of the name tbh. It just reminds me of The Good Life.

JaynieB · 15/10/2010 22:20

I think its fine. I knew a girl at Uni called Margo (short for Margaret)

FranknCock · 15/10/2010 22:21

I know an adult Margo who spells it that way.

lifeinagoldfishbowl · 15/10/2010 22:21

Margo looks a bit odd.

Love the name - have a friend called Margot and when I was younger I loved the name after reading it in a book.

pushmepullyou · 15/10/2010 22:23

My godmother is called Margo.

pancakeisuptheduff · 15/10/2010 22:28

Margo without the t is the more common spelling in the U.S. I think.

Rhubarbgarden · 15/10/2010 22:33

I think it's a lovely name, but you have to keep the T; it looks like a nickname without it. The T gives it elegance.

jkklpu · 15/10/2010 23:15

try Margaux - a perfectly valid way of spelling it

Linnet · 15/10/2010 23:17

My friend is Margo with no T.

ValiumSkeleton · 16/10/2010 10:42

Margo is used in Spain. I knew one.

Margot looks more normal imo.

Margeaux or Margaux just look ridiculous.

RockBat · 16/10/2010 10:45

You have to have the t. It does give it a more elegant look. Margo looks daft and a short step away from Margi. And Margaux looks like gateaux.

mopsyflopsy · 16/10/2010 14:07

Margot will often be pronounced Mar-gott (e.g. in Germany and Scandinavia it is pronounced that way)

Margo will ALWAYS be pronouced Mar-go.

LynetteScavo · 16/10/2010 14:23

I much prefer Margo.

pancakeisuptheduff · 16/10/2010 15:12

Margaux is a wine! You might as well go all the way and call her Chardonnay!

rachel234 · 16/10/2010 15:40

I know a Margot (Dutch) and her name is pronounced Mar-gott.

I know that in French you don't pronounce the 't' but in English you would, wouldn't you? You say Elliot, not Ellio.

I agree with previous poster - if you spell it Margo, then the pronounciation will be clear to everyone.

spidookly · 16/10/2010 15:42

I prefer Margo too.

Margot can be pronounced more than one way, and most of them sound the t.

CaptainNancy · 16/10/2010 15:45

You can spell it that way... but I prefer Margot (and I love it)

poppydaisy · 16/10/2010 16:29

I think most languages (other than French) will sound the 't'.

I would go with Margo if you want it pronounced that way.

moragsoverhereplease · 16/10/2010 17:23

I love the name Margo it is on my list as a nn for Margarite.

CharlieBoo · 16/10/2010 18:18

I'm sorry either way you spell it, it's positively awful. So many beautiful names, it's very harsh sounding. Sorry

allyfe · 16/10/2010 19:45

I love Margot, but that is because the film "La Reine Margot". Before that, it was Margo from The Good Life - much more negative association!

SpecterBooAlot · 16/10/2010 20:16

Margot is a lovely name. Margo looks stupid.

Ragwort · 16/10/2010 20:18

Of course you can spell it Margo.

allbie · 17/10/2010 21:05

I love the name Margot and it was no1 on our list but we had a boy! I prefer it with a 't' though.

Needaname · 17/10/2010 21:16

Thanks everyone. I think we will go with Margot if we use it. We do have Polish and German connections so some reminders to knock the t off the end will be needed :).

I liked Margot in The Good Life luckily!
