...that I know and have been born recently are called

Imogen
Grace
Elodie
Evie
Amelia
Daisy

And permutations including the above for their middle names. i.e. Imogen Grace and Daisy Amelia... How did these names suddenly get so popular? And would you use them?

BuntyPenfold · 14/10/2010 11:26

I would use Daisy, not the others.
I never get the popularity of Grace, so like Grease to my ears. And Greasy is worse!

mopsyflopsy · 14/10/2010 11:58

Names, like fashion, fall in and out of fashion. They become very popular only to fall out of favour a few years later. People with such names are therefore 'dated' to the era they were popular (think Sharon, Tracy etc).

Personally I would avoid very popular names because 1) I hated being one of 3 in my class and 2) I prefer classic more timeless names. (Just like I prefere mor timeless classic clothes Smile).

CharlieBoo · 14/10/2010 13:23

Yes, but classic timeless names are in the top 20, think Sophie, Emily, Lucy.

Its hard to balance out the popular from the over popular, and you never have any idea about which names will be popular in your area at the time of your dc's birth. This site gives the name Jack a complete slating but there are none in my ds' class at school and only 2 in the whole school, however the name Noah which is much less popular, there are 2 in one class in reception and one in year one and another in year 2.

rachel234 · 14/10/2010 14:42

Yes, CharlieBoo, you can indeed not know which names will become super popular after your child is born. You can only minimise the risk by choosing a name outside the top 100 (but even then, there is no guarantee, of course).

ragged · 14/10/2010 14:45

Grace is ok, others not my taste at all.
I like the 1960s-1970s names like Jackie, Nicola, Jane and Sarah!

4andnotout · 14/10/2010 14:46

When I named dd1 Olivia-Mae in 2001 it didn't seem to be particularly popular but then within months i heard of loads of Olivia's. May must be very popular at the moment as bil has just named their baby xxx May Hmm

KnitterNotTwitter · 14/10/2010 15:29

ragged you've just listed both my first and middle names - and I am a child of the 70's :)

Oldjolyon · 14/10/2010 16:06

With the exception of Evie, I don't know any children under 5 with those names. I do know 4 little Evies mind :)

Babies I know round here have names like Harriet, Martha, Isobel and so on...

going · 14/10/2010 16:09

Most of them will have the middle name Mae/May or Rose!

ValiumSkeleton · 14/10/2010 16:24

Never met an Elodie, and actually I think those names were more 'of the moment' nearly a decade ago....

The last two girl babies born in my extended circle of acquaintance friends/family were Zoe and Catherine.

Caro1302 · 14/10/2010 21:00

I love all those names, along with Isabelle which is the only one missing from your list for my NCT group Smile

My own DD is Lydia which is not so common but the MW who delivered her had a 13 year old Lydia funnily enough.

Names seem to get popular out of nowhere. I remember when Isabelle and Grace were unusual, old-fashioned names, but word spreads and names become over-used. Actually it wouldn't put me off using any of those names because they're all pretty.

Silkstalkings · 15/10/2010 21:14

I'm an Olivia, named after the mother in the Waltons! Is nice now that everyone can pronounce it and spell it at last but I'm not a fan of popular names. I liked being pretty much unique growing up, made me memorable without me having to trySmile.

LiquoriceLila · 15/10/2010 21:33

Yep id agree those names are all v popular (with exception of Elodie- dont know any). Also Ella seems v popular, i know loads

MrsC2010 · 15/10/2010 22:04

Ameila is DD's middle name, bizarrely we hadn't heard it used before so thought it wasn't that common! We certainly don't know anyone by that name. Oh well.

In my post natal group there are 2 Eve/Evie's and an Ava. Only 10 of us there!

Ineedsomesleep · 16/10/2010 13:13

Haven't met any Elodie's yet. The most recent ones I've met are Evelyn, Claudia, Lucia and Evie.

PutTheKettleOn · 16/10/2010 13:24

DD2 was very nearly an Imogen... so glad now we didn't use it, though still think it's a lovely name, as since she's been born I have met loads of them!

My strategy has always been to find a name that you love, is well-known enough for people not to go 'ehh?' when they hear it, but not so popular that you will meet loads of them, so ideally not in the top 100. Managed it with both the DDs - DD1 was easy, DD2 took a LOT of searching but we got there in the end Smile

newpup · 16/10/2010 13:54

The last 3 babies born that I have known are all Lily. Very popular here.

Evie
Grace
Imogen
Daisy
Molly
Isabelle/Isobel
Ella
Olivia
Scarlett
These names are so popular around here. At Dds school, the reception class, Years 1,2 &3 are awash with these names.

The unusual names are Catherine, Rebecca, Lucy etc. All the names that were popular when I was at school!

Fashions come and go. I love all the old fashioned 'granny' names though.

fedupofnamechanging · 16/10/2010 14:42

Dd is 3 and called Evangeline. When she was born I didn't know of any Evies. It's only by reading MN that I gather Evie is popular at the moment.

CharlieBoo · 16/10/2010 18:07

Everyone on here says Evie's are 10 a penny but I don't know one round here.

Like I said you could pick a less popular name and there still be another in her class. Pick a name you LOVE.

mathanxiety · 16/10/2010 20:07

The only one I'd pick would be Evie but as a nn for something longer.

CrazyPlateLady · 16/10/2010 20:11

I don't actually know any girls with those names from the OPs list. Amelia has been our chosen girls name for about 8 years and I love it, therefore I am still going to use it in 17 weeks time. Our DS's name is popular too but it was the only boys name we could agree on so we didn't care.

littlemisslozza · 16/10/2010 20:15

All except Elodie popular round here, however the last three baby girls born to my friends within 2 months have been called Jessica!

electra · 16/10/2010 20:17

None of those names were on my list but I have an Isabella which seems to be getting quite popular.

lowrib · 17/10/2010 00:47

Is Elodie getting popular? Really? !

It's been a favourite name of mine since I lived with a French woman called Elodie some years back. I won't be able to use it - I had a DS (and I don't think DP would go for if we have a DD one day anyway) and so I've suggested it to everyone who would listen! - Particularly on MN.

lowrib · 17/10/2010 00:48

You forgot to mention the other two 'default' middle names. If it's not Grace it'll be Rose or May.
