I know I've done this before but I'm due today and not sure I feel any clearer about which name to use.....

Maisie or Madeleine.

We would shorten Madeleine to Maddy and Maisie could use Mai or Maia when older if needed/wanted a more grown up name.

What do you think? Be nice!

Madeleine is lovely, classic, classy, has a nice nn.
Don't like Maisie at all I'm afraid, perhaps because of all the dogs round here called (crazy) Maisie.

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 14/10/2010 12:48

Madeleine....!

Maisie just sounds a bit wishy washy...! :)

Skyrg · 14/10/2010 12:55

Madeleine without any doubt.
Maisie is more of a babyish name, what with the 'ie' on the end. I don't think it suits an adult. Using Mai or Maia is using a nickname as a 'serious' name, which doesn't work IMO.

Also agree with BuntyPenfold, Maisie reminds me of a dog. Or a mouse.

KenDoddsDadsZombieDogsNotDead · 14/10/2010 12:56

Madeleine!

expectingno3 · 14/10/2010 13:16

Madeleine. Maddy is cute when they're little, and Madeleine is a beautiful name for an older child / adult.

I think maisie is very pretty.

mopsyflopsy · 14/10/2010 13:34

If I had to choose, then Madeleine (although I'm not keen on the 'mad' in Maddie)

Maisy is too comical imo (maisy mouse etc).

CharlieBoo · 14/10/2010 13:36

Madeleine is a bit old woman for me and Maddy is a bit trendy and American for me and will date terribly.

Not over keen on Maisie either sorry.

LetThereBeRock · 14/10/2010 13:59

I love Madeleine.

thisisyesterday · 14/10/2010 14:00

Maisie

Madeleine is so over-done these days

weepootle · 14/10/2010 14:02

Madeleine, though not too keen on Maddy.

MamaVoo · 14/10/2010 14:15

Madeleine, but only if you don't shorten it. Maisie is so whimsical. Maia is nice though.

rachel234 · 14/10/2010 14:36

Madeleine is quite common and I don't like Maddie (I think the 'mad' bit bothers me).

Maisy is cute for a mouse, dog or a cartoon character but I wouldn't want to be called this as a grown woman.

So, if I had to choose, Madeleine. How about Maya or Maria?

chickentwizzler · 14/10/2010 15:25

Maisie

Ragwort · 14/10/2010 15:27

I love Madeleine - that was my name if DS had been a DD !

Also like Maisie.

Both lovely choices Smile

metromum · 14/10/2010 21:04

I like Madeleine best.

I prefer Maisie.

NoTeaForMe · 14/10/2010 23:13

Thanks all for your replies! My husband is pretty set on Maisie it seems, we talked about the fact that it's not really a very professsional name, and someone on here suggested Mai / Maia. We'd still have Maisie on the birth certificate though. And he thinks Maisie suits someone of any age, we both love Maisie!

I also love Madeleine, and nn Maddy. My only concern is that I work in a school and there are 4 Madeleine / Maddy's in year 1. I work in a private school though and my daughter will be going to the local school (not private!) but it does concern me that it's so popular! But maybe it's more popular in the private sector? I don't know?!?!?! While my husband loves this name too he is definitely more set on Maisie!

Any other opinions?

Maisie has always sounded like a nickname to me, although a nice nickname. According to my baby name dictionary, it's a nickname for Mairead, a Scottish variant of Margaret. That would be two other full name options if you wanted Maisie to be a nickname. You could probably think of other M-names that you could use with Maisie as a nickname.

I have always loved the name Madeleine but current popularity would put me off.

savoycabbage · 15/10/2010 11:32

I once taught a class with four Madeleines too! That is so strange. They were six and it was in 2001 so not the same ones.

There are lots and lots of Maisies now though I would say. I know heaps of them.

tammytoby · 15/10/2010 12:07

How about Margaret? You'd have lots of lovely nickname options then.

chickentwizzler · 15/10/2010 12:18

Maisie is fine as a grown up name, I really don't see the problem. I know a Maisie who is a solicitor.

It is way better than say Poppy or Daisy, which to me are names for a child.

Yes, it is popular, but not top five popular. I have a popular name, and it's not an issue.

Go for it!
